Introduction

For my media coursework I have created a
music and fashion magazine, i decided to
incorporate fashion as I thought it would
make it a bit different and give it something
more. I focused on various real well known
artists as some kind of ‘stimulus’, these were
Elisa Doolittle, Katy Perry, Paloma Faith. I
created a front cover for the magazine, a
contents page and a double page spread. I
worked alone throughout this project and
believe what I have created has been
successful in relation to how I planned it to
be.

In what way does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?

My genre of magazine is music fashion, it focuses mainly on
music but with different elements of fashion. It is created for
females but could also be for males who had interest in
music fashion. It was vital that I created it to be as realistic
as possible for this reason I did much research into different
existing magazines to help me create my own. Incorporating
fashion into my genre was successful and worked well, it
gave the magazine a larger potential audience which in
theory would be better for money making. I believe my ideas
worked effectively, this is represented through my audience
feedback.

My front page immediately addresses the fact
that the magazine also focuses on fashion, this is
made noticeable through the style of clothing
used in the model. As well as this some of the
captions on the front cover focus on fashion and
draw the reader in and make them want to look
inside and read more, it is vital that the magazine
front cover is interesting to catch the buyers eye
as soon as they see it. I also tried to make my
double page spread interesting by using one of
the most interesting quotes from the interview
again to catch the readers and make them think
‘ I want to go on and read more, the quote I used
was, ‘music is my life, it always has been’ this
would make the reader want to find out more
about the artists history and also find out more
about them. The colours and pictures used also
need to be interesting and eye catching therefor I
have used large fun pictures and bright eye
catching colours such as pinks, greens, blues.

How does your media product represent
particular social groups?

For my music magazine I have represent music stars and celebrities. I have tried to create
an artist similar image wise to Elisa Doolittle and Katy Perry as they are both successful
artists. To do this I had to think a lot about the image. I researched into both of my chosen
artists styles and looked at different images of them to try and make my artist slightly
similar. It was essential to ensure that my artist looked the best on the front cover image
to make the eye catching and make people want to buy it. I also had to buy various
magazines and read different celebrity interviews to make my narrative interesting, it
was key to make sure that my text was interesting so the reader would possibly buy the
magazine to read it. Much research was needed to ensure that it represented that group
of people well, here are some of the images I chose that I wanted mine to be similar to.

media product and why.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

For my target audience I have chosen females aged 16-25, the
reason for this is because I think has potential it is a large
range. I have created my target audience by using GRASS,
this helps me to define my audience properly. Gender-
female Race- white Age- 16-25 Social economic status –
Working class. The reason I have chosen this particular
target audience is that I think that this age range of people
would be most interested in music fashion and females
especially, also I think that younger people are more likely to
purchase them as they find most interest in these types of
things.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK IN RELATION TO AUDIENCE,
HAS IT WORKED.
How did you attract and address your
audience.

When creating something that will be available for purchase it
is essential that all elements are covered to make the product
its best.
To try and make my magazine the best it could be and as
realistic as possible it was essential for me that I was
addressing all the main elements of a real life magazine,
therefore I had to ensure that I was using bright colors, a
variation of colors is needed to set the mood and also
highlight the type of artist that the magazine focuses on.
I also had to ensure that I was using bold writing, italics
and different fonts, it Was essential to do this so that the
front cover drew attention to potential buyers and made
it eye catching and stand out so that people would
want to buy it. The fashion element was also very
important as I had to ensure that I was making my artist
look at her best for my cover so that people would look
at it and immediately want to read about her.
What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of
constructing your product?

Whilst creating my project I have had to use
many different technologies. One of the
main things I have had to use is a APPLE
MAC computer, this was new to me as I had
not done this before and I found it quite a
challenge, I had to use two different
programmes – Photoshop and InDesign, I
found these quite difficult to use therefore it
required a lot of work.
I used Photoshop to edit all my photos for
my magazine, then I used InDesign to create
it. I also used blogger to update how my
project was going, this helped me to keep
track of what I was doing and what I still
had left to do.
I also had to train to use the lighting
equipment for when I was taking my photos
of my artist, I also had to be trained how the
use the camera properly to.
What I have learnt..

I have learnt many different things and many different
techniques from constructing my project.
I have learned how to successfully edit photos to a
professional quality, I have also learnt to create
magazine front covers to a professional quality. I have
learnt how to use the studio to take pictures and how to
use the lighting system. Over all I have learnt quite a lot
from doing my project.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When looking back onto my preliminary tasks it is very apparent that I have made
many changes and progressed in many different ways. My preliminary task was
very plain and not eye catching or realistic whatsoever, I didn’t have much
experience at the beginning therefore my prelim was not very good and it showed
my lack of experience with the equipment.

OVERALL

Overall I believe that I have done well with my project and that it
works well, my audience feedback also reflects this. I think that my
key strengths were research and the design of the product, I think
that the use of my research helped me to create a good design. I
think that my weaknesses were using Photoshop, I slightly
struggled using it throughout the project even up to the end, I also
think that another of my weaknesses was meeting deadlines.
Despite some of my weaknesses I think that my finished project
has worked well and been successful on a whole.
