Aim
To support pupils to be able to dress independently and organise their own belongings in preparation
for going to school.

Sequence of Learning

Introduction
Explain to pupils that they are going to learn about how to independently get ready for school in
the morning by following a timetable and checklist. Use the Getting Ready for School PowerPoint
Presentation to clearly introduce the lesson aim.

Teaching Input
Ask the pupils to share with a partner the different kind of activities they need to do in the morning
to get ready for school. Then, take feedback from the pupils. Discuss the importance of carrying
out certain activities in the morning, such as getting dressed, eating breakfast, cleaning teeth and
collecting school belongings. Show the visual cues on the Getting Ready for School PowerPoint
Presentation.
Go through the visual timetable on the Getting Ready for School PowerPoint Presentation and ask
the pupils to put it in the correct order so that it is relevant to themselves and their usual routine. The
order may differ from pupil to pupil and it is worth discussing and clarifying any misconceptions. Using
their own copy of the Getting Ready for School Visual Timetable, pupils should work independently to
arrange their own timetable for the day in the correct sequence.
Focus on the ‘getting dressed’ part of the routine. Use real-life objects to discuss the sequence of
putting on a uniform and how to check a uniform by using a mirror or asking an adult.
Go through the Getting Ready for School Checklist and show pupils how to use the checklist to ensure

they have completed all the activities. Ask key questions, such as ‘What is the first thing you need to
do in the morning?’, ‘What is the next thing you need to do?’ and ‘What is the final thing you need to do
before going to school?’.

Follow-Up Activity
In order to reinforce the learning in this lesson, provide follow-up activities to complete at home
through the use of the Getting Dressed for School Game and support pupils to become independent
using the Getting Ready for School Visual Timetable and the Getting Ready for School Checklist.
