Lesson Prepare Client
1
What I Need to Know

Prepare client (TLE_HEHD9-12CB-Ig-j-5)

1.1 Consult client on health condition and previous hair chemical treatment
availed
1.2 Advise client on possible service options and outcome results
1.3 Check and analyze conditions of the hair and scalp
1.4 Advise client to remove all personal accessories
1.5 Provide client with protective clothing and gadgets following salon
procedures

What’s In

After dealing with the fundamentals in hair coloring, as well as preparing the client
and applying hair color in the previous module, you are now ready to know how to prepare a
client, bleach hair, and perform post-service activities in hair bleaching.

What’s New

Hair bleaching is a chemical hair dye technique that can create wide range of color of
the natural hair strands. Same with haircoloring, hair bleaching is popular with teenagers
nowadays. Clients go to salons to bleach their hair just to follow popular trends online. But
despite of its popularity, hair bleach can destroy hair strands if it’s not applied properly. With
this lesson, you will know the ways on how to perform hair bleaching efficiently.

What Is It
To ensure successful results when performing hair bleaching services, the colorist
must follow the steps in how to prepare client. This is to ensure that clients are comfortable

iv
with the service you will provide for them. Unlike haircoloring, hair bleaching takes serious
effort to achieve the desired results satisfying them is one of the most important factors that
you will consider to attract more customers.

Lesson 1.1: Consult client on health condition and previous hair

chemical treatment availed

Figure 1: Shows how to consult a client

1. Before the hair bleaching procedure, you hair bleaching procedure, remind the client
to not wash their hair the day or night before his appointment so that the scalp will
not be irritated.
2. If hair is previously colored or highlighted with bleach, the client must make sure to
do a deep treatment at least a week before the procedure to provide some protection
to the hair strands during the bleaching process.
3. Ask client about their hair history. Previous hair chemical treatments may affect the
hair bleaching procedure.

Lesson 1.2: Advise client on possible service options and outcome

results

Figure 2: Shows the outcome results of client’s preferences

1. Look at the client directly. Do not look at her through the mirror. Ask what she is
thinking about doing with her hair color. Ask leading questions. Let her talk. Keep her
on track by discussing the recent history of her hair (over the past six months). Your
questions might include the following:
• Are you looking for a temporary or permanent change?

v
• Do you want color all over or just a few highlights?
• Do you see yourself with a more conservative or dramatic type of color?
• Have you seen so-and-so’s (e.g., a TV celebrity) hair? That color would look
great on you.

2. Recommend at least two different haircolor options. Show pictures of different ranges
of colors, from brunette to blond, red, and highlighted colors. Review the procedure
and application technique, cost of the service, and follow-up maintenance.
Sometimes several steps may be necessary to obtain a haircolor result. A client may
love a certain haircolor, but may not be able to afford the service. Have a more
economical backup solution ready.

3. Be honest and do not promise more than you can deliver. If you are faced with a
corrective situation, let the client know what you can accomplish today and how
many more visits it will take to achieve the final results that she wants.

4. Gain approval from the client.

Lesson 1.3: Check and analyze conditions of the hair and scalp

Figure 3: Shows the colorist as she analyze the conditions and scalp of the client

Analyze the hair and scalp for porosity, elasticity, texture, density, length and scalp
conditions. Make sure the scalp is scratch free and in healthy condition. Analyze the existing
base shade, both the natural and artificial, if any, and the reflect colour. Remember that
artificial colour is usually harder to lighten than natural colour, especially if it’s been in the
hair a long time or there have been repeated applications. You will need to consider which
product or combination of products and developer strengths to use to ensure an even color
result.

vi
Lesson 1.4: Advise client to remove all personal accessories
Do not let the client wear any jewelry during the bleaching process. Jewelry can collect
the bleach dust causing skin irritations.

Lesson 1.5: Provide client with protective clothing and gadgets

following salon procedures
Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) must be provided for you and the client to
protect the clothes and skin from the product being used. The Client must wear:
 A gown
 A towel
 A colouring cape (long hair)
 Barrier cream.

Figure 4: Shows sample of a Barrier Cream

Figure 5: Shows the gown and towel of a client

What’s More

Research more about the possible questions you can ask to your clients
about their preferences in hair bleaching. List at least 10 in a short bond paper.

vii
What I Have Learned
Essay Test. Direction: Read and answer the following questions. Explain
your answer in 3-5 sentences. You can use a separate sheet of paper to write your
answer.

1. Why is it important to consult client on health condition and previous hair chemical
treatment availed?

2. Enumerate the factors you should consider in analysing hair and scalp of our client.

3. List the protective clothing to protect client in the procedure.

2.1 Prepare and use supplies, materials, tools, equipment, and implements according
to OH&S requirements
2.2 Mix bleaching product with right volume of developer according to manufacturers’
instructions and client’s hair texture
2.3 Perform hair bleaching according to established or acceptable procedures and
product specifications
2.4 Ensure clients’ safety and comfort during the process

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you are able to know how to consult client on health
condition and previous hair chemical treatment availed, advice client on possible service
options and outcome results, check and analyze conditions of the hair and scalp, advice
client to remove all personal accessories, and to provide client with protective clothing and
gadgets following salon procedures. In this lesson, you will be able to know the proper ways
in bleaching hair.

What’s New

This lesson deals with the correct application of a bleaching products/lighteners on

hair. This also includes the safety standards of colorist as well as the client in the bleaching
procedure. This will also discuss the safety and health precautions of the colorist as well as
the client in hair bleaching.

xi
What Is It

Definition of Terms:

Developer/Peroxide – When mixed with the powder, this liquid activates the bleach.
It comes in a variety of volumes, ranging from Vol. 10 to Vol.
40. Vol. 10 is the weakest and Vol. 40 is the strongest.
Darker hair requires stronger peroxide.

Service Record Card- this includes the client’s information you gathered as well as
the changes and amendments that the client chooses in hair
bleaching services.

Toners- used primarily on pre-lightened hair to achieve pale, delicate colors.

Remember: Before the bleaching procedure, perform the following tests.

Patch Test
A patch test, also known as predisposition test, is a test for identifying a possible
allergy in a client. A negative skin test will show no sign of inflammation and indicates that
the color may be safely applied. A positive result will show redness and a slight rash or welt.
A client with these symptoms is allergic, and under no circumstances should she receive a
haircolor service with the haircolor tested.

Preliminary Strand Test

Once you have created a color formula for your client, try it out first on a small strand
of hair. This preliminary strand test determines how the hair will react to the color formula
and how long the formula should be left on the hair. The strand test is performed after the
client is prepared for the coloring service.

Lesson 2.2: Examining Scalp and Hair
In the previous chapter, you already know that all successful salon services must
begin with a thorough analysis of the condition of the client’s scalp and client’s hair type.
Knowing the client’s scalp condition and the client’s hair type allows you to prepare and
make decisions about the results that can be expected from the service.
Also, the four most important factors to consider in hair analysis are texture, density,
porosity, and elasticity. Other factors that you should also be aware of are growth pattern
and dryness versus oiliness. These factors will guide you to be able to perform bleaching
services successfully.

Lesson 2.3: Perform hair bleaching according to established or

acceptable procedures and product specifications

Strand Test Procedure

Implements and Materials
You will need all of the following implements, materials, and supplies:

• Applicator bottle • Selected hair product

• Chemical cape • Service record card
• Color brushes • Shampoo
• Developer • Sheet of foil or plastic wrap
• Glass or plastic mixing bowl • Spray bottle containing water
• Protective gloves • Towels

Procedure:
1. Perform a scalp and hair analysis.
2. Drape client to protect skin and clothing.
3. Part off a ½-inch (1.25 centimeters) square section of hair in the lower crown. Using
plastic clips, fasten other hair out of the way.
4. Place the hair strand over the foil or plastic wrap and apply the mixture.

Figure 9: Shows hair strand wrapped in foil

xv
5. Follow the application method for the bleach you will be using to apply the mixture.

Figure 10: Shows the application of hair bleach in hair strand

6. Check the development at five-minute intervals until the desired color has been
achieved. Note the timing on the service record card.

Figure 11: Shows the development of the desired color in hair strand

7. When satisfactory color has developed, remove the protective foil or plastic wrap.
Place a towel under the strand, mist it thoroughly with water, add shampoo, and
massage through. Rinse by spraying with water. Dry the hair strand with the towel
and observe the results.

Figure 12: Shows the removal of hair bleach

8. Adjust the formula, timing, or application method as necessary and proceed with the
color service.
Using Lighteners

xvi
Hair Bleaching Procedure

1. Drape the client for a hair bleaching service.

Figure 13: Shows the client’s hair before the treatment

2. Put on gloves.
3. Part the hair into four sections.
4. Apply a protective cream around the hairline and over the ears.
5. Prepare the lightening formula and use it immediately.
6. Place cotton around and through all four sections to protect the scalp so the lightener does not
contact the scalp.

Figure 14: Shows the cotton placed on the scalp for protection

7. Apply the lightener ½-inch away from the scalp, working the lightener through the mid-strand
and up to the porous ends.

Figure 15: Shows the application of lightener

8. Place strips of cotton at the scalp area along the partings to prevent the lightener from
touching the base of the hair, and complete all four sections in this manner.

Figure 16: Shows the strips of cotton placed at the scalp area

xvii
9. Continue to apply the lightener. Double check the application, adding more lightener if
necessary. Do not comb the lightener through the hair. Keep the lightener moist during
development by reapplying if the mixture dries on the hair.

10. Check for lightening action about fifteen minutes before the time indicated by the preliminary
strand test. Spray a hair strand with a water bottle and remove the lightener with a damp
towel. Examine the strand. If the strand is not light enough, reapply the mixture and continue
testing frequently until the desired level is reached.

Figure 17: Shows the lightening action of the mixture

11. Remove the cotton from the scalp area. Apply the lightener to the hair near the scalp with ½-
inch (1.25 centimeters) partings. Apply lightener to the porous ends and process until the
entire hair strand has reached the desired stage.

Figure 18: Shows the removal of cotton from the scalp area

12. Rinse the hair thoroughly with warm water. Shampoo gently and condition as needed,
keeping your hands under the hair to avoid tangling.
13. Neutralize the alkalinity of the hair with an acidic conditioner. Recondition if necessary.
14. Towel dry the hair, or dry it completely under a cool dryer if required by the manufacturer.
15. Examine the scalp for any abrasions. Analyze the condition of the hair.
16. Proceed with a toner application if desired.
17. If no toner is needed, dry and style the hair.

Toner Application

Implements and Materials

Lesson 2.4: Ensure clients’ safety and comfort during the process

Healthy and safe precautions

 Perform a patch test twenty-four to forty-eight hours prior to each application of
aniline-derivative hair bleach. Apply hair bleach only if the patch test is negative.
 Do not apply hair bleach if abrasions are present on the scalp.
 Do not apply hair bleach if a metallic or compound haircolor is present.
 Do not brush the hair prior to applying bleach.
 Always read and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
 Use cleaned and disinfected applicator bottles, brushes, combs, and towels.
 Protect your client’s clothing with proper draping.
 Perform a strand test for color, breakage, and/or discoloration.
 Use an applicator bottle or bowl (glass or plastic) for mixing the hair bleach and the
developer.

xx
 Do not mix hair bleach until you are ready to use it; discard leftover hair bleach.
 Wear gloves to protect your hands.
 Do not permit the bleach to come in contact with the client’s eyes.
 Do not overlap during a hair bleach retouch.
 Use a mild shampoo. An alkaline or harsh shampoo will strip color.

What’s More

Apply your skill by performing a strand test procedure. Choose one family
member. Follow the procedure and take pictures while performing the activity. Then
mount your picture in your portfolio. Label it well and be creative. Send pictures
regarding your activity to your teacher through a messenger or email that your

Lesson Perform Post-service Activities
3
What I Need to Know

Perform post-service activities (TLE_HEHD9-12CB-Ig-j-7)

3.1 Advise client on hair care and maintenance
3.2 Sanitize and store tools and equipment and implements after use according to
salon procedures
3.3 Dispose wastes of according to OH&S requirements
3.4 Clean and prepare workstation for next activity

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you are able to know how to prepare and use supplies,
materials, tools, equipment, and implements according to OH&S requirements, mix
bleaching product with right volume of developer according to manufacturers’ instructions
and client’s hair texture, perform hair bleaching according to established or acceptable
procedures and product specifications, and ensure clients’ safety and comfort during the
process. In this lesson, you will be able to know how to perform after service activities in hair
bleaching.

What’s New

One of the most important way to maintain the beauty of hair after bleaching is to
perform a post-service activity to your client. Other than that, to promote proper sanitization,
tools and equipment should be properly kept after performing the service. Cleanliness as
well as disposing wastes in the workstation is also vital to ensure that clients are
comfortable.

25
What Is It

Lesson 3.1: Advice client on hair care and maintenance

These are the following tips you can advise to your clients:

1. Keep hair washing to a minimum.

Undoubtedly the fastest way to fade out that hard-earned color, washing also strips
hair of the essential moisture it so requires after all that damage. This can be attributed to
sulfates most commonly found in shampoos, which tend to dry out hair further.

2. Use color-preserving shampoos when washing hair.

Unfortunately, normal shampoos just don't cut it. A color-preserving variant, on the
other hand, comes formulated with ingredients that help extend the life of your new hair hue.
It also ensures that hair doesn't turn brassy or fade into an entirely different shade (blues
tend to wash out to green, for instance).

3. Say no to heat styling unless absolutely necessary.
Hair is already dry and vulnerable post-bleach, so heat stylers such straighteners,
curlers and even dryers only serve to aggravate compromised strands. Avoid if possible, or,
failing that, make sure to at least spritz heat protectant prior.

4. Do not brush hair when wet.

Combing sopping wet locks with a brush will all but ensure breakage. Wait patiently
for it to air dry.

5. Swap out your cotton towel for a microfiber one.

Microfiber towels are ultra-soft and absorbent, allowing for strands to maintain their
natural texture without any further frizzing or damage. Make sure to use squeezing and
scrunching motions rather than, uh, any violent rubbing.

26
Lesson 3.2: Sanitize and store tools and equipment and
implements after use according to salon
procedures
Combs and Hair Brushes: Are they disinfected before use?
Dandruff travels fast, and lice, even faster. An itchy scalp is another common complaint. In
most beauty parlors and salons, hairdressers rarely pause to disinfect their brushes, combs,
and even scissors before starting work on the next client. Ensure that the comb used for
your haircut or styling comes straight out of the sterilizer and not the stylist’s pouch holster.

Towels and Other Garments: Are they washed regularly?

If it’s not spotless don’t use it.

Lesson 3.3: Dispose wastes of according to OH&S requirements

Products: Are still they usable?
Using expired products can lead to reactions in your hair and skin, especially facial
products. Always make sure that the product being used is not close to its expiry date,
instead of prematurely writing it off to whether it suited you or not.

Single-Use Products
Products like gloves used only once. The products are taken out of their packaging in
front of the customer and used entirely in one session.

Lesson 3.4: Clean and prepare workstation for next activity

Salon floors and furnishing: Are they clean?

Has the floor been swept after the procedure? Have the counters been cleaned, Are
the beds in the cabins spotless? Pristine floors, clean counters, and spotless beds and
chairs are telltale signs of a well-managed salon that gives its customers a stellar service.

What’s More

Research more about some advices or tips to your clients in hair care and
maintenance. List at least five (5) and put your answer in a short bond paper.

Summary

Hair bleaching is a chemical hair dye technique that can create wide range of color of
the natural hair strands. Same with haircoloring, hair bleaching is popular with
teenagers nowadays. Clients go to salons to bleach their hair just to follow popular
trends online. But despite of its popularity, hair bleach can destroy hair strands if it’s
not applied properly. With this lesson, you will know the ways on how to perform hair
bleaching efficiently.

Developer/Peroxide – When mixed with the powder, this liquid activates the bleach.
It comes in a variety of volumes, ranging from Vol. 10 to Vol. 40. Vol. 10 is the
weakest and Vol. 40 is the strongest. Darker hair requires stronger peroxide.

Service Record Card- this includes the client’s information you gathered as well as
the changes and amendments that the client chooses in hair bleaching services.

Toners- used primarily on pre-lightened hair to achieve pale, delicate colors.

Perform a patch test twenty-four to forty-eight hours prior to each application of

aniline-derivative hair color. Apply hair color only if the patch test is negative.

Always read and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Perform a strand test for color, breakage, and/or discoloration.
