1st Grade Narrative

The first passage I chose to present to Oliver was a Level 1 Narrative called “The

Surprise”. I asked Oliver to answer three concept questions for me before we read. Oliver

showed a 67% familiarity with the subject. He read the passage orally and read in meaningful

phrase groups. He read the story with slight expression at times and seemed to be interested in

the narrative. Oliver had a total of 3 miscues while reading this passage. Despite these miscues,

Oliver is still reading at an Independent level. When Oliver finished the passage, I asked him to

answer six comprehension questions. He was able to answer four out of the six questions

correctly, resulting in an Instructional level of comprehension.
