God’s Plan

Music videos can show a powerful message in order to persuade people to create

positivity. In the first music video from the official Drake channel, Drake wanted to let the

audience understand the importance of giving back to the community. In the second video from

Vevo, the message was a little harder to determined but it was to inform the audience that

distractions can harm you and prevent your goals and ambitions. The Two music videos from the

song "God's Plan" by Dake both demonstrate a positive message that can impact others and your

community. The first being to give back to your community and the second don't let distractions

get in the way of your goals in life.

The first music video was the official drake music video. This video was very interesting

as it was not like typical music videos, this one was filmed with normal people in a real

community. That being said the music video emphasizes pathos more than any other rhetorical

appeal. For example, the video shows a clip of Drake in a store buying any groceries the people

of the community needed. This demonstrates the emotion Drake is trying to demonstrate to the

viewer. By drake showing an act of kindness and giving back to the community he believes he

can inspire people to also help the community. Another example of drake showing emotion or

Pathos is by giving a young girl a scholarship to the Miami Flordia. This is to get an emotional
response out of the viewer. It is meant to help show that college is very important, however

expensive. The use of Pathos within the music video helps Drake get his message across which is

giving back to your community is very important.

The second music video was from Vevo and was a music video that was designed to

teach people to not let distractions prohibit them from achieving their goals. In the video, there

was a lady that represented distraction and obstacles. This lady went on to distract an older man

who seemed to be successful, as a result, the man was killed because the lady was able to take

his attention away. This shows how Drake wanted to appeal to the viewer with pathos or

emotion. He did this by providing a very extreme example so that the viewer feels as distractions

are bad. Another example of pathos is when Drake was sitting down and the lady tried to distract

him, he didn’t let that happen and as a result, was still a successful man. This means that by

Drake not letting any distractions get in the way of his ambitions he was on the right track to

achieve his goals. Drake used this example to try to relate this to the viewer, even though people

may seem nice you always have to stay focused and not let others sway your opinions. This

music video by Drake used Pathos to demonstrate his message of don’t let distractions get in the

way of your goals and ambitions.

In both of the music videos, there are similarities and differences between the lessons and

how they were taught. One similarity between the Official Drake video and the Vevo video is

that both mainly used Pathos or emotional appeal in order to demonstrate each of the lessons.

This was important because when both videos used Pathos the viewer was able to feel a

connection to the people in the music videos to apply the lesson to their own lives. Another

similarity is that there is a main character that has to choose to follow the message or idea that is

being described throughout the video. Both main characters decide to agree to the message that
was told in the video and as a result, were happier people. A difference between the two music

videos was what the main idea was affecting. In the Offical video, the main idea not only

impacted the main character but also impacted the community as a whole. This is important

because it shows the viewer by giving back to the community you not only make yourself happy

but also the community. In the Vevo music video, the lesson only impacted the main character.

This was significant because it shows the viewer that it’s okay to focus on yourself and block any

distractions that get in your way of accomplishing a goal. Another difference between the two

music videos is that the Official music video is upbeat/positive whereas the Vevo music video

was more depressing and unpleasant. Being positive is very crucial to the development of the

Official video because showing the good things one can accomplish within a community makes

the viewer want to help out. Being more depressing and unpleasant makes the viewer understand

that the message is very serious, this allows them to want to apply the message to their own lives.

The two versions of the song “God’s Plan” by Drake show that both of the versions

wanted to provide a positive message to the viewer to help them in their lives. However, they

didn’t do this in the same matter. Both videos used the main character with a goal, however, both

of these characters go about accomplishing these goals differently. Both videos help the viewer

to understand the importance of helping the community and to stay focused in order to

accomplish your goals and be successful.
