Surveying Practical
In this part of the practical students are required test an automatic level. The
following will be required:
Method:
1 Measure out 3 points (A,B,C) 30m apart, and mark them on the ground
2 Set up the level at the centre point B, and put the staff at A
6 Compensator Test: While sighting the staff, turn the footscrew in the line of the telescope
approx. ¼ turn, but the bubble should stay mostly within its circle. The crosshairs should
not move off the reading, if it does the compensator is sticking and the instrument needs
servicing.
7 Read the staff, book the entry, read the staff again.
8 Move the staff to point C, sight the staff, read the staff, book the entry, read the staff
again.
10 Sight the staff, read the staff, book the entry, read the staff again.
11 Move the staff to point A, sight the staff, read the staff, book the entry, read the staff
again.
In this part of the practical students are required to use a laser level. The
following will be required:
Students are required to use the laser level to carry out a detail survey of the front of the Simon
Perry building.
2 Use the Laser level to record a sufficient number of points to draw up a partial
(ground floor) elevation of the Simon Perry building. Include all: windows; doors;
floor levels; ground levels; footpaths; etc, in the drawing
3 Use the tape measure to record the necessary horizontal distances.
The above Two Peg Test calculations and laser level detail survey must be submitted within 2
weeks of this lab. Lab Reports must include: Scope & Purpose of Practical; Results; Analysis &
Conclusion.
