Table Tennis, or Ping-Pong, is an enjoyable sport but can be highly competitive. Each player
tries to outscore his/her opponent through skills, speed, strategy and stamina. Table Tennis is a
game played by many people around the world. In addition, Table Tennis is an Olympic sport. It
is the most popular indoor sport with millions of active players around the world. Table Tennis is
associated in 226 countries and territories.

As a requirement, the School Based Assessment for Physical Education and Sport instructs that
students are to host a competition. Each student was required to take the responsibility of one
role as an official in the competition. Students were also required to manage every aspect of the
competition such as planning, advertising and raising money for prizes. For this project, Table
Tennis was chosen because it was a liked sport and students had prior knowledge and experience
of the game.

Throughout the competition, each student was responsible for their respective role and a report
was provided on what they did. For this project, we took up the role of “Competition Secretary”.

HISTORY OF TABLE TENNIS

INTERNATIONAL HISTORY
Table Tennis, also known as ‘Ping-Pong’ and ‘Whiff-Whaff,’, is a sport in which two or four
players hit a lightweight ball also known as ‘ping-pong ball’, back and forth across a table using
small rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. A point is scored when a
player fails to return the ball within the rules. The objective in the game is to be the first to score
eleven (11) points. The sport is originated in Victorian England. The name ‘Ping-Pong’ was in
wide use before British manufacturer J. Jaques and Son Ltd trademarked it in 1901. The name
‘Ping-Pong’ then came to describe the game played using rather expensive Jacques equipment
with other manufacturers calling it ‘Table-Tennis’. Table Tennis has been an Olympic sport
since 1988 with several event categories. Table Tennis is governed by the worldwide
organization ‘International Table Tennis Federation’ (ITTF) founded in 1926. The first world
Table Tennis championships were held in London from December 6th to December 11th, 1926.

STANDARD RULES

Objective of the Game: The main objective of the game is to score 11 points before opponent
and points are scored or counted when a player fails to return the ball according to the game
rules. If the score becomes tied at 10 points each, the first player or pair needs to establish two
points lead to win. A match consists of winning the best of any odd number of games usually 3,
5 or 7 games. In this game, players hit the ball back and forth over the net and allow the ball
played towards them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it
bounces on the opposite side. Each player has two serves means after each two points have been
scored the receiving player becomes the serving player and so on until the end of game.

 The game is won by the player or team (2 players) score 11 points first. If both players

are at 10 points each, then you have to win by 2 clear points in order to win the game.

Each of them then makes a good return. In doubles, the server should make a good
service and then receiver makes a good return, the partner of the server then makes a
good return and the partner of the receiver, makes a good return and then each player
makes a good return in sequence.
 It is considered a let if the server hits the net when serving the ball. This occurs if the ball

REFLECTIONS
General Reflection
Our Tennis tournament turned out to be quite successful despite a few problems. It was held on
the 19th February 2021. The game was played between two teams i.e team A and team B. As
competition secretaries, we ensured that the tournament was well organized and executed, scores
of the game were collected, written to be given to press officials and provision of awards to be
distributed and recognition of achievements. We had the chance to watch each player and
generally watch the game.

The tournament game played turned out to be quite aggressive and competitive as each team
naturally wanted to win. However, there seemed to be some bias to the teams by officials who
were umpiring the game as the teams were sometimes awarded a point even though there was
fault in their service. But considering the number or persons who genuinely helped, the
tournament was a success. It ran smoothly except for few minor glitches.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

It was truly an amazing experience to work on this School Based Assessment. It took a while to
gather necessary information and certain guidelines to complete this SBA. Also it took some
time to get pictures to include in this SBA. This SBA was somewhat fun because we, the
members had a great experience in hosting a sports tournament.

A few recommendations would be better consistency and cooperation among the group members
even though they may not agree with each other. This can be done by having effective meetings
to discuss about this situation. Another recommendation would be having more and upgraded
sport gears and protective equipment for students at schools in order to influence and motivate
them in pursuing their abilities in sport and athletics field. This can be done by the school head
writing letters to the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport in collaboration with Ministry of
Education asking to implement this humble request.

CONCLUSION

At the end of the tournament, it was successful and enjoyable for everyone and was entertaining
for the crowd, since Table Tennis is an exciting game and is part of Guyanese culture. Our group
as well as other students gained an overall better insight of Table Tennis through the tournament.
We played our role of competition secretary to the best of our abilities. We think that the teams
showed excellent sportsmanship and that is what truly made this project a success although there
was a few glitches in the game and one winning team. At the end of the day, winning is not
everything, “There are more important things in life than winning or losing a game” – Lionel
Messi. It is about the passion and love for the game that makes it enjoyable and fun. Throughout
this tournament, it proved to be beneficial since members learned teamwork, strategy, respect
and discipline. Overall, this was a wonderful experience for all physical education students.
