Mathematics, Science, and Technology – Mathematics Focus area(s): To reason using mathematical concepts and processes To communicate by using mathematical language By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand the concept of measurement Objective of lesson: and develop measuring skills by calculating the length of dinosaur miniatures using linking cubes and paper clips. Physical and Motor Development (Motor skills) -Students will continuously be reminded to sit properly when they are sitting criss-cross on the floor during the whole group discussion as well as when they are sitting on the chairs during the group activity. -Students will develop fine motor skills by handling linking cubes and paper clips
Emotional Development (Self-knowledge)
-Students will ask for a teacher’s help whenever necessary and clearly mention what they need help for. -Students will be able to recognize their own emotion and to express it in an appropriate way. They will also recognize signs of an emotion in others and properly react to them.
Emotional Development (Self-confidence)
-Students will set goals for the group activity and take risks and try new ways in order to achieve their goals. -They will proudly show their skills to measure the objects to the teachers. QEP Competencies (developmental domains) Social Development (Sense of belonging) -Students will be listening and showing respect to their classmates throughout the lesson. -Students will participate in a group activity by interacting with their group members using appropriate expressions. They will also contribute by suggesting ideas as well as helping and encouraging others. Moreover, they will share materials with their group members.
Social Development (Social skills)
-Students will show respect to others’ emotions and ideas. They will be polite and approach another person gently. -Students will follow class rules like raising their hands and listening to the teacher. They will pay attention to instruction and engage in a group activity.
Language Development (Oral language)
-Students will wait for their turn to express their feelings and ideas and ask questions. -Students will learn words related to measurement: measure, units of measurement, long, linking cubes, longest, shortest. -Students whose mother tongue is Portuguese will be sitting together so that they can work in a more comfortable environment. Differentiation/ EDI considerations -Students who need extra help will get an appropriate support by a childcare worker or other teachers. -Auditory and visual learners will benefit by watching a YouTube video. Dinosaur miniatures, linking cubes, paper clips, beads, magic hand, measuring dinosaur Materials & Resources worksheet. Learning Plan If The Shoe Fits (10 minutes) -Play If The Shoe Fits read-aloud. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U1_8PNL50c) -Ask “Albert and Wanda didn’t know if the shoe would fit in their playroom. So what did they decide to do? They decided to measure the size of the shoe.” “What does “measure” Introduction mean? It means to calculate or find out the size of something.” -“But they didn’t have a ruler to measure the length of the shoe. So what did you decide to use? They used their feet, cheese sticks, and paper clips. In this case, their feet, cheese sticks, and paper clips are called units of measurement. Unit is something you use to measure an object.” Based on a simplified version of Understanding by Design (UBD) and the Quebec Education Programme for Pre-school. 1 KINDERGARTEN -Demonstrate how the mice in the book measured the length of the shoe using the podium.
Introduce the Concept of Measurement (10 minutes)
-Have students make a circle and sit so that all the students can see the teacher. -Ask students what we can use to measure a notebook. “Now, let’s say we want to find out the length of this notebook. In other words, I want to “measure” the length of this notebook. But I don’t have a ruler. What do you think I can use? Show me your thumbs if you think I can use the magic hand, beads, paper clips, and linking cubes.” “We can’t use a magic hand because this is longer than the notebook. So we can’t measure the length of this notebook with the magic hand. We can’t use the beads either since they are going to roll all over the place. We can use paper clips since it’s smaller than the notebook and it stays still. We can also use linking cubes.” -Demonstrate how to measure the length of the notebook using linking cubes and paper clips.
Introduce the Group Activity (5 minutes)
Unfolding of the lesson -“So, our mission of the day is to measure the length of these dinosaurs. You will measure the length of five dinosaurs in total.” -Remind students of the precautions when measuring. “Can I change the unit when measuring an object? Can I start measuring with a paper clip and use a linking cube in the middle? Can I leave some spaces between units like this?” “We have to use the same unit at a time, and we don’t leave a space between units. Also, we need to make a straight line.” -Demonstrate how to measure the length of the dinosaur using linking cubes and paper clips.
Group Activity (20 minutes)
-Circulate the classroom during the activity and provide help whenever necessary. -Give 3 minutes for the groups to measure the length of each dinosaur. -Set a timer for 15 minutes. When the timer rings, set a timer for 5 minutes to clean up. Whole Group Discussion (10 minutes) -Let students share what they have written on their worksheet. Record their answers on the Smartboard. -Ask students how they felt about the activity. “Did you find the activity hard or easy? Conclusion What was the most difficult part?” -“Which one is the longest? Shortest?” -Tell students that actual dinosaurs were a lot bigger than the miniatures and we can use a human as the unit to measure the length of some dinosaurs. -The teacher will constantly check students’ understanding on measurement during the whole group discussion by asking different questions and letting students share their ideas. -The teacher will assess each student’s understanding on measurement and performance Assessment by observing them throughout the group activity by walking around the classroom. -At the end of the lesson, the teacher will collect the measuring dinosaur worksheets to check their answers.
Broad Areas of Learning
Health & Well Career Planning & Environmental Awareness Media Literacy Citizenship & Community being Entrepreneurship & Consumer Rights & Life Responsibilities Explanation: - Measurement is one of the fundamental topics of mathematics which students will encounter frequently throughout their lives not just at school but at the workplace. It’s very important to have a thorough understanding on measurement. Students will adopt different strategies to measure the length of objects using non-standardized units in various occasions.
Cross Curricular Competencies
Based on a simplified version of Understanding by Design (UBD) and the Quebec Education Programme for Pre-school. 2 KINDERGARTEN Uses Information Solves Problems Exercises critical Uses Creativity Adopts effective work judgement methods Uses information & Achieves their potential Cooperates with others Communicates communications appropriately technologies Explanation: -Students will use what they have learned about measurement when working on the group activity. They will employ an appropriate way to measure the length of an object to find out the length of each dinosaur miniature using the linking cubes and paper clips. -Students will find effective work methods for the group activity. For example, they can figure out effective ways to put units in a straight line to measure the length of a dinosaur. -Students will interact with others by listening to them and being open to differences. They will contribute to team efforts. -Students will learn to communicate with others using appropriate words and expressions.
