resistor. The rectifier is supplied from a transformer with turns ratio 5:1. The input supply of the
transformer is 230 V, 50 Hz. The average current must be limited to 5 A. Calculate (a) the
conduction angle γ of the diode, (b) the current limiting resistance R, (c) the power rating of the
resistor, (d) the rectifier efficiency and (e) the peak inverse voltage (PIV) of the diode. [α = 0.587

b. Calculate commutation angle µ, Vd, and Pd when Vs = 120 V at 60 Hz
c. Plot the is waveform and calculate µ, Vd, and Pd if vs has a 60 Hz square waveform with
an amplitude of 200 V and Ls = 5 mH.

6. In the below circuit, assume the ac-side impedance to be negligible. Instead, an inductance Ld is
placed between the rectifier output and the filter capacitor. Derive the minimum value of Ld in
terms of Vs, ω, and Id that will result in a continuous id assuming that the ripple in vd is negligible.
7. A three-phase full-wave uncontrolled rectifier is connected to the point of common coupling (PCC)
through an inductor Lf as shown in below figure using single-line diagram of a three-phase system.
The dc-side current of the converter, Io is assumed to be constant. The Transmission line impedance
can be assumed as purely inductive and is represented by Lt. The generating station three-phase
voltage is balanced and purely sinusoidal. Calculate the 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonic component of
the PCC voltage with the following parameters. Vg = 400 V, 50 Hz, Io = 10 A, Lt = 1 mH per
phase, Lf = 0.2 mH per phase. Neglect commutation interval. Calculate average output voltage for
