a. Reflexive Verben
- A reflexive verb is a verb that has an object which is the same as the subject of the verb ==> the
action of the reflexive verb is something one is doing to or for oneself. Some verbs are always
reflexive, others are not.
- require an additional reflexive pronoun, which can be in the accusative or the dative. Reflexive
means referring back. The reflexive pronoun refers back to the subject in the sentence.
- depends on the subject. It must always indicate the same person who indicates the subject.
- Personal-
- pronomen Reflexivpronomen
Akkusativ Dativ
- ich mich mir
- du dich dir
- er / sie / es sich sich
- wir uns uns
- ihr euch euch
- Sie / sie sich sich

- Reflexive verbs, in which the reflexive pronoun is in the accusative, often also have a prepositional
supplement. The infinitive is then " sich freuen auf". This verb group should be memorized with the
corresponding preposition.
- Normally the reflexive pronoun will be accusative. If the verb already has an accusative object,
however, then the reflexive pronoun will be dative. Note that you will only notice this difference in
the ich- and du-forms, since for all the other persons, the accusative and dative reflexive pronouns
are identical.
- Ich wasche mir das Gesicht.
- Ich habe mir beim Skifahren den Arm gebrochen.
- Note that the plural reflexive pronouns can sometimes be used to express that two people are doing
something to each other, and are thus sometimes interchangeable with the adverb "einander."
- Wir lieben uns. We love each other.
- Sie küssen sich. They kiss each other.
- Wir hassen uns. We hate each other.
- Beispiel:
- Ich freue mich auch für dich. I am also happy for you (accusative)
- Ich wasche mir die Haare. I wash my hair (dative)
- Ich wasche mich. I wash myself (accusative)
- Ich kämme mir die Haare. I comb my hair (dative)
- Er kämmt sie sich. He combs (his hair)
- Ich muss mich beeilen. I have to hurry
- Wie hast du dich erkältet? How did you catch cold?
- Etwas hat sich bewegt. Something moved.
- Be careful, because some verbs have a completely different meaning when they are used as a
reflexive verb. The table below provides an overview of reflexive verbs with a different meaning.
