Guidelines for Thesis Outline Defense

1. The student-researcher should submit the application for outline defense at least three
(3) days before the scheduled defense.
2. Four (4) printed copies of the thesis outline should be submitted to the Department
Research Coordinator (DRC) at least three (3) days before the scheduled defense;
three (3) copies for the examining committee (DRC, Program head, and 1 expert
faculty) and one (1) for the adviser. Note: No printed copy, no defense.
3. The content of the thesis outline to be submitted are the following: Preliminary pages,
Chapters 1 to 3, Literature Cited, and all forms for the Appendices.
4. The student-researcher must secure their invoice at least three (3) days before the
defense from the DRC before going to the cashier’s office.
5. Payment for the panel is PHP 100 each, PHP 125 for the DRC, and PHP 350 for the
adviser. Submit a photocopy of the receipt of the thesis outline defense payment to the
DRC.
6. Each student-researcher will be given 10 to 15 minutes to present his/her paper.
7. PowerPoint presentation for the defense will include the following:
a. Title
b. Background of the Study
c. Objectives/Research Questions
d. Methodology
e. Research Instrument (Survey Questionnaire/Interview or FGD guide)
8. The examining committee will be given 20 minutes for their
questions/comments/suggestions to the paper presented.
9. The adviser must write down the questions/comments/suggestions using the USM-
EDR-F16-Rev.0.2020.11.16 Outline Defense Comment form.
10. The defense will be done face-to-face for fully vaccinated and with Philhealth
membership students at the College of Education building. Otherwise, it will be
conducted online through Google Meet.
11. Student-researcher should wear formal or school uniforms during the defense.
12. Student-researcher must bring their own laptop during the defense and must come
before the scheduled time for the technical preparations.
