Missouri Western State University Lesson Plan Template

Teacher Candidate: Natalie Smith Date of Lesson: 3/14/22

Class: EDU 303 Content Area: 4th Grade Math
__________________________________________________________________________
State Standards: 4.NF.A.2 Compare two fractions with different numerators and
denominators by creating common denominators. Recognize that comparisons are
only relevant when the two fractions refer to the same whole.
____________________________________________________________________________
Objectives: The 4th grade students will be able to compare fractions with the same
numerator and different denominators while participating in a class activity.
____________________________________________________________________________
Assessment: The students will all participate in a class activity, going over comparing
fractions using Boom Cards.
____________________________________________________________________________
Learning Activities (Procedures):
Pre-Lesson: For the mini unit, give the students a pre-test for data collection.

1. Talk about fractions, get the students to realize that a fraction is a part of a
whole.
2. Go over fractions with the same denominator. Which one is bigger? Reviewing
the symbols <,>,=. Share trick: Less than looks like an L. Do problems with
shading and with a numberline. Use colors and shade the number lines to
show which one is larger. Use Equivalent fractions number line worksheet
3. Ask about a fraction with the same numerator but different denominator. See
what the students think. Ask the students if we can compare them.
4. Open Boom Cards
a. Username: nsmith37@missouriwestern.edu
b. Password: natcat17
5. Do Boom cards activity as a class, calling on students to fill in the blanks.
____________________________________________________________________________
Instructional Strategies (Including Technology):
1. Pre-Test
2. Whole Group notes on document camera
3. Connecting to past knowledge by discussing what they know
4. Visually representing fractions in multiple ways
5. Boom Cards
____________________________________________________________________________
Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications: For students who might struggle
viewing the board as I am going over the material, they may move forward and sit on
the carpet.
