20. Two men Alex, Ben and two women Cathy, Diana are contestants of a spelling competition. Suppose
that a contestant spelling a word correctly is an independent event, and the probabilities that Alex, Ben,
Cathy and Diana spell a word correctly are 0.6, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.3 respectively. Alex and Ben are in Team
1 while Cathy and Diana are in Team 2. The competition is divided into two stages.
Stage 1:
In each round, each contestant is required to spell a word. A team scores a round if at least one team
member can spell the word correctly. Stage 1 ends if there is exactly one team scores a round and the
team is the winning team; Otherwise, another round will be held.
(a) Find the probabilities that
(i) Team 1 does not score a round,
(ii) Team 2 scores a round,
(iii) Team 2 is the winning team.

Stage 2:
The two contestants in the winning team will each spell one more word. If only one contestant can spell
the word correctly, he/she will receive a prize money of $500. If both contestants can spell the word
correctly, they can each receive a prize money of $250. If no contestants can spell the word correctly,
they will not receive any prize money.
(b) Suppose Team 2 is the winning team. Find the expected prize money of Cathy. (2 marks)
