Case details
Small insurance company was a proposal to install
electronic data processing

The proposal to install the equipment was presented by


Rajesh Khanna
Had recommended a complete overhaul of the jobs within
the company

The management consultant had been engaged by the


company to diagnose of highturnover

changed the organization structure from functional to client
basis

The present organization included separate departments to


issue policies collect premiums charge benefeciaris and
process loan applications

The employees complained their jobs were boaring and

monotonous they staed with the company was because they

liked small company atmosphere


The jobs must be altered to provide greater motivation but

work Redesign opportunities were limited

efficiency in handling transactions

The only way they can Redesign jobs is to maintain


efficiency. or there won't be any jobs to redesign because
they out of business and internal operations manager to
executive that excessive turnover and to maintain acceptable
productivity

The narrow and depth of jobs reduced training time to a


minimum and also to hire temporary hands to meet peak
loads

Moreover they change the job profile of people would mean


that they must change the jobs of managers

The bottom line is that EDP will enable to maintain the


present efficiency but with the present jobs and not

greater gains

So it comes down to what price willing and able to pay for
improving the satisfaction of the customers.

Q1 What care Characters of the employees jobs will be


changed if the consultants recommendations are expected ?

expected @expilgin Ans:The core characteristics that needs


to be changed according to consultant's is the job range.
Employees only had a job depth but very little job range
The consultant suggested the company to change operation
structure to a client basis from function orientation in which
each employee would handle every aspect of service as
issuing policies collecting premiums change benefeciaris
processing loan applications pertaining to a particular
policyholder. The job depth is considered as the source of
knowledge base and expertise in the firm

Q2 What are the alternatives redesign stratergies should be


considered? For example job relation and job enlargement
are possible what are the relevant consideration for these
and other designs in the context of this company

Ans: Redesign a job by altering its job range can be


performed by either

Job rotation or job enlargement. Job enlargement is


considered a horizontal restructuring method, in which the
jobs is enlarged by adding related tasks
Q3 : What would be your decision in this case? What should
the management be willing to pay for employees
satisfaction? Define your answer

Ans:in my opinion combining the ideas of job enrichment and


socio technical theory will be the best fit here and this will
make individuals to make important decisions

CONCLUSION
Job enrichment adds new sources of job satisfaction by
increasing the level of responsibility of the employee is an
expert in their own domain so the Organization is very
efficient and give individual tasks to complete the tasks
