How to Apply a Wig

The purpose of this document is to instruct you on how to properly apply a frontal lace wig.
This is a gender-neutral article; in which men and women can use these instructions. This is a
very tedious process, so patience and being punctilious is very important. This process can will
take about 15 – 45 minutes.

Tools Needed:
 Lace Frontal Wig
 Alcohol or soap and water
 Scalp protector
 Soft wig cap
 Makeup foundation
 Makeup brush
 Wooden applicator stick
 Lace glue/adhesive, wig tape
 Scissors
 Fine tooth comb
 Flatiron or curling wand
 Blow dryer

Instructions:
1: Prep your hair with flattened cornrow braids.
 Cornrow: Braids in which the hair is braided closely to the scalp. At least 2 inches
of hair is needed to be able to braid to the scalp. This will give the wig a flat
foundation, preventing a bulky or bumpy wig.

2: Clean the skin near your hairline with soap and water or alcohol to remove oil and dirt.
3: Spray your hairline with a scalp protector. Use a blow dryer to make sure the spray is dried
across the hairline.
4: Place wig cap over your head like a hat. A wig cap is the base material of a wig that mimics
the shape of the head.

5: Apply a makeup foundation that matches your skin color on the cap near the hairline with a
makeup brush.
6: Use a wooden stick to apply wig glue/adhesive/wig tape to your hairline where the wig will
be attached. Blow dry the glue until it becomes tacky (sticky).

7: Gently apply the wig until the edges align with your hairline
8: Hold the wig on the sides and move your hand towards the center of the wig. Carefully pull
the wig forward towards the forehead.
9: Adjust the wig to match your hairline where the wig adhesive is applied.
10: Once adjusted correctly, press the lace of the wig onto the hairline, over the wig adhesive
using a fine-tooth comb.

11: Cut off extra lace that doesn’t match the natural hairline, do so by cutting in a zig zag
motion to give a more natural hairline appearance.

12: Part the wig to give it a natural hairline. You can do this by using a fine toothed comb, which
you can use to give the wig a straight middle part or a straight/curved side part.

13: Style the wig as desired. If going for a straight look, use a flat iron. If going for a curled look,
use a curling iron.
