1 An engine weighing 1785.4 N is to be supported on four helical springs. When the 10 4 4
engine speed is 900rpm there is a primary vertical disturbing force of maximum
value 312 N due to the unbalanced reciprocating weights. Assuming that the engine
vibrates in the vertical direction with neither horizontal nor angular movement, find
the stiffness of each spring in N/m of deflection to limit the maximum total periodic
force on the foundations to 21.3 N. What will be the amplitude of vibration of the
engine when its speed is 600rpm?
2 a) The damped vibration record of a spring mass dashpot system shows the following 06 4 4
data: Amplitude on second cycle = 1.2 cm; amplitude on the 3rd cycle = 1.05 cm;
spring constant = 8kg/cm, weight on the spring = 2 kg. Determine the damping
constant, assuming viscus damping.
b) How is vibration a factor for human discomfort? 04 4 2
3 a) Owing to the wide separation of the natural frequency of the sprung parts from that of the un- 10 4 4
sprung parts, the bounce and pitch motions of the vehicle body and the wheel motions exist
almost independently. The sprung parts of a vehicle weigh 12 kN, its center of gravity is 110
cm behind the front axle, and the wheelbase is 240 cm. The combined stiffness of the springs
of the front suspension is 34.52 kN/m and that of the rear suspension is 36.27 kN/m. The
radius of gyration of the sprung parts about a horizontal transverse axis through the center of
gravity is 105.7 cm. Calculate the natural frequencies of the pitch and bounce motions of the
vehicle body. Also determine the locations of the oscillation centers. Draw the corresponding
diagrams.
4 a) Discuss yaw velocity gain and its characteristics of understeer, neutral steer, and oversteer 05 3 2
with a neat sketch.
b) Discuss the testing of handling characteristics using Constant Radius Test with a neat 05 3 2
sketch.
5 a) Analyze the vehicle stability control operating principles with sketch. 05 3 4
b) Discuss the handling behavior of a vehicle with yaw rate control to that with both yaw rate and 05 3 2
sideslip angle control with neat sketch.
