Regular (Closed-book) Date: 07/05/2019

Weightage: 100 Marks Duration: 180 min.

Instructions:
1. A separate answer-sheet is provided for Part-A. Rough work for Part-A may be
done on the last two pages (four sides) of the main answer-sheet.
2. Part-B is to be written on the main answer-sheet.

Part-A: Closed-book [15 × 3 Marks, Duration: first 90 min.]

Q1. The voltage, v(t), and the current, i(t), for a circuit element are as follows:
v(t) = 2 + 5 cos(2π50t) + 3 cos(4π50t + π4 ) V,
i(t) = 1.5 + 2 cos(2π50t − π6 ) + 1.1 cos(4π50t − π6 ) A.
Determine the power absorbed by the element.

Q2. For the current i(t) = 8 2 sin(2π50t) + I3 2 sin(6π50t) + I5 2 sin(10π50t) A, the
THD is 8%. Calculate the value of the fifth harmonic current, I5 , when I3 = 1.5I5 .
Q3. A single phase controlled half-wave rectifier is fed from a single phase 230 V, 50 Hz
AC source. It produces an average output voltage of 96.6 V across a 200 Ω resistor.
Calculate the RMS value of the output voltage.
Q4. A single phase fully controlled full-wave bridge rectifier is connected to a single
phase 230 V, 50 Hz AC supply. The load on the rectifier is RLE type with R=5 Ω,
E=80 V and an inductor L large enough to cause a constant load current. Determine
the firing angle α (in degrees) such that the power absorbed by the DC source (E) is
800 W.
Q5. A three phase fully controlled bridge rectifier is fed from a three phase 440 V, 50 Hz
AC supply. The rectifier feeds an RL load with R=75 Ω and an inductor L large enough

Q6. A single phase ON-OFF control-based AC to AC voltage controller is connected to
a single phase 230 V, 50 Hz AC source. The load is R type with R=50 Ω. If the power
absorbed by the load is 500 W, then calculate the input power factor.
Q7. For Question No. Q6, calculate the average value of the thyristor current.
Q8. A three phase half wave AC-to-AC voltage controller is fed from a three phase
440 V, 50 Hz AC source. The controller supplies a three-phase star-connected resistive
load of 100 Ω per phase. If the delay angle is 100◦ , calculate the three-phase input VA

width modulation technique with four pulses per half cycle of the output voltage. The
width of each pulse is 30◦ . Calculate the RMS value of the output voltage.
