Reflection

Hundreds of years ago, Bataan was discovered and founded. The name came from the
conclusion of folklores that signify the fondness of children on Batan. The province is rich in tourist
attractions like pristine beaches, mystical caves and falls, and virgin forests. It was home to different
organisms. But, the first place that comes into mind when the province’s name’s heard is Mt. Samat
Shrine.

Mt. Samat Shrine is an appreciation of the courage and heroic act of Filipino and American
troops. They gave their lives during World War II. They aimed to keep the freedom and democracy of
the country from Japanese invaders. It depicts significant historical events that occurred in the province.
And since there is history, then there is art.

I was in grade 5 when I first went to the spot. However, it took years for me to appreciate what
was at the place. The Memorial Cross was structured with steel and concrete. While broken granolithic
marble is utilized to decorate the façade and significant figures are inscribed on its base. The sculptures
are a memoir of the national heroes and their executions. The artwork was entitled Nabiag na Bato and
was sculpted by Napoleon Abueva.
Aside from the cross, an art gallery and war museum are found. The masterpieces designed by
Cenon Rivera are presented. The stained-glass murals portray various sacred pictures. Photographs and
paintings during the war were placed on the walls. It showcases different scenarios that happened
during the battle. Antique guns, equipment, and money used are also displayed. Most importantly, there
was a diorama of the province presented. It includes the different significant events of World War II.

I realized that Mt. Samat itself is a mirror of Bataan’s history. The shrine depicts the richness of
the province’s art forms. It is evidence that Bataan is still a province and still exists, despite the tragedies
and calamities. It also signifies how strong and resilient it is. Nevertheless, its experiences are etched
and preserved using its rich art forms at the Shrine of Valor.
