Analysis of Two Versions of “34+35” from Different Artists

The remix of the music video "34+35" with the additions of Megan Thee Stallion and

Doja Cat brings a unique sequel and continuation to the original music video by Ariana Grande.

The new music video focuses on the ending of the first video, showing the growth, development,

and happiness of the main character. The self discovery, change, growth, and embrace of

happiness in the two music videos shows the unique journey of Ariana Grande’s character.

The first music video shows the beginning of the story for Ariana Grande’s character. It

sets up the basis on which the main character grows and develops in the second music video.

This first music video is truly about overcoming one's struggles and coming out happier and

stronger than you were before. The music video starts out with the main character, played by

Ariana Grande, in a dark and dreary laboratory. You can see how visibly upset and frustrated that

she is with her expressions and appearance. She can then be seen trying to fix a robot that looks

like herself, but is struggling to succeed. This is the source of her frustration. She continues to

make attempts to fix the robot, and continues to show more anger at her continuous failures.

After her repeated failures, she finally fixes the robot and goes through a transformation. This

transformation is shown through both obvious physical changes, and more subtle emotional

ones. The lighting and outfits change, it is a brighter and happier environment. She is now

smiling and shows no sign of her previous sad disposition. This growth from a dark place into a

more positive successful light is why the music video connects to the audience with pathos. It is

an emotional change that calls for watchers to connect. These watchers can be anyone of any

age, race, or gender. Though I do think a large majority of these listeners might be people who

have overcome a hard emotional challenge in their lives. They can much more easily relate to the

video. I also think the audience might be older because of the more explicit nature of the lyrics.

The remix of the first music video shows a continuation of the ending of the first music

video. It shows the aftermath of the main character discovering herself because of the

transformation in the first video. The remix is about embracing change and being happy and

successful. The video starts with Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, and Doja Cat in a bright,

fancy, and elegant setting. This shows Ariana being in the aftermath of her character

development and just embracing the growth she has gone through. The characters are seen in

luxury clothing. They are eating fancy food. They are simply being happy and joyful. Ariana,

Megan, and Doja are all very apparently emotionally fulfilled and have no shortage of material

items either. There is a very obvious and apparent difference from the sad, frustrated, and

gloomy Ariana Grande from the first music video. It is showing how Ariana is still very

successful and is now embracing those changes. Also continuing into the remix is the connection

to the readers through Pathos. Watchers and listeners who related to the first video and the

discovery of their true selves can relate to being happier after their initial change. Anyone can

relate to this type of joy and self discovery, but I do think it would be more watched and enjoyed

by those who related to the first music video. Those who related to overcoming hardships in the

first music video can relate to the joy that comes after. There is still the exception for the more

mature audience, even more so than the first video because the video is much more explicit than

the first.

Over all, the storyline throughout the two different music videos makes it a wonderful

story about growth and change. From the beginning of the story, where the main character is

struggling to succeed and feel happy. Then to the hard earned success of finally discovering

herself. Finally that moment when she can finally truly be proud, happy, and successful. The

story of failure to success is a perfect example of a way in which many different types of

watchers and listeners can relate through emotion. This emotional connection played a vital part

in allowing watchers and listeners to connect with pathos. Since this type of emotional difficulty

can be seen in almost anyone of any race, age, gender, economic status, or education level it

makes for a large variety in audience. This is assisted by the popularity and reach of the artists

themselves in both versions. The music videos both come together beautifully to create a unique

story about growth, change, and happiness.
