tense and past perfect tense.
b. revise sentences following the appropriate usage of
tenses of verbs in a given learning exercise.
c. produce a story ending with proper usage of past and past
perfect tenses in the paragraph.

Past Tense - Verbs that end with “d” and


“ed” letters
Past perfect tense - past tense of a verb
with a past participle “had”

What is the
difference
between past
tense and past
perfect tense?

PAST TENSE- is used to


talk about actions that
happened at a specific
time in the past.

These can be in terms of:

events in the situation in the a series of


past that are past actions in the
now finished past

PAST TENSE - is form by adding /-d/ or /-ed/ to the base form of the verb.

Regular verbs - add -ed to the root form of the verb (or just -d if the root
form already ends in an e)

EXAMPLES

play→ played love → loved


push → pushed listen → listened

type → typed dump → dumped

Irregular verbs – the simple past tense of some irregular verbs
looks exactly like the root form.

EXAMPLES

put → put set→ set


cut → cut cost → cost
hit → hit

Other irregular verbs, including the verb to be, the simple past
forms are more erratic.

EXAMPLES

see → saw
build → built
go → went
do → did
rise → rose
am/is/are → was/were

Verbs in the simple past tense (except


for the verb to be) don’t need to agree
in number with their subjects.
Example:
Wolfgang polished his medal. The
other winners polished their medals
too.

PAST PERFECT TENSE - is
used when you are talking
about a completed action
before something in the
past.

PAST PERFECT TENSE is form by using the word “had”+ past
participle of the verb. It expresses activities that existed or
occurred before another activity in the past.

EXAMPLES

We had finished dinner when James


called.

up to then, before that day

story with your own ending in mind. You have to make
sure you apply appropriate past and past perfect
tense and underline it in your sentences. You will have
