Self-Evaluation

What were your strengths during this process?

I believe I assessed the student properly and established a trusting relationship. While
administering the QRI Passages, I was careful to analyze miscues and accurately determined the
reading level of the student. Steven was a joy to work with and we had daily conversations about
dinosaurs and other animals that interested him. Steven understood my instruction and happily
participated in lessons.

Where did you need improvement?

Through this experience, I have determined that I must improve my ability to schedule
lessons. I performed well while assessing the student but ordering the lessons and identifying
goals for the student was tricky. I wanted to focus on the student’s fluency but incorporated
vocabulary into instruction. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I need to learn to focus on
one skill at a time.

What have you learned about reading intervention?

Last year’s Reading case study required us to assess the student. This year’s case study
was much more in-depth and I had the opportunity to improve a student’s reading abilities. I
have learned how assessments lead to proper lesson development and how to shape instruction so
it is tailormade to the needs of a student. This is a great skill to have because when I am running
a full classroom, I must be able to recognize the variety of levels students are on and how they
learn at different paces..
