Music Lesson Plan


Title:     “Fossils” (Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens)         Grade Level:  1    
Source:     Dr. Michelle McConkey     

Materials needed:  Speaker


            “Carnivals of the Animals” song by Saint-Saens 

Procedure:

A.S: What’s in a jungle? What kind of animals live in the jungle?  

1. Have the class listen to the song with instruments 


2. Have the class identify which jungle animal sounds familiar in the song 
3. Students identify animals such as gorillas and/or elephants in the song as the
instruments play 
4. Play song again and have students choose their movement with the animal
sound they hear in the song 
5. Ask students what instruments are being played in the song (bongos drums
and xylophone) 
6. Play song and have students do their movements along with the song
whenever they hear the instruments that sound like the animals (gorilla
and/or elephant) 
7. Goes over instruments that are played in the song with visual aids, such as
pictures of the different instruments 
8. Play song one last time for students to do their movements with it along with
the different animal sounds they hear being played by the instruments in the
song 

Closure: What animal sounded like the bongo drums? What animal sounded like
the xylophone? What other animals did we hear in the song? 
Educational Objective:  By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . . 
How to identify the different types of instruments heard in the song played
