Self-Reflection
Throughout the year of college composition, writing has been a large part of my grade
and there are many things that one can learn from writing - just by doing it. An important factor
that I have picked up on with writing is that it takes time and good ideas don’t accumulate within
one sitting. There are multiple occasions that a writer’s first idea doesn’t make it in the final
draft. It takes time to brainstorm, edit and put final thoughts into a writing piece and some
writers expect a rough draft to be perfect the first try. With many forms of edits, there can be
multiple changes to make an essay better. Not everything written down on the first day will end
up being submitted and that’s okay, because a writing piece is a learning process and there many
While writing takes time, one needs to be capable of managing their time to efficiently
get their writing done. I have struggled with doing essays during the time given. I will brainstorm
for a small period of time and write a few words, putting me behind. Time can be a writer’s best
friend, but it can also be an enemy if not used correctly. Unfortunately, during some of the essays
written this year, I did not use it correctly and it ended with me staying up late the night it was

We were assigned 4 essays to write this school year and my favorite was the literary
criticism essay. I was intrigued by my book choice, so it made writing the essay easier. I was
able to fully comprehend the material in which was able to be seen through my essay grade. I
think a large reason as to why I liked this essay was because I felt I was in control about what I
was writing and who it was about. It makes an essay better when the writer knows what they’re
writing about and can confidently say they agree with what their piece says. It was the easiest
When given an essay to write about in the future, I will be much more prepared for the
process. When beginning the school year, I would note some thoughts and start writing anything
I could think of. I find it much more efficient to make an organizer of some sort and put down all
thoughts before writing. This can be beneficial to a writer because it decreases the chances of
forgetting good points and it makes everything neater. I would then go onto writing the rough
draft and getting it edited by peers and teaches. It would be altered, and I would submit my final
