Quarter 2 Week 1
TLE_HEHD9-12HP-IIa-b-1: LO 1. Fundamentals in Hair perming
At the end of the session, I would be able to:
1.1 Express ideas clearly the benefits of hair perming.
1.2 Appreciate client consultation in hair perming services.
1.3 Use appropriate tools, materials in permanent waving.
1.4 Perform the steps in sectioning, blocking and winding of hair.
1.5 Observe safety rules and reminders in hair perming.
Concepts:
Perming is the permanent chemical process that changes the structure of the
hair. It can be damaging to the hair if you do not understand the effect of the
chemicals on the hair structure. It is essential to know what chemical in the perm is
capable of doing to the hair and scalp because the results can be disastrous.
Therefore it is very important to understand the structure, especially the cortex
region where the chemical change takes place during perming in order to achieve a
good result.

Fundamentals of hair perming involves three stages:

1. The softening stage-Perm lotion

opens and swells the cuticle, so that it
can enter the cortex.

2. The molding stage-the

perm lotion enters the
cortex where it
deposits hydrogen.

Jcantara Page 1
ILOILO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Luna Street, La Paz, Iloilo City
(for INHS classroom use only SY 2022-23) TLE – Hairdressing 10

3. The fixing stage-neutralizing removes

the hydrogen from the cortex by adding
oxygen (a process of oxidation).

Every client has a different concept on how they want their perm to look.
The only way to meet client satisfaction is to determine their expectations. Talk and
discuss with the client in a friendly but professional way.
Client Consultation:

● The desired hair style and amount of curls.

● Photos or magazine pictures may help to make this clear to both the client and
the stylist.

● The client’s lifestyle. Do they have leisure time or a demanding schedule that
requires a low- maintenance style?

● How the hairstyle relates to overall personal image.

● Is the client concerned about current fashion trends?

● Previous experience.

● Was the last perm satisfactory?

● If not, what were the problems?

Jcantara Page 2

It is important to the stylist in organizing the implements and tools prior to

perming by preparing the trolley. It is also important to familiarize the uses of
implements and tools or materials.

Sectioning or blocking and winding of hair is suitable for any hairstyle. The basic
section perm involves dividing the hair into nine neat sections in readiness for perm
winding. Winding a basic section perm helps you control longer hair length and work in
a methodical manner.

Sectioning the hair

The first step in perming is by dividing the hair into nine sections.
1. Make a diagram on the right to show the nine sections used for basic perm winding.
2. By using a tail comb, start winding in the nape area first, this area tends to be more
resistant.
3. The hairline at the front tends to react quicker to the perm lotion so this section
should be wound last.

Three different sectioning pattern

1. Six Section - The Six Sectioning pattern divides the head into six sections. Divide
the hair into two sections, front (4,6,5) and back (3,1,2). Divide the front section
just above the middle of the eyebrow, to give a middle (6) and two sides (4 &5).
● Nine section – first step in perming is dividing the hair into nine sections this
makes the hair tidier and easier to control. The diagram on the right shows
the nine sections used for basic perm winding. The numbering sequence
refers to the order in which the hair sections should be wound.
2. Brick winding - is when the perm curlers are positioned in a brickwork pattern. This
winding technique prevents any gaps in the hair, so you will not have any partings.
Brick winding is ideal for short fine hair and should be started at the front of the
head.
3. Directional winding - is when the hair is wound in a certain direction. It will help
create a flow in the direction the client wants. It is perfect for clients who want a
parting.
Winding Techniques

1. After placing the hair into the required sectioning you will need to wind the hair.
2. Hair should be kept damp.
3. Take a small sub-section of hair, smaller length and thickness of a curler.
4. The width of the section should be inside the width of the curler.
5. Comb the hair upwards, this will cause root lift.
6. Hold hair evenly and tight.
7. The curler should be at 90 degrees angle from the head shape.
8. Put an end paper on the ends of the hair; if you don't the ends will look frizzy at
the end of the perm.
9. The end paper helps make the winding process easier.
Jcantara Page 5
ILOILO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Luna Street, La Paz, Iloilo City
(for INHS classroom use only SY 2022-23) TLE – Hairdressing 10

10. Wind the hair down slowly, keeping the hair evenly tight.
11. Guide the hair ends round the curler with a tail comb. If the ends do not go
under the curler. The hair can become "fish-hooked" and frizzy.
12. Keep the curler level.
13. The curler should be in the center of the sub-section.
14. Secure the curler by fastening the rubber bond or clip.
15. The curler should sit on its base and not obstruct the next curler's positioning.
16. There should be no gaps between the curlers.
If using a band rubber, be careful of placing it too close to the root area, as this
can cause a rubber mark on the hair.
Perms often have a notorious reputation. There are plenty of safety concerns
regarding perms that you need to understand before your next visit to a salon or
purchasing a home kit. The most important area to consider before getting a perm is
the level of dryness it can create on your scalp, the type of hair loss it might cause, the
types of harmful chemicals are used and the hassles of maintenance.
1. Dryness - One way to avoid certain levels of dry scalp is to line your scalp, before
applying the perm solution, with either Vaseline or a thick, non- scented body
lotion coated in aloe Vera.
2. Hair loss - Perms, often when self-applied or done improperly, can cause hair
loss. Often, if hair has breakage and dries out, it can take six months to a year
for a full head of healthy hair to grow back

Harmful chemicals - Most chemicals need to be set at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, so

chemicals in the perm solution are extremely toxic and can burn the scalp line easily. If
you feel burning along your scalp line or if you see pink or red patches of inflamed
scalp, immediately rinse.
Safety precaution to use when perming a client's hair?
-Dilute the chemicals to half strength
-Use all chemicals within 6 months of opening them
-Wait three weeks before re-perming a client who has had an allergic reaction
-Read and follow all product directions carefully

The popularity of permanent waving changes year to year. However, as a

stylist, you may be asked to perform this task. In order to accomplish this goal, you will
need to understand how to create the best results depending on hair type, history and
what your guest desires as an end result.

The chemical treatments used in permanent perming or waving:

1. Acid - Balance Perms have activators and generally rely on heat to open up
cuticle scales so that they can penetrate the cortex, except when using an acid
perm on bleached hair, as the cuticle is already damaged.
2. Alkaline Perms – The main active ingredient or reducing agent in alkaline perms
is ammonium thioglycolate. It is a chemical compound that is made of
ammonium and thioglycolic acid.
3. Neutralizers – for both acid-balance and alkaline perms have the same important
function. To establish permanently the new curl shape. It is a significant step in
the perming process.

For non- Chemicals used in hair perming, where the result of perm or waving is not
permanent.

Examples:
Electric curling rod, electric flat iron, hair curlers, Chopsticks, Hair clamp, Cassava Stalk.
Coconut midribs, rubber bands, Hair spray, gel, egg white

SCALP AND HAIR ANALYSIS

A very important step before giving a cold perm is to make a careful
and correct analysis of the patron’s scalp and hair condition.

SCALP EXAMINATION
The scalp should be examined very carefully. Abrasions on the scalp can make cold
perming dangerous to a patron. An irritated scalp or badly damaged hair are both signs
that cold perming should be postponed until the condition is corrected.

HAIR POROSITY
Porosity is the ability of the hair to absorb fluids or liquids. The porosity of the hair
determines how quickly the perm lotion is absorbed. The processing time for any cold
perm depends much more on hair porosity than upon any other factor.

HAIR TEXTURE
Hair texture refers to the individual size of the hair strand and its degree of coarseness
or fineness. The texture and porosity are judged together in determining the processing
time.
Jcantara Page 11
ILOILO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Luna Street, La Paz, Iloilo City
(for INHS classroom use only SY 2022-23) TLE – Hairdressing 10

HAIR ELASTICITY
Hair elasticity is the ability of the hair to stretch and contract.
Without elasticity, there will be no curl on the hair

RECONDITIONING TREATMENTS
Reconditioning treatments for previously treated hair must be determined. Dry, brittle
or damaged hair which was previously treated, should be given reconditioning
treatment prior to cold hair perming. Recent developments in conditioners have proven
to be beneficial to the
hair. Avoid any treatment requiring massage or heat just prior to a cold wave. Such
treatment would create a sensitive scalp.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
These precautionary measures should be observed if previous treatments are applied
on the hair prior to cold wave:
1. Always use a pre-perm conditioner.
2. Use a mild shampoo before perming.
3. Use a mild cold wave lotion.
4. Make a test as often as necessary.
5. There is no room for error. Frequent checking is very important.
6. All color treated hair will have a degree of discoloration after perm.

Before performing a chemical service to the client, it is vital to analyze the

scalp if it has bruises, scratches, cuts, or open sores. The service should not be
continued if there are any signs of scalp diseases or abrasions.
Contraindication:
2 Perming lotion can be painful if the client's scalp has disorders.
3 It can also irritate sensitive or allergic skin.
4 Ask the client if he/she had any contraindication before carrying out the service.
5 Record your client responses during consultation.
6 Ask the client about the contraindication for you to have proof that she was
interviewed before treatment in case there is any problem occurring during or after
perm.
7 It is vital to keep a record card for every client for future references.

Table of contraindications and how to detect their presence

Hair perming adverse scalp and health conditions that might affect the condition
of scalp and hair. The following considerations that might affect the condition of scalp
and hair, the temperature, direction, hair condition, hair texture, hair density, hair
porosity, hair elasticity, hair length and growth pattern.
The following consideration that affect the condition of scalp and hair:
Temperature Affect the speed of the development of the perm. If the room is cold
it will slow down the development of perm, but if the salon is hot
this will speed development of perm.
Direction, It will determine the choice of winding technique, the size and type
degree, extent of rod used and type of perm solution.
of movement

Hair condition The condition will affect the choice of perm rod, solution and time
development
Hair texture The hair texture should be determined to assist the choice of rod
size and perm solution. Fine hair is more fragile and easier to
process. Coarse hair can prove to be more resistant which would
necessitate the use of stronger perm solution.
Hair density If the hair is particularly thick and dense, it will affect the time taken
to wind the hair and the amount of product used.
Hair porosity Test to assess the degree of the damage to the cuticle.
Hair elasticity The ability of the hair to stretch and return to its original form
without breaking. Normal elasticity-holds the curl from wet sets and
perming. Low elasticity- not able to hold the curl from wet sets and
perming.

Proper selection of perm rod is essential for successful permanent

waving. The size of the rod controls the shape of hair during the waving process. All
rods must have some means of securing the hair and the rod into desired position to
prevent the curl from unwinding.
Types of Rods
Straight- the circumference and diameter
of straight rods are the same for the
entire length. It creates a consistently
sized wave.

Concave – have a smaller diameter in the

center, which gradually increases to a
larger diameter at both ends.

How to position Perm Rod?

According to this system there are four types of hair: straight, wavy, curly, kinky.
Type 1 is straight hair, which reflects the most sheen and also the most resilient hair of

Jcantara Page 17
ILOILO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Luna Street, La Paz, Iloilo City
(for INHS classroom use only SY 2022-23) TLE – Hairdressing 10

all of the hair types. It is hard to damage and immensely difficult to curl this hair
texture.

Type 2 is wavy hair, whose texture and sheen ranges somewhere between
straight and curly hair. Wavy hair is also more likely to become frizzy than straight hair.

Textured hair is where strands create shape, like curves, spirals, zig zags or
waves; hair is kinky, coil curly or wavy. Knowing your hair's texture means you can
treat it correctly for its type and re-set your expectations of what can be achieved with
it
Acid perm lotion is gentler and has a pH value of approximately 6 to 7.
Alkaline perm lotions have a stronger pH value of approximately 9.5.

The ammonium thioglycolate can be more damaging if used on the wrong hair
texture. Alkaline perm lotions are best suited for normal or resistant hair types. The
type of perm chosen depends on the total hair evaluation and the client’s wishes.

The following is a general guide for choosing an alkaline or an acid-balanced perm.

3.5 Ensure client’s safety and comfort during the entire process.
Concepts:
End-papers are absorbent papers used to control the ends of the hair strand
when winding the hair on the perming rod. End papers should always extend beyond
the hair ends so hair can stick out and be misshapen during the curling process. The
hair within the end wrap should be combed smooth as possible to achieve the best
most beautiful curl.

Different End wrap techniques

1. Single flat wrap-uses only one end paper, placed over the top of the hair strands.

2. Double Flat Wrap-using two end wraps. One is placed on top, sandwiching the
strands between the two papers.

Jcantara Page 22
ILOILO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Luna Street, La Paz, Iloilo City
(for INHS classroom use only SY 2022-23) TLE – Hairdressing 10

3. Bookend wrap-uses one end paper folded in half over the hair ends like a book.

There are several ways in which a client may be draped for a permanent wave.
Comfort and adequate protection are important during the entire procedure.
Procedures in hair perming:
1. Divide the hair into nine sections.
2. Use the length of the tool to measure the width of the panels.
3. Remember to keep the hair wet as you wrap.
4. Begin wrapping at the front hairline or crown.
5. Make a horizontal parting the same size as the tool.
6. Use the two end papers, roll down to the scalp in the direction of the hair
growth and position of the tool half – off base.

Jcantara Page 23

(for INHS classroom use only SY 2022-23) TLE – Hairdressing 10

7. Continue wrapping the remainder of the first panel using the same technique.
8. Continue wrapping the remaining eight panels in numerical order, holding the
hair at 90-degree angle.

It is important to ensure clients safety and comfort during the entire process when
having services to the salon. You must take care of your client when gowning and
positioning him/her for a service.

1. Make sure the client’s gown is not too tight.

2. Always secure the towel with a clip so that it does not slide off of the client.
3. Remember to use disposable plastic cape on the top of the towel when
shampooing, for double protection.
4. Make sure that the client is positioned correctly at the basin so that he/she is
comfortable.
5. Do not be afraid to reposition the client. If he/she is not sitting correctly, you
cannot perform the treatment properly.
6. Try not to let the client sit up in the chair before you towel dry his/her hair.
Ensure client’s comfort:
7. Ask if the temperature is adequate.
8. Ask the client about their favorite scent and music preference.
9. Review the client’s home care routine.
10. Wash your hands/select your protection.
11. Listen to the client’s reason for visiting the spa.
12. Ask the client how their day is going
13. Explain the steps of your service.
14. Keep your conversation with the client.
15. Provide some quiet time.
16. Always keep your retail products on display.

a hair cosmetologist to understand the right shampoo to use for every type of hair. It is
important to rinse hair thoroughly, apply conditioner and rinse to make sure that leave
a little residue of conditioner and towel dry.
Procedure in shampooing and rinsing and towel dry hair:
1. Seat the client at the shampoo sink. Allow the client to sit comfortably in the chair.
2. Draw back of the cape over the outside of the shampoo chair to prevent water from
seeping down the client’s back.
3. Turn on the water spray and direct the nozzle in the client’s hair.
4. Wet the hair thoroughly by lifting portions of the hair with one hand to structure the
scalp with water.
5. Spread a small portion of shampoo around the hair and work into lather using the
cushions of the fingers.
6. Manipulate the scalp.

Processing and Timing the Perm

Timing of the molding stage, where the hair is softened around the permanent
wave rods, is essential. If the lotion is left too long, then the hair will become over
treated, frizzy and will break off.

Timing for Perm Winding Techniques

a. Pre-damping (applying perm lotion before perm rods) = 35 minutes

b. Post-damping (applying perm lotion after perm rods are wound)=45

minutes

Over-processed Perm

Over- processing can be identified with ease as it cannot keep a good even
wave movement due to the lack of elasticity. Once dried the hair feels harsh.
Recommended treatments include reconditioning treatments.

Under-processing is caused by insufficient processing time. Hair has weak wave

movements with unstructured ridges. Hair movement is usually lost after a few
shampoo washes.

Stages of perm Application

a. Protecting stage – This is where you apply barrier cream to protect the
scalp and hairline of the client from any possible skin irritation or burn
caused by the perm lotion.

b. Pre-damping stage – this stage involves the application of perm lotion to

the hair client before sectioning or winding the perm rods.

c. Post-damping technique – refers to the application of perm lotion to hair

that has been sectioned and wound around the perm rods.

d. Some curl friends like completely shaved sides while others prefer a little
texture and curl.

Jcantara Page 26
ILOILO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Luna Street, La Paz, Iloilo City
(for INHS classroom use only SY 2022-23) TLE – Hairdressing 10

e. The sides can be cut higher or lower around the temple/ears.

f. Depending on the amount and length of hair.

g. Styling options can include twists, twist outs, flexi rods, wash and go, finger
coils, braids, and much more.

h. Curl completely shaved the sides which refer to a little texture or curl.

Taper - to become smaller or thinner toward one end.

- gradual diminution of thickness, diameter, or width in an

elongated object.
Different Styles, Taper or Trim in hair perming:

1. Flexi Rods 6. Rock a coil out

2. Wash and go 7. Finger coil

3. Natural flexi 8. Twist out

4. Pin on short style 9. Braids

5. Tapered style 4c 10. Classic tapered

To confirm client’s satisfaction and make adjustments if required. It is important to

check the development test curl will be the desired result, this test has to be done
during the processing of the perm. Procedure to check:
1. Wear gloves and hold the perm rod.
2. Remove the rubber fastener.
3. Unwind rod for one half turns.
4. Slightly pull the hair and see if the hair will turn into an “S” shape.
5. When the “S” shape matches the size of the rod, the processing is complete.
6. Test other curls from different areas to check if you are satisfied with the result.

When not to perm and the client’s unsatisfied due to:

Hair perming is not advisable when the following condition is present:
1. Skin or scalp is damaged or broken.
2. The hair is in poor condition.
3. Overall porosity of the hair is too high-over bleached.
4. If there is the presence of metallic salts.
5. When the hair has poor elasticity.

Activity 6
Instruction: Please follow the format of your Answer Sheet used in week one.
I. Directions: Answer the following questions on your answer sheets.
1. When was the exact time of molding stage of hair perming?
2. What might happen if perm lotion is left too long in the hair?
3. What is the result of over-processed perm lotion in your hair?

Client aftercare advice is an important part of the services in a salon.
Reconditioning treatments have a place in the after care of a permanent wave and
between waves. The aftercare helps to keep the hair in the best possible condition. It
includes regular hair care.

1. Recommend the client to wash and shampoo their hair only after two to three
days.

2. Due to chemicals, chemically treated hair tends to dry, explaining to the client how
often they should return to the salon for treatment.

3. Inform the client that the hair can be permed once every 4 months.

4. Recommend the client to shampoo the hair as needed with mild shampoo and
rinse.

5. Advice the client to use an appropriate hair conditioner as directed by the

manufacturer.

suited to the hair. Remind the client to avoid excessive brushing or combing in the
opposite direction.
