Introduction:
Low-cost portable boat for flood-prone areas.
as the name states, it is a low-cost boat for
rescue operations in flood-prone areas. The
design of the boat has been modified after
several tests and simulations to ensure safe
sailing and high impact strength to handle the
floating debris and other obstacles.

The material for the boat has been shortlisted

from several rare alloys and plastic to ensure
maximum efficiency with low manufacturing
costs.

6
Problem definition:

To create a low-cost portable boat for flood-prone

areas. We got the inspiration for this topic
because we live in Chennai, most of the monsoon
season our area gets flooded because of the
geometrical structure of the land, that is our area
is a low-level ground area so as a result the water
flows from the higher-level area to our area and
the water gets accumulated and causes the flood.
We have noticed that the boats which come to
provide supplies and in the worst case to rescue us
are made up of wood and covered with paints.
This is so primitive and has so many defects that
wood absorbs water, loses its property, and
becomes spongy, and the Maintenance is high. So,
we wanted to give Technical Answers for this
Real Word Problem and to find an apt material
other than wood to be used to build a boat.

7
Objectives:
 To improve the design of the
already existing boat to withstand
the tidal waves and debris.

 To improve the impact strength and

aerodynamics of the boat.

 To decrease the overall

manufacturing cost of boats.

 To select a better material for the

boat other than plywood which
gives better efficiency at a low cost

8
Experimental procedure:

9
Results:
After various testing and simulation, the
following materials and designs have been
shortlisted for the boat with specified impact
strength.
1. Polycarbonate (100%)
2. Aluminum (40-62%)
3. ABS (36-40%)
4. PE (29-31%)
5. FRP (6-16%)
6. Plywood with FRP reinforcement (6-14%)
7. Plywood (2-3%)

10
11
Conclusion:
With further simulation, experiments and expert
advice, it has been decided that polycarbonate
such as PVC and acrylic is the best option for the
boat material and previous designs have been
further simplified to reduce the cost.

The following design has been selected because it

provides the best sailing experience at a low cost.
