Re: Design Challenge 2

Justification
For my design challenge I chose to make a brochure for Zeta Tau Alpha. ZTA is a sorority here at SHSU.
Their colors are turquoise blue and steel gray. ZTA’s philanthropy is breast cancer education and
awareness. Because of these two things, I wanted to incorporate colors that represented the organization. I
therefore made sure that my color palette included turquoise blue and pink (for breast cancer awareness). I
wanted to create a design that was both fun and professional. I therefore chose bright colors, abstract
designs, and cursive letters while also ensuring the design was clean and easy to read. The typefaces I
chose complement each other well because they are so different. It is important to create contrast by using
two very different typefaces because it intrigues the reader and helps them point out important information.
For the two pictures I used in the brochure, I chose pictures that matched my color palette. If you notice, in
one of the pictures the girls are wearing “Think Pink” t-shirts and in the other turquoise blue hats. It helps
to make the overall design look appealing when the images correlate with the color scheme of the
document.

Audience
My audience for the brochure is incoming freshman girls. The key points of the brochure are to
inform the specific audience about how Zeta Tau Alpha is making a difference in the world, their
involvement on campus, and the love and friendships that come with becoming a Zeta. Obviously, the
main goal is to persuade girls to want to join the organization. Because of this, I wanted the design to
be very fun yet also easy to navigate so that the reader can get all the information they need. I think
the design is perfect for the specific audience because the colors are very intriguing, the pictures
portray girls that genuinely enjoy being in the organization, and the informational text provide the
reader with a general idea of what it means to be a Zeta. Lastly, the contact information section is
also fitting for the specific audience as it provides the organization’s social media accounts which the
majority of young adult girls will want.

Changes after peer review

After the peer review portion of the assignment, I did not make too many changes. I on my own decided to
add a border around the cover logo and the contact information because I felt that without a border, they
both appeared to just be randomly on the pages. I also liked how the borders correlated with the frames
around the two pictures which added a bit of repetition. In the peer review I was told my colors
complemented each other well and that all of my text were easy to read. The person who reviewed my
brochure also mentioned that all of the information seemed easy to locate. They however informed me that
my “Philanthropy” section appeared a bit cramped. To fix this I lowered the text a bit on the page and
spread out the two paragraphs a bit more. They also told me to move my contact information to the back of
my brochure however, I chose not to do so. I like the contact information in the inside of my brochure
because it will ensure the reader will find it. You cannot always be sure that the reader will think to flip the
brochure over and look at the back of it therefore, I don’t think it is a great idea to put your contact
information on the back page.
