CVE163 DESIGN OF STEEL AND TIMBER STRUCTURES EXAM III

1ST SEMESTER AY 2021-2022
DECEMBER 13, 2021
NAME: __________________________________________ ID NO: _____________________________
YEAR/COURSE: ________________________________ SCORE: ______________/ 20 (PASSING: 12)

Please read instructions first!

1. Please have only one final answer and minimize boxing answers which are not asked.
2. Please include the units of measure. No units of measure, no check for that answer.
3. Please answer the exam within 3 hours and 30 minutes.
4. Late submission will be subjected to penalty.
5. Please show your solutions.

Item I. Bolted, Riveted and Welded Connections (16 points)

An engineer is tasked to design the bearing-type connection of a steel section. His first design is
made up 8 - A307 bolts with threads excluded in the shear plane. The connection with its applied
load is shown in Figure 1.
The engineer first assumed that he will use a 25 mm diameter for each bolt. If this is the case,
1. Find the location of the neutral axis of the bolt arrangement. (2 points)
2. Find the moment of inertia of the bolt arrangement. (2 points)
3. Is the design safe against shearing? Why or why not? (2 points)
4. Is the design safe against tension? Why or why not? (2 points)

Suppose that the engineer changed his mind, and decided to replace the bolts with welds. He
designed the arrangement as shown in Figure 2. He wanted to use E70 fillet welds. If this is the case,
1. Find the location of the neutral axis of the weld arrangement. (2 points)
2. Find the moment of inertia of the weld arrangement. (2 points)
3. Find the resultant stress experienced by the weld on one-unit throat size. (2 points)
4. Find the required weld size. (2 points)
