"Stunting is actually closely related to nutritional intake from the beginning of a child's
life. Therefore, it is not true to say that a short body is difficult to prevent because
malnutrition is difficult to prevent. In fact, good nutrition from an early age can help
children grow up healthy."

Stunting has long been a national priority issue, after the World Health Organization (WHO)
designated Indonesia as a country with poor nutritional status. This determination is based on
the fact that stunting cases in Indonesia exceed the tolerance limit set by the WHO, which is a
maximum of one-fifth of the total number of children under five (about 20 percent). Even
after a decline of up to seven percent, the number of stunting under-fives in Indonesia is still
at 30.7 percent.

Stunting is caused by lack of nutritional intake for a long time, especially in the first 1,000
days of life, causing growth and development disorders. Toddlers with stunting have a lower
or shorter height (dwarf) than their peers. This condition not only reduces self-confidence,
but also affects the quality of life of toddlers in the future.

The problem of stunting is often considered a hereditary factor (genetic) so that many parents
accept it and do nothing to prevent it. In fact, children's height is more influenced by factors
other than genetics, namely behavior, nutrition, environment, and health services. In other
words, stunting is a preventable problem.

Malnutrition as a child also has a negative impact on energy balance, regulation of food
intake, susceptibility to the effects of high-fat foods, and changes in insulin sensitivity. This
causes stunting toddlers to be susceptible to degenerative diseases. So, how to prevent
stunting?

 Meet children's nutrition, especially in the first 1,000 days of life. One of them is by
giving exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continued until the child is two
years old.
 MPASI can be given after the child is more than six months old. Make sure your
child gets a balanced nutritious diet during their growth period.
 Routinely check the child's growth and development at the Posyandu or the nearest
health facility.
 Maintain clean water and sanitation. One of them is by providing clean water,
regularly washing hands with soap, and not defecating indiscriminately.

The characteristic of stunting children are :

 Slow growth
 Face looks younger than his age
 Delayed tooth growth
 Poor performance in focus and learning memory
 Ages 8-10 years, children become quieter, don't make much eye contact with
those around them
 Toddler weight does not increase and even tends to decrease.
 The development of the child's body is hampered, such as late menarche (girls'
first menstruation).

The following is the impact of stunting on children:

The short-term impact of stunting is disruption of brain development, intelligence,

disturbances in physical growth, and metabolic disorders.

The long-term impact, stunting that is not handled properly as early as possible has an impact
on:

 Reduce the cognitive development ability of the child's brain

 Weak immune system so it's easy to get sick
 High risk of metabolic diseases such as obesity
 Heart disease
 vascular disease
 Difficulty learning
