Day 5

Title: Review and Assessment

Centers

Standards:

SS.K.G.1.2- Explain that maps and globes help to locate different places and that globes are a

model of the Earth.

SS.K.G.1.3- Identify cardinal directions.

SS.K.G.1.4- Differentiate land and water features on simple maps and globes.

LAFS.K.RL.1.1- With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a

text.

LAFS.K.SL.2.6- Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

LAFS.K.SL.1.2- Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or

through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting

clarification if something is not understood.

Objective: Students will be able to explain that maps and globes help locate places, understand

that globes are models of the earth, identify cardinal directions, and differentiate land and water

features on simple maps and globes.

Materials:

 Large globe

 Maps for students

 Large map to show

 Sticky notes

 Printed word search

 Laptops/iPads

 Internet connection

 Printed/laminated “which direction is home?” game

 Coloring utensils

 White cardstock/construction paper

Procedures

 Split students into groups for centers. Centers will be approximately 10 minutes long.

The teacher will walk around the room, ask questions, and clarify any instructions that

students do not understand.

 Center1: read aloud

o Students will listen to the read aloud and discuss the importance of understanding

maps

 Center 2: Article

o Students will read this article about maps and globes. They also have the option of

listening to it

o After reading, students will write down on a sticky note one thing they learned

from the website and stick it on the class map

 Center 3: Word search

o Students will complete this word search that contains the vocabulary that they

were learning this week

 Center 4: Which Direction is Home? Game

o Students will play the “Which direction is home?” board game

Evaluation:

 Students will be given instructions to make their own maps.

 Students will be instructed that their map can be make belief, but they need to include the

following: at least one body of water, at least one body of land, and the cardinal

directions.

 Student understanding will be measured by accuracy of placement of cardinal directions,

body of water and land.
