Focus area(s): Personal development – Physical Education and Health
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand Canada’s food guide by
Objective of lesson: engaging in an activity during which they will categorize different types of food into three
sections: vegetables and fruits, protein foods, and whole grain foods.
Physical and Motor Development (Motor skills)
-Students will develop their fine motor skills by cutting out the pictures of food on the
flyers they brought and gluing them on the food guide circle.
-Students will continuously be reminded to sit properly when they are sitting criss-cross on
the floor during the whole group discussion as well as when they are sitting on the chairs
during the group activity.

Physical and Motor Development (Healthy lifestyle habits)


-Students will name different foods on the flyer and identify the category that each food
belongs to.
-Students will be careful when handling scissors during the group activity.

Emotional Development (Self-knowledge)


-Students will ask for a teacher’s help whenever necessary and clearly mention what they
need help for.
-Students will be able to recognize their own emotion and to express it in an appropriate
way. They will also recognize signs of an emotion in others and properly react to them.

-Students will follow class rules like raising their hands and listening to the teacher. They
will pay attention to instruction and engage in a group activity.

-Students will wait for their turn to express their feelings and ideas and ask questions.
-Students will learn words related to nutrition: protein, whole grain, vegetables, and fruits.
-Students who are left-handed will use scissors designed for left-handers.
-Students who don’t know how to read and/or use scissors properly will get an extra help
from teachers.
-Students whose mother tongue is Portuguese will be sitting together so that they can work

-Visual and auditory learners will benefit by watching the video about balanced diet.
Visual learners will also learn better as they are cutting out not just the names, but the
pictures of the foods on the flyers.

Review Nutrition (5 minutes)
-“Does anyone remember what we learned yesterday about nutrition? Show me your

Introduce Canada’s Food Guide (10 minutes)
-“What do you think we should eat to stay healthy?”
-“Put on your detective glasses and guess what Ms. Karen has had for dinner yesterday.”
Let students share their ideas. “Ms. Karen had pizza yesterday. Do you think it was
healthy? Why or why not?” “What could Ms. Karen have eaten if she wanted to eat
healthy? A chocolate cake?” “We know that carrots are food for your health. But is it
healthy to eat carrots only everyday? Fruits?” “It’s important to have a balanced diet.”
-Show a video about balanced diet. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VtxCxtsMAI)
-Show the picture of Canada’s Food Guide. “To help our balanced diet, Canada has a
food guide which looks like this.” Introduce each category and ask students what they can
see in each category.

Introduce the Group Activity (5 minutes)


-Tell students that they will cut out the foods from grocery flyers and paste them on the
Unfolding of the lesson following category of the Canada’s food guide circle.
-Give students hints like “Since it’s easier to see if it’s a fruit or vegetable, you might want
to put all the fruits and vegetables first and then move on to the next category” and
“There are food that don’t belong to any of the groups.”
-Make sure that students don’t touch the materials before they are told to start.
-Talk about precautions when using scissors.
-Tell students they have 15 minutes.
-Tell students to divide their roles among the group.

Group Activity (20 minutes)


-Circulate the classroom during the activity.
-Set a timer of 15 minutes and keep reminding students of the time left.
-When the timer rings, students will start to clean up. The teacher will put a 5-minute clean-
up song while students are picking up the trash and putting scissors and glues in their

Presentation (10 minutes)
-Each group will be invited to the front and present what they have put in each category
of the circle. After each presentation, the teacher will let other students ask questions or
give comments.
Conclusion
Wrap-up (2 minutes)
-Ask students what they thought or felt about the activity. Review the three categories of
Canada’s food guide and examples of each category.
-The teacher will assess students’ general understanding on nutrition by asking questions
during the whole group discussion. The teacher will also observe students during the group
activity. The teacher will also encourage students to feel free to ask any questions they

-At the end of the lesson, the teacher will collect students’ food guide circle and check each
group’s work in order to assess their understanding.

-Students will use what they have learned about nutrition when working on the group activity. They will employ their knowledge
about vegetables, fruits, protein foods, and whole grain foods to differentiate different foods on the flyer.
-Students will find effective work methods for the group activity. For example, when categorizing the food, students may first check if
the food is vegetable or fruit. If not, they can try two other options one by one and see if the food works in each category.
-Students will interact with others by listening to them and being open to differences. They will contribute to team efforts.
-Students will learn to communicate with others using appropriate words and expressions.
