ABSTRACT
This research entitled The Analysis of Accuracy Level From Indonesian-English
Translation on Children Story Books For Kindergarten School. The purpose of this research
was to find out how the acuracy level and what kind of method used on children story books
from Indonesian-English translation. This research was a qualitative method to evaluate and
investigate the accuracy level of the story books.. There were two books to be analyzed on
the sentences. The result showed that the first story book entitled Keajaiban Sabarwas in less
accurate category which is the accuracy level isabout (29%), less accurate (51%) and
inaccurate (20%).While, the second story book entitled Aku Berani Tidur Sendiri was in
inaccurate category which is the accuracy level is about (0%), less accurate (30,4%) and
inaccurate (69,6%). The faithful method is mostly used in the first story book. Word for word
method is mostly used in the second story book. From the finding, it can be said that the
children story books cannot be called as a good translation works, and those books are not
good to be used in teaching learning language, and the translatorsof those two books are
amateur translators who did not have any experiences in translating.
Key Words: Accuracy Level, Methods, Children story books, Translation

INTRODUCTION
Books are one of the most frequently media needed for everyone. Story books are one of
the media used in introducing a reading for children, we are not only can introduce in one
language, but we are also able to introduce in another language. One alternative used is a
translation.
Larson (1984, p.3) stated that translation means transferring the meaning of the source
language into receptor language. However, translation is not only about transferring a
message but it also deals with the equivalence. Catford in his book (1965, p.20) A Linguistic

1
Theory of Translation: An Essay inApplied Linguistics, he defines, “translation is the
replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another
language (TL)”. As supported by Baker (1995) Baker (1995) stated that translation is
difficult, even for people. To begin with, you have to know both languages carefully.
In evaluating a translation, there are several aspects to be concerned by a translator to
achieve a good translation. One of them is accuracy because inaccuracy may reduce the
message from the source language, which can be fatal to readers, even children as the listener
of the stories. Webster’s Dictionary in Sahrain (2017) proposed that accuracy is the most
important aspect in translation to produce the quality of translation, it is related to the
correctness of transferring a message. Accuracy aspect have the weight which the highest
than the other aspect, it is adjusted to the basic concepts of the translation process as the
process in transferring the message (accuracy) of the source language text into the target
language Nababan (2012). The accuracy can be checked by comparing the source language
text and the target language text.
In this situation, many people use the story books to convey a learning and deliver the
moral message to the children, besides the story books which is full of the good educational
meaning both for reading or to tell the stories in two languages. But, as readers, we have
difficulties to understand what the meaning is when the message of the translation book did
not pay attention to the context of words or sentences that should be used especially in the
target language. In other words, the source language text should have an equivalence in
meaning about delivering the message or content in the target language text. Thus, it is
requires a deeper study if we want to tell a story in English as the translation result of the
book written in the book, we must know about how the translation quality in the book first,
whether the message in the target language is appropriate or not to be introduced to the
children. And to know whether the translation can be considered good or not, an evaluation
should be made by analyzing and evaluating the translation result with comparing between
the source language and the target language of the books.
Related to the children story books translation, the purpose of this research is conducted
the study about how the accuracy level and what kinds the methods are used by the
translators in translating the children story books. Furthermore, this study aims to give a
consideration before introduce or use the story book as a learning media that translated from
Indonesian into English to the children.

2
METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH
The design of this research is a case study and using the qualitative method to describe
the accuracy level as a term in the quality of translation on children story book. Creswell
(2013), qualitative method is used to fill the inquiry process of understanding the method of
exploring a social or human problem. Creswell (2014) defines a case study are a design of
inqury found in many fields, especially evaluation, in which the researcher explores in depth
analysis a case, often a program, an event, an activity, a process or one or more individuals.
So the focus of this study is to analyze and evaluate the translation result from Indonesian
into English on children story book and measure the level of accuracy and describe the
method used by the translators in translating the children story books.
The researcher obtained the data in the form of written document, the sources of
data were children story books translated from Indonesian into English. And the document
analysis will be used to enrich the qualitative research because it has a role as an authentic
and natural evidence. There were two books to be analyzed. The first book entitled“Aku
Berani Tidur Sendiri” and the second entitled “Keajaiban Sabar”. The book was
published by Pustaka Sandro Jaya and Bintang Indonesia Jakarta. The main concern is on
the sentences .The materials were taken based on the theory of purposive sampling, which
is as stated by Cohen (2007) Researchers handpick the cases to be included in the sample
on the
basis of their judgment of their typicality or possession of the
particular characteristic being sought. In this way, they build up asample that is
satisfactory their specific needs. Therefore, in this research, the researcher used purposive
sampling because the researcher took the samples to be analyzed intentionally based on
the characteristics and objectives of the study.
The books choosen were based on the considreration, first, this book usually used
in kindergarten school and it contains a translation result or the product oriented of the
book that has two languages (Indonesian-English), and has different writer, so it can be
used to measure the accuracy level in translation between the two books. Second, it is an
authentic text and contains informative education matter for the students in kindergarten
school as a learning media especially for the language learning, and one of them is to
obtain any vocabularies in English. So it is important to be introduced with a good
translation.
The researcher also required the data cards that will be applied as the supporting
of instruments rubric of translation accuracy. One data card is for one story book

3
translation. Each data card consisted of the criteria of accuracy from Nababan for
assessing the accuracy of the translation, in the following table.

Table 2.1.
Scale for Scoring Accuracy (Nababan, et al 2012)
Scale Definition Indication

3 Accurate The meaning of words, phrases, clauses, or

sentences in the source text is accurately conveyed
into the target text. There are no distortions,
addition or deletion in meaning.

2 Less Accurate The meaning of words, phrases, clauses, or

sentences in the source text is mostly conveyed
accurately in the target text. However, there are
still distortions in meaning (ambigous) or there is
deletion of meaning or addition of meaning that
distracts the integrity of the message.
1 Inaccurate The meaning of words, phrases, clauses, or
sentences in the source text is conveyed
inaccurately in the target text or deleted or added.

To obtain the validity of the data, the researcher used informants (raters). The researcher
asked about one until two lecturers of English Study Program in Universitas Kuningan to be
the raters, because they had many experiences in assessing the translation works.
In analyzing the data, the researcher used four stages of data analysis in qualitative
research (Creswell, 2014) there are:
1. Process and prepare data to be analyzed. In this case, researcher prepared two book of
children story book as document that has been collected.
2. Read and entire data. In this case, the researcher identified the sentences contained
from each book.
3. Analyzing in more detail by coding data. In this research, researcher analyzed the data
based on the specification to achieve the research objectives. Therefore, the simple
coding will be employed here.
For example : DC 1/SB1/S1.
DC : Data Card number, there were DC1-DC2.
SB :Story Book number, means there were SB1-SB2.
S :Sentence Number, there were S1-S78.

4
After encoded the data, next is calculating the data. The formula for the
calculating process:
P = F x 100%
N
Note :
P = Percentage
F = Frequency
N = Overall Number
4. Interpret data. In this case, the researcher try to interpret the findings based on the research
objectives.

From the data above, in the second story book the researcher found that there was no
sentence which is considered accurate or for about (0%), there are 7 sentences are considered
less accurate or for about (30,4%) and 16 sentences are considered as inaccurate or for about
(69,6%).The following data are the explanation and the example of an analysis of the data.
Accurate Translation, means that the meaning in source language text transferred
well in the target language text, no distortion and deletion in meaning.
Example 1 : S2/DC1
SL : Assalamualaikum, namaku Yazqi
TL : Assalamualaikum, my name is Yazqi
Based on the result of the translation, it is categorized into an accurate translation
because the words or the sentence transferred correctly, as in the structure and the content, it
was appropriate in the target language (English).
Example 2 : S3/DC1
SL : Umurku 4 tahun.
TL : Iam 4 years old. Based on the result of the translation, it is categorized
into an accurate translation because the words and the sentence transferred well, absolutely
no distortion in meaning or message between the source language and the target language.
Less Accurate, means that the meaning in source language text transferred well
enough in the target language text but there still addition and deletion in meaning. There are
several data which belongs to this category.
Example 1 : S5/DC1
SL : Umurnya 5 tahun.
TL : Age 5 years old.
Based on the example above, the translation has been translated accurately, but it is
included into the category of inaccurate because there is still deletion in the phrase of “umur-

6
nya”, it makes the sentence unclear who is 5 years old which is in SL it has been mentioned.
So it should be "her age is 5/she is 5 years old" based on the children’s story book that
Yasmin is 5 years old.
Example 2 : S9/DC1
SL : Yuk, kita simak sama-sama...
TL : Let’s read it together
Based on the example above, the translation has been translated accurately, but it is
still inappropriate using word choice for the word “read” in translating the word from SL
“simak” it would be better to use “listen”.
Example 3 : S9/DC2
SL : “Ya kalau kau berani, kami juga harus berani”, kata Budi dan Anto
TL : Ya if you dare, we also have to be brave” said Anto and Budi.
*alright/yes
Based on the example above, the translation has been translated accurately, but there
is still inappropriate using word choice in translating the word “Ya” in English, it should be
changed and it would be better to translate that word with “yes/alright” that has meaning
ok/well.
Inaccurate, means that the meaning in the source language text inaccurately
conveyed, there are distortion in meaning, deletion and addition in meaning. There are
several data which belongs to this category.
Example 1 : S13/DC1
SL : Pukul tujuh pagi ayah mendapatkan telepon.
TL : Father is called by phone on 7 o’clock morning.
This translation is categorized into inaccurate because the sentence has a distortion in
the meaning (ambiguous) of the phrase “father is called by phone”, it can be seen the
sentence has another meaning, and the translator is using the wrong pattern of passive voice.
In passive voice, the action is performed on the subject, the subject receives an action. But in
this context, the translator using the wrong subject is using the phone as an inanimate object.
As in reality, it is impossible for a phone to do an action like calling someone without an
action from the human itself. So it would be better to use a phrase like “father got a telephone
call at 7 o’clock morning” or in passive voice, “the telephone call was received by father at 7
o'clock morning”.
Example 2 : S18/DC1
SL : Pukul sebelas siang, Yasmin dan Yazqi pun bersiap-siap.

7
TL : Yasmin and Yazqi are already on 11 o’clock.
The example above is categorized into an inaccurate translation because the word “are
already” interpreted become “bersiap-siap” in target language. It actually "already is an
adverb, and it has a function to emphasize something happened faster at an unspecified time
before now or before something else happened. So it is less precise because the sentence
needs a verb for the word “bersiap-siap. It would be better to translate with “Yasmin and
Yazqi got ready at 11 o'clock”.
The Example 3 : S3/DC2
SL : “Iya aku sudah berani tidur sendiri sekarang” kata Benydengan bangganya.
TL : “Yes, i have dare to sleep own now” Beny words with proud.
The sentence is categorized into inaccurate because it was an error on the sentence
structure, which is the translator using wrong tenses for the communicative sentence above,
and almost doing a mistake on the whole of the word choices. The word “have” even though
it has a function as an auxiliary verb that has meaning “telah/sudah”, and the word after
"have" usually using past participle, while in this sentence, it was a communicate sentence
and it should be using present tense for the communicative sentence because here the
utterance using the subject “I” as the first person. And the word choices for saying “tidur
sendiri” it better to use “sleep alone” because in cambridge dictionary it has meaning
“without other people” while “own” has meaning for belonging. It would be better to be
translated as “Yes, I dare to sleep alone now in my room” said Beny proudly.

Total 76

The most dominant methods used are faithful method is about 44 times according to
the table above, and mostly used in the first of children story book. The second dominant are
word for word method with the total 17 times and mostly used in the second of childen story
book. The lowest total number of translation methods are used in free method with 1 time
used in the first story book. While communication method the total is 14 times and mostly
used in the first of children story book. The following is the explanation and the example of
the application ofmethods in the data.
Word for word translation, means the translation method in which the SL word
order is preserved and the words translated singly by their most common meaning, out of
context.
The example 1 : S3/DC2
SL : “Iya aku sudah berani tidur sendiri sekarang kata Beny dengan bangganya.”
TL : “Yes, i have dare to sleep own now Beny words with proud.”
Based on the translation above, the translator uses word for word translation because
the translator translate the word singly or word by word where it places the TL just below the
SL as according to the Newmark’s theory.
The example 2 : S6/DC2
SL : “Semua jadi gelap gulita dan aku tak bisa melihat apapun”.
TL : “All finished pitch-dark and i no could see anything”.
Based on the example above, the translator uses word for word translation because the
translator translates the word singly and did not arrange the structure well until it was made
the sentence was rigid to be translated into the target language (English). And the translation
is used in the second story book.
Faithful translation, means the translation method it attempts to produce the precise
contextual meaning of the original within the constraints of the TL grammatical structures.
The example 1 : S14/DC1
SL : “Kriiiing ...!” Ayah mengangkat telepon dan berbicara dengan seseorang.

9
TL : “kriiiing...!” Father receives call and he talks with someone.
Based on the example above, the translator uses a faithful method, it can be seen from
the sentence structure of the translation which is the translator translates the sentence just
below the meaning of the source language text without considering the structure of the text in
the target language that it is a narrative, and it must use past tense.
The example 2 : S17/DC1
SL : Tak lama, ayah pun pergi dan berjanji pulang sebelum zuhur.
TL : Not long time, he went away and he promised us to return before midday (zuhur).
Based on the translation above, the translator uses a faithful method, it can be seen
from the text where the translator tries to maintain the meaning from SL into TL that makes
the translation result rigid. We can see from the word “tak lama” translated as “not long
time”.
Free translation, means the translation method that produces the TL text without the
style, form, or content of the original. It reproduces the matter, without manner, or the content
without the form of the original.
The example 1 : S28/DC1
SL : “Ih, Ayah gimana sih, kok belum pulang juga,” keluh Yasmin.
TL : “Ouch, what is going on father, he is not coming now,” complained Yasmin.
Based on the translation above, the translator uses a free method because the text
prefers the content that is similar to the SL than consider the sentence form of the SL text,
and the meaning expressed freely in TL, so the content of the SL text is still limited, and the
text looks like a long interpretation from SL into TL.
Communicative Translation, is the translation method which attempts to render the
exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are
readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership.
The example 1 : S4/DC1
SL : Aku punya kakak bernama Yasmin.
TL : I have an older sister, her name is Yasmin.
Based on the translation result above, the translator uses a communicative method, it
can be seen where the sentence translated appropriately in the context of the TL text, and
both aspects of the structure and content are translated well. We can see the translator
translates the sentence of “aku punya kaka” into “I have an older sister". Even though the
translator put the translation of “kakak” directly translated into the older sister's name, it does
not matter because the translation is used in order to make the readers understand easier that

10
it is Yazqi’s sister. So the translator translates the utterance just to make it clear that here the
word of “kakak” is female. So the translation can be accepted and understood by readers.
The example 2 : S24/DC1
SL : “Bu, ayah kok belum pulang juga?” tanya Yazqi.
TL : “Mom, why does not father go home yet?” asked Yazqi.
Based on the translation above, we can see the sentence translated into the context
meaning in TL text. Where it is an interrogative sentence in communicative form using
present tense, and the content translated well in order to be accepted and understood by
readers.

CONCLUSION
Based on the findings, in the first story book entitled Keajaiban Sabar, the researcher
found the accuracy level is about (29%), less accurate for about (51%) and inaccurate for
about (20%). It can be concluded that most of the translation result of this book was in a less
accurate category. In this book, the translator still makes any grammatical mistakes, including
the word choices, the use of the tenses, and passive voice. It can be seen from the data
analysis, when the translator translates a simple sentence which is easier to be translated, the
sentence are correct, but if the sentences are complex sentences that maybe unfamiliar to be
translated, such as the sentences that should be changed into passive voice, the translator did
not have any understanding, and often makes mistakes in the translation. So it was assumed
that the translator had a little bit of understanding in English, and was still confused in
composing several sentences using the correct sentence structure TL. While, in the second
story book entitled Aku Berani Tidur Sendiri, the researcher found the accuracy level is about
(0%), less accurate for about (30,4%) and inaccurate for about (69,6%). It can be concluded
that there was no sentence that was categorized into an accurate translation, but instead the
book’s translations were mostly in the inaccurate category. Based on the data analysis, it was
assumed that the translator made any grammatical mistakes more than the first story book
including the word choices, part of speech, the use of the tenses, punctuation, direct and
indirect sentence, and so on. The translator did not pay attention to the context of the sentence
and mostly translated the sentences word by word, which would cause inaccuracy. And the
translator has difficulties in arranging the sentence structure, such as how to adjust the

11
sentence in a negative statement. As the result, their translation was inaccurate and created
many ambiguities and caused many distortions in meaning from the translation result of the
book. So it was assumed that the translator did not have much understanding in English.

It can be said that the translators of those two books did not have any knowledges
about both of the languages are source language (Indonesian) and the target language
(English), also lack of an understanding about how to produce a good translation product.
The translator only put the translation from the source text into target text without doing the
process of translation. So the children story books cannot be called as a good translation
works, and those all the story books it is not good to be used in teaching learning language
because there are so many grammatical mistakes in the translation of the story books.

The second research question is about the translation method used by the translators
in translating the story of the books entitled Keajaiban Sabar and Aku Bisa Tidur Sendiri.
The researcher classifies the method of translation based on Newmark’s theory. After
analyzed the method of the translation, the researcher found four methods: word for word,
faithful, free and communicative. Based on the data in the previous chapter, it can be said that
the faithful method is mostly used in the first children story book for about 39 clauses that
have been translated. Meanwhile, in the second children story book word for word method is
mostly used in the second story book entitled Aku Berani Tidur Sendiri for about 17 clauses
that have been translated. The other methods are free for about 1 clause and communicative
method for about 14 clauses which are used in the first children story book. It can also be
concluded that the translator tends to maintain the meaning from the source language into the
target language and still translate the word singly or word by word and did not consider the
context of the story books.
