Reading Intervention Lesson Plan

Student: Steven Tzimbal

Date: December1 , 2022

Goal:

After teacher-Jed instruction, the student will be able to explain why an author or narrator uses
tone in writing with 100% accuracy.

Given 4 th Grade reading passages, the student will be able to identify tone words that corresp~nd
with small passages in 3 out of 3 trials with 100% accuracy.

Rationale: I believe understanding the tone of a text is an important part of fluency. The reader
must be able to reflect on the author's use of words to determine the meaning of passages.
Providing the student with tone words allows him to analyze the text and determine why certain
words were used. I would like the student to explain his answer using words in order to improve

communication skills.

Pennsylvania State Core Standard(s): CC.1.2.11-12.F - Evaluate how words and phrases

shape meaning and tone in texts.

Steps of Explicit Instruction:

What is tone?
Tone in reading is similar to a person's tone of voice. You can't hear the narrator, so you
have to infer the tone from his/her words.
Tone describes the narrator's attitude or voice
Present a list of "tone" words
o Happy
o Regretful
o Scary
o Sad
o Excited
- Present the student with a short passage

Piping down the valleys wild,

Piping songs of pleasant glee,
On a cloud I saw a child,
And he laughing said to me:
'Pipe a song about a Lamb!'
So I piped with merry cheer.
'Piper, pipe that song again. '
So I piped: he wept to hear.
- We can see what kinds of words the author uses to show his/her attitude toward a subject.
- What word from the tone word list would you use to describe this passage?

Assessment:

Ask the student, "Why does an author use tone?" - analyze the student's answer and provide

feedback as necessary.

One at a time, present the student with three passages where an author uses tone. Ask the student
to use the tone word list to help him find the answer. Ask the student what made him pick that

word.
