Manila today is one of the densest cities in the world, notable as much for its unruly physical growth as
for its economic expansion.
The Tondo is the largest slum of the country's capital. It has a high poverty incidence due to lack of
regular and decent jobs while social services like health and education are inaccessible. Many of the
residents depend on scavenging and working at the nearby seaport where they earn very meager
income.

Houses near railways
Squatter areas came into existence. Many refugees settled at Tondo. Foreshore land, a reclaimed area
north of Manila which was ear- marked to become a port district, or they built their shelters within.
Most houses in Tondo especially in the squatter are made up of light material that can easily start a fire
and spread quickly. Trains can cause for houses to move or shake because of the wind that comes along
with the speed of trains.
