PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1 – WORKSHEET 1

Characteristics, Processes, and Ethics of Research

Name: _______________________________________________________________ Section: _____________ Score: __________

I. Identify the characteristics of research being described in each of the situations below. (USE LAS – 1)

_________________1. Eric identifies a problem for his research. After he has his findings for the first problem, he found out and identified
another problem that arose from his previous problem. He suggested that other researchers continue to research the newly found
problem.
_________________2. Annie uses the scientific method in doing her research procedures. She makes sure that all the instruments and all
the procedures she uses are valid before proceeding to the next step to assure that the final outcome and conclusions are also valid.
_________________3. Robbie was interested to research factors affecting the growth of fish in saltwater. He chose this topic because he
lives in an area near the seashore. He always walks near the shore in his free time, it will be easy for him to conduct observations and
gather the data he needs regarding his chosen topic.
_________________4. Grace has finished conducting research in her field of expertise. She wants to submit it in a journal for publication.
The National Journal Screening Committee wants to examine the validity of the results of Grace’s paper. The committee decided to include
Grace’s same paper since the result from the experiment of the committee is the same as the result reported by Grace on her paper.
_________________5. Irvin, after finishing his data analysis, still examines the results of the data analysis. Before he accepts or rejects his
hypothesis, he makes sure that he has established a high level of confidence in his data analysis so that he is confident and precise in his
interpretations of whether the results are significant or not.

II. Ethics is important in research because it keeps the researcher from committing errors while seeking knowledge and truth. It
promotes essential values that help researchers working on a topic to have a common understanding of how things should go
about. Identify the different ethical considerations we need to consider in conducting research. Select from the box below.

Be Objective Be Caring Be Objective Be Open Be a Person of Integrity Be Respectful

Be Trustworthy Be Responsible

________________1. Consider the legalities, rules, and regulations of an institution or government when conducting a study.
________________2. We should keep the confidentiality of all data and information contained in our research unless otherwise
needed to be known by the public.
________________3. We should give proper credit to whom credit is due.
________________4. Willing to accept suggestions and comments for improvement of your work.
________________5. We should be after the welfare and benefits of our subjects.
________________6. Sometimes the outcomes may not be what we expected, but we should still report these outcomes.
________________7. From designing your experiment to choosing your subjects, observations and analysis, bias should be
avoided.
________________8. We should be consistent with all our thoughts and actions.
