INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

One of the most common problem in the Barangay Dumayco is the

LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL
Peñarrubia, Abra

improper waste disposal, which could affect the current living of the

residents of the barangay. The type of research approach is a qualitative

research. In this study the researchers aim to create a solution for the

main problem that the researchers found out by interviewing the residents.

The Theory on Waste Management (2004) by E. Pongrácz, P. S. Phillips, and

R. L. Keiski is used as a reference through the progression of the study. An

interview was conducted with (9) willingly residents of the chosen

community, barangay dumayco. The question asked to the respondents was

their basic information, source of income and the problems that they

encountered in the community. According to the result, improper waste

disposal is the major problem of the residents in barangay Dumayco. These

problems were defined as incinerating, throwing their garbage on the

well and the lack of garbage collection. These problems could harm not only

the residents but also the environment itself. The knowledge of the residents

about their current situation is based on their own experiences. Although

they were able to give advice to people that might experience the same

situation by segregating their waste properly but since they don’t have

enough funds to support garbage truck collection they resulted to the

incinerating of their garbage’s. Implementing ecological solid waste

management was no easy task, but the barangays partnered with Mother

Earth Foundation (MEF) in implementing the law. With MEF training and

guidance, barangays established MRFs and strictly enforced ‘no segregation,

no collection’ policy. They tapped waste pickers to conduct door-to-door

segregated collection from every household, and also encouraged residents

LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL
Peñarrubia, Abra

to compost their biodegradable waste. These strategies combined resulted in

significant reduction of garbage ending in landfills or dumpsites. In the first

year of implementation, for example, Barangay Dumayco diverted 80% of

its solid waste from landfills through composting and recycling, resulting in

daily savings ofPhp15,000 from hauling and tipping fees.

SIGNIFICANCE IF STUDY

This study aims to know the effect of waste segregation. It is hoped that the

findings if this study will benefit various educational stakeholders.

1. Residents

 The residents should be informed to know how to how to

separate the incorruptible and the perishable.

2. Barangay Officials

 Barangay officials to promote proper Waste segregation

practices and make an action plan.

3. Community
LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL
Peñarrubia, Abra

 For the people, to be aware in using waste segregation to avoid

diseases.

4. Market Store

 The study will help Market Store to avoid diseases in our

community.

5. Students

 It can help the Student to teach other people on how to

segregate things.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This paper basically aims to gather insights, identify, define, present,

interpret, and analyze these data in the context of the effects of using plastic

bottles of Sitio. Pikiñio Barangay, Dumayco, Peñarrubia, Abra. The research

design of the study can be best describe from different perspectives, the

descriptive method is used in gathering the needed information for this

study. This method enables the researchers to interpret the theoretical

meaning of the findings for further studies. Specially the researchers utilized

a questionnaire type descriptive research method which enables the

researchers to gather information from the respondents which the

responding having any difficulties in answering the question required for the

researchers to more information regarding to the effectiveness of waste

segragation of Sitio. Pikiñio Barangay, Dumayco, Peñarrubia, Abra.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

In sample selection, the researcher arbitrarily decided that the Sitio.

Pikiñio Barangay, Dumayco, Peñarrubia, Abra. will be considered. Because

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Solid waste may be defined as all discarded solid materials resulting from

households, industrial, healthcare, constructional, agricultural, commercial,

and institutional sources. Solid waste generated in a city is often referred to

as municipal solid waste. In other literature and jurisdictions this category

may exclude sewage, dissolved solids in water, and industrial waste. For this

paper, no exclusions were made for the reason that in most developing

countries, most of the solid waste is not sorted at source, collection,

transportation and disposal points. Thus, municipal waste in the context of

developing countries may include waste that would not ordinarily be

LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL
Peñarrubia, Abra

considered municipal waste. Solid or municipal solid waste management

refers to the planning, financing and implementation of programs for solid

waste collection, transportation, treatment and final disposal in an

environmentally and socially acceptable manner. Failure to adhere to set

standards at any of the various stages constitutes “poor solid waste

management”.

Waste segregation practices greatly vary across regions, countries and even

within country . Modern waste management approaches encourage reduced

waste generation, re-use, recycling, composting, and safe disposal through

landfills, however, these are often not practiced. In developing countries a

large proportion of waste is not re-used. Waste sorting is also rare and

therefore this makes it difficult to re-cycle or compost. As a result a large

proportion of solid waste in developing countries is disposed of on open

dump sites and many times burnt. The variations in waste management

practices are often a reflection of existence of laws and policies governing

waste management and extent of their enforcement, available funding,

composition and quantity of waste generated. In many developing countries,

solid waste management is the responsibility of both the municipal

authorities and private providers. Collection is often from source or

temporary dumping ground, and final disposal is often at an open dumping

site on the outskirts of the city. Dumping sites are often sprawling open

grounds where truckloads deposit the waste. Dumped waste is often

scavenged for usable articles, recyclable materials and many times burnt to

reduce the bulk. Due to limited solid waste sorting at any stage, solid waste
LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL
Peñarrubia, Abra

composition is complex and may contain industrial, medical, electronic, and

human waste dumped on the same open grounds where all the other

municipal waste is dumped

DEFINITION OF TERM

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, participants, instruments

used, data gathering procedures, and treatment of the data used in the

study.

Research Design

In this study, the research used the descriptive method in gathering

the needed information for this method enables the researchers to interpret

the theoretical meaning of the findings for further studies. This study is

considered formal in terms of problem identification as the research as

mentioned beforehand, a survey questionnaire was used for the method of

collecting data.

Research Procedure

The researchers used the random sampling technique in getting their

respondents. The respondents are the selected residents of barangay

Dumayco.

Research Instrument

The study used a questionnaire made by the researcher and improved

by the help of teachers. The first part contained the demographic profile of

the respondents in terms of name, age, and gender. The second parts are

the statements that show the pollution problems and their effect on health.
LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL

Conclusion

There are many community issues of the residents in Dumayco an

example of thesis the insufficient funds of the barangay which makes living

in Dumayco as moneys greatly involved and greatly affects economics. The

lack of livelihood and the microfinance which also make the problem more

difficult to solve as the barangay’s source of income is limited and small

compared to their expenses that build up over time. Lack of street lights

which alarms the residents especially at night as the roads may

become unsafe and dangerous to walk on. The Out-of-school youth which

makes their life even more astray as they just live their lives without

purpose when they just stand by in one place or another. Most especially is

the improper waste disposal which is their biggest problem at the moment.

The methods used by the residents in disposing their wastes are

incinerating their garbage, segregating it by its category, throwing it to a

well, or they practice simple composting. This is happening because of there

was no one who will collect all their garbage’s or no collection of garbage.

The improper waste management of the barangay is the main factor

that causes the problem. If the people living in the area know how to

maintain their surroundings, to dispose their garbage knowingly and

properly make use of these wastes, then the problem may be lessened. If the

cause is the drainage of the barangay for multiple flooding of garbage, then

it’s their improper waste management that exceeds the factors. Improper

waste management can lead to certain problems in aspects of health and

LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL
Peñarrubia, Abra

economy.

The compost pit with shredder will be done in order to address the

issue of the barangay. This will help reduce the carbon footprint and smoke

pollution present in the barangay. There are other simpler projects such as

street sweeping but innovative devices or products are considered also to

make wastes useful.

Recommendation

Absence of proper waste management and consistent incineration of

garbage is present in the barangay. The product made by the researchers

which is the shredder with compost pit can improve the carbon footprint

and cleanliness for the community.

The researchers recommend that the citizens in the barangay to

attend the seminar that will be held by the group to further discuss on how

to manipulate the shredder and compost pit.

Compost is one of the important organic amendment because it will be

used for the sustainability of the soil and in the environment. The study

focuses on the specific benefit and long life effects of composting.

Citizens being exposed to the culture and lifestyle in barangay

Dumayco which is mostly based on agriculture. The compost from the

project will be a natural fertilizer that would-be used by the citizens to

prevent them from the need of using chemical fertilizers which can greatly

harm the soil
