Step-by-step guide to bound buttonhole

patch method
Instructor: Nicki LaFoille

• For the buttonhole welts, cut a patch 2” wide and

1” longer than the button.

• Interface the buttonhole area on the fabric wrong

side. Mark the buttonhole opening.

• Draw buttonhole markings on right side of the

garment fabric and wrong side of the patch,
centering the markings on the patch. Align
the patch and fabric markings with right sides
together.

• On the patch wrong side draw lines 1/8” to 1/4”

above and below button centerline, depending
on the desired welt width.

• Stitch on box.

• Slit along buttonhole centerline and into corners.

• Turn the patch to the wrong side; press.

• Fold upper portion of patch down along stitching

line, then back up, creating a fold that aligns in
the center of the buttonhole “window.”

• Repeat to create the lower welt by folding the

patch fabric; press and pin.

• Fold garment fabric back, exposing triangle end.

Stitch triangle and welts on or just next to the box
