items on a map in different directions and identify different parts of a map and learn
about identifying state of Virginia and Washington D.C on a map, map legends, and
how to create a map.
Activity
 The students will start this lesson by all turning their
chairs to face the screen so that everyone has a clear
view of the white board. The teacher will pass out
worksheets that correspond with the fill the in blank
slide on the second to last slide of the presentation
as well an example of the major informational slides
on a map of Virginia, A map of the U.S. and a
compass. The teacher will then lead a discussion
first asking students what they know or think they
know about maps, the compass, and the capital of
the country and state. After a brief discussion the
student will then be asked to volunteer for the next
following slides and be asked to follow class rules
when coming up to the board. As a class we will
work together to place the answers in the correct
spaces using the Smart Exchange slideshow created
by Sarah Hankinson called “Geography Unit”.
 The first slides the teacher will lead the students in a
discussion going over the compass and its
directions. This slide will be followed by an activity
that calls on a student to come up to the board and
place different objects on the map in the different
directions, north, south, east, and west. If a student
is struggling to place an object, they can call on their
classmates for assistance and they will help that
classmate by giving a gentle reminder which
direction the item belongs. The students will take
turns coming up to the board and practicing the
compass and direction pictures for the next slides, 1-
17. After each slide, the answers are revealed on the
next one and the students could check to see if they
answered correctly.
 The next set of slides, 18-25, will explain to the
students what a map will look like and what a globe
will look like followed by important keys, capitals,
and water vs. land. The students will read over the
slides with the teacher and ask any questions before
moving on to the activity slides. The students will
be given a map key at the top of the slides and
below they will be asked to determine which keys
on the map are closest, farthest, and in what
direction they are placed. Just like in the first set of
activities students will volunteer to come up to the
board to drag their answers into the correct spot.
 The next activity, slide 26, will ask students to come
up to the board and drag the correct answers into the
