What’s New

This course aims to develop the knowledge, values, skills and interest of the learners
about Nail Care. The concepts and skills that will be developed along the way can be of
great help to the learners because the learning that will take place during the course of the
study can help the learners to hone their talents and develop their skills in nail care services
into a profitable source of income.

What Is It

LET US STUDY!

It is a beauty care service where curative mineral is present for personal

beautification. If spa is applied to the feet, the patron can experience relaxation, pain is
relieved and blood circulation is stimulated due to the warm and enhancing effect of the
softening agents. It exfoliates dead skin cells and smoothens roughness, aiding the
penetration of treatment ingredients in the system.

Let Us Remember
- Analysis of the client’s foot condition will help you determine the cosmetics and/or service
that should or should not be applied.
- After analyzing the client’s nails and adjacent skin, a treatment plan should be considered
in order to correct any skin disorders.
- Maintain good personal communication and general hygiene. Wash your foot regularly and
clean implements thoroughly.

Here are the steps in handling foot spa:

1.1 Check and analyze condition of foot nails

Figure 1: Shows how to check and

analyse the clienteles’ foot nail
condition.

2
A. Trimming: Trimming is done by the following steps.
• Remove the nail polish (if any) from the toe nails of the client by using the nail polish
remover
• Cut the nails in the required nails
• In order to soften the cuticles, apply a cuticle cream
• Then, file the nails so as to get the shape you desire for

B. Foot Soak: Then begin the soaking of the foot. So this goes as below.
• In a medium size bath tub, put lukewarm water and add foot soak
• Next, in case you do not have a foot soak, you can add shampoo or vinegar to stir.
Stir it all well.
• Soak the feet on the tub or the foot bath and relax them for 10 minutes. You can
have reduced pain and inflammation. The water solution also helps in removing the
dirt and exfoliating the dead skin cells from the feet.
• Now, remove the feet from the water and dry it properly.

C. Exfoliation: Exfoliation is required in a foot spa which cleans the dead cells from the skin
on the feet. Follow the steps explained below.
• Using a pumice stone or foot file, exfoliate your heels, ankles, and side of the heel
gently.
• Again dip your other foot in to the warm water in the foot bath or the tub and repeat
the same procedures.
• Now, using a foot scrub massage gently for 5-8 minutes over the heels, ankles,
soles etc.
• Make sure you are gently scrubbing using circular motion over the feet

D. Moisturizing and massaging: Moisturizing the foot is essential once the exfoliation is
completed. So remove the feet from the tub or the foot bath and properly wipe them
off with a towel.
• Using a foot moisturizing cream, massage the feet gently for 5-10 minutes.

For Feet:

A. Check if it is Normal

3
Healthy toenails should generally be a pink color - with the healthy nail plate being
pink, and the nail being white in color as it grows off the nail bed.

B. Check if it is Dry
Dry feet are typically scaly and rough to the touch.

C. Check if it is with abrasions or cuts

An abrasion is a type of open wound that's caused by the skin rubbing against a
rough surface. Abrasions are very common injuries.

D. Check if it is with fungal infection or wounds

Fungal infection that usually begins between the toes. It commonly occurs in people
whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tightfitting shoes. Signs and
symptoms include a scaly rash that usually causes itching, stinging and burning.

E. Check if it is with open wound

Wound is an injury to living tissue caused by a cut, blow, or other impact, typically
one in which the skin is cut or broken.

1.2 Ensure client’s safety and comfort prior to foot spa activity

When establishing relationships with your clients, it is important that they feel
comfortable prior to receiving a treatment. In order to make a lasting impression, there are
many things to take into account that will benefit, or hinder, the client’s overall experience.
The client’s comfort level may be the determining factor in whether or not they return to your
spa to receive another treatment. From spa cleanliness to listening and achieving the client’s
wants and needs. Place client’s feet on a clean towel on footrest to prevent stains.

Here are just a few of the things in place to help facilitate client safety:

1. Individualized Service plan and assessment process that identifies and addresses specific
safety needs. Annual Service planning meetings to revisit needs that may have changed.

2. A comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control program that includes hand washing
protocols, housekeeping procedures, and monitoring infection rates.

3. A Medication Administration system including staff training and education, and

identification systems to ensure that the right person receives the right medication and the
right dose at the right time.

4. An Emergency Preparedness and Response system which includes a written agency

plan and practice drills to train staff and test the plan’s effectiveness.

Figure 6: Place client’s feet

on a clean towel

1.3 Wash feet with warm water and soap before and after scrubbing

5
Unclean feet can be a health danger resulting in dermatitis, fungal infections such as
athlete's foot, foot odor, yellow or ingrown toenails, or infection of cuts and sores. Although
your feet may not look particularly dirty, it is recommended that you wash your feet daily.
Keeping your feet clean and dry is an effective way to prevent these health issues.

Figure 7: Wash feet with warm water Figure 8: Wash feet with soap

1.4 Towel dry feet and apply with appropriate lotion.

After washing, dry your feet thoroughly to prevent fungal infections like athlete's foot.  Use
lotion on your feet to prevent cracking; don't put the lotion between your toes, since moisture
here can increase the risk of fungal infection. By applying lotion, the removal of the hardened
paraffin becomes easier.

Figure 9: Dry the feet with towel Figure 10: Put lotion on the feet

1.5 Prepare and use necessary tools and supplies/materials according to OHSC
requirements.

The tools commonly used in giving foot spa are the following:

1. Foot Spa Machine – is an electronic gadget used for soaking, bathing

and massaging the feet during a foot spa.

2. Foot File - is made of metal or sandpaper, with a rough file on one side to
remove calluses and a fine file on the other to smoothen the
feet.

6
3. Foot Stool - is a simple seat with three or four legs designed to provide
comfort and elevation during a foot spa.

4. Pumice Stone - is a type of volcanic rock, which is actually frothy lava

solidified to form a porous rock to remove dry and
annoying skin of the feet as well as calluses.

5. Rough Gloves - is a garment covering for the whole hand.

6. Brush - use to spread the henna

7. Hydrogen Peroxide- use to dilute henna powder

on the hands, cuticles, and feet because it's colorless,
tasteless, and odorless.

7
2. Disposable Foot Glove - It is a single use can be worn under foot spa
treatment.

3. Foot Mitten- is a common term now used for socks

4. Moisturizing Lotion - is any of various cosmetic preparations that are

applied to soften the skin.

5. Antiseptics - is an agent that reduces or prevents the multiplication of

microorganisms.

6. Foot Soak - is an herbal blend to relax, energize, soothe and deodorize

the

10. Warm Water - water that is supplied through a mixing valve or

combination faucet at a temperature of at least 100°F.

11. Henna Powder - used for whitening the skin

1.6 Determine and test appropriate temperature for heat tolerance of client.

The following steps are to be followed when testing paraffin wax temperature.

1. Wax must be in an ideal consistency and temperature when it resembles honey and
glides easily over your skin. After heating your wax, test it on the inside of your wrist
before use.

8
2. Test the wax with your fingertip to make sure it's the right temperature. If not, adjust
the temperature.

3. The wax should not be uncomfortably hot on your skin.

4. If it feels too hot, leave it cool for a couple of minutes and test again on your wrist.

5. If wax is not spreading easily and has a stringy texture, it is too cool and will need a bit
more heating time.

1.7 Soak foot for 4 seconds for 3 consecutive times in wax and wrap with plastic
gloves and mittens.

Pictures below show how to soak feet in a wax using the different supplies/materials.

Figure 11: Soak foot in wax Figure 12: Wrap foot with Figure 13: Wrap foot with
plastic gloves mittens
1.8 Remove wax from foot
according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Remove the wax

After 15 to 20 minutes, remove your foot from the mittens and the plastic gloves. Use
soft tissue to remove the wax residue from your skin. Remove slowly to prevent injury. When
you’ve completed your treatment, cover the wax and store it in a safe place for your next
treatment.

Lesson Perform Post Foot Spa Activity

2
What I Need to Know

2. Perform post foot spa activity (TLE_HEBC9- 12FS-IIh-j-4)

2.1 Dispose waste products including used wax according to OHSC and Department
of Health requirements.
2.2 Sanitize and store tools and equipment.
2.3 Clean and sanitize work station for the next treatment activity.

What’s In

13
In the previous lesson, you have learned on how to apply foot spa treatment in Ten
(10) steps. You also learned what the tools; equipment, supplies and materials have
been used.

In this lesson, you will be able to know how to dispose waste products including used
wax, sanitize and store tools and equipment, clean and sanitize work station for the next
treatment activity.

What’s New

This lesson covers the knowledge, skills and attitude in performing spa for the
foot. It also involves preparing the client, application of foot spa products and performing
post foot spa activities. It also deals with the proper disposal of wastes, sanitation and store
of tools equipment.

What Is It

LET US STUDY!

When carrying out of foot spa it is essential that the client knows how to take care of
her hands, feet and nails at home. It is your duty as an operator to ensure that correct
aftercare advice is given.

Aftercare, advice differs slightly for each client, according to individual needs. Keep a
record of your client’s visits and the service given to her/him for future reference.

The salon should always appear neat, tidy and safe. The waiting area should be
clean and well taken care of. The treatment area should be sanitized and operators should
clean it as they go.

2.1 Dispose waste of products including used wax according to OHSC and
Department of Health requirements.

14
The most important first step beauty store or salon owners should take is making sure a
waste management compliance program is set in place. There are several best practices for
bagging, segregating and storing hazardous waste items that will help ensure the safety and
compliance of your program.

Chemical Waste – Chemical waste consists of discarded solid, liquid, and gaseous
chemicals, for example from diagnostic and experimental work and from cleaning,
housekeeping, and disinfecting procedures. Chemical waste from health care may be
hazardous or non-hazardous.

https://www.doh.gov.ph/sites/default/files/publications/Health_Care_Waste_Management_Manual
Figure 20: Proper Disposal in Chemical Waste
Here also some other ways in disposing waste products:

 Properly seal items. Prior to storing any hazardous waste items in a bin, place them
individually in a sealed plastic bag. This will keep items from mixing and causing a
reaction.

 Use separate bins. Incompatible hazardous waste items must remain separate.

 Label containers properly. Once the initial item is placed within a bin, label the
container as hazardous waste and also include the accumulation start date.

 Scout a safe storage area. Store accumulation bins in a dedicated, permanent, clean
and neatly organized hazardous waste area.

 Once items are stored properly, hazardous waste disposal should be done in
accordance with the local regulations. Small businesses can dispose of accumulated
wastes on hazardous waste collection days.

15
2.2 Sanitize and store tools and equipment.

All non- disposable instruments used in the service must be sterilized and placed
inside the cabinet sanitizer. All disposable items should be immediately discarded and new
ones are taken out for the next treatment.

Figure 21: Sanitizer and sterilized

equipment

2.3 Clean and sanitize work station for the next treatment activity.

Keeping your salon clean is an essential part of forming a good relationship with your
clients. Maintaining high standards of hygiene in your salon is vital to prevent the risks of
cross contamination. Whether it's from yourself, other clients or dirty tools, fungi, viruses,
parasites and bacteria can easily spread if you don't do your bit to put a stop to them. This
means you can maintain a high level of cleanliness in your salon and keep your customers
reassured that they are in a quality establishment.

Figure 22: Sanitizing the table using spray Figure 23: Sanitizing the area

Let Us Remember

- Always sanitize tools and instruments

- Dispose wastes materials following environmental rules and regulations.
