Module 1 I Show Concern for Others at All Times
One of the original uses of the word “concerned” is the Greek verse, Katanoein, which means “to scrutinize, to
be attentive, and to observe. The verb tells us to be concerned for one another means, not remaining isolated and
indifferent to others but to be involved and participating in the lives of others.
There is a great difference between being worried and being concerned. A worried person sees a problem and yet
does not intend to get involved, while a concerned person examines the situation and is moved and challenged to do
something about it, usually by solving the problem. “Concern” happens when we begin to feel the need to do something
about the situation because we can relate to the issue at hand, and this invites our focus and catches our attention. We
feel concerned about something not only because it means something to us, but it has some importance in our lives. The
concern is typically always felt for our family, friends, and those close to us. We are always concerned about those to
whom we are attached or related. In the word of Pythagoras, “Concern should drive us into action and not into a
depression.” Thus, the concern should not be taken as a form of anxiety.
When we show concern for others, we are enforcing a basic truth about people, that everyone is inherently good.
Here are some ways that concern is exercised:
1. greeting people warmly with a smile 5. listening to their wishes, dreams, and plans
2. helping people in times of need 6. encouraging people to go on despite the difficulties
3. giving allowances to others’ mistakes 7. making them feel that they are important in our lives
4. guiding others to make the right decisions 8. understanding and appreciating their activities and behavior
To be concerned to others further means to be “guardians” of others. Being concerned means developing
relationships based on mutual acceptance and appreciation of one’s well-being and the well-being of others. We need to
acknowledge our responsibility towards everyone. Responsibility towards others thus means desiring and working for
the good of others, in the hope that they too will become receptive to goodness and its demands. By developing this way
of “seeing others” there will be greater solidarity, justice, mercy, and compassion in the world.
