Mrs. Rhonda Reed

During this semester I had the opportunity of being a mentor at Prairiland ISD at

Blossom Elementary with Kourtney Roddy, who teaches Kindergarten. While being in her

classroom, I was able to achieve the experience that I need or will need for the future. While

mentoring I was able to get to know Mrs. Roddy and her past experience on teaching and some

advice that was very useful to me!

When I had started mentoring at Blossom Elementary School with Mrs. Roddy who

teaches a Kindergarten Class. I started my observation with Mrs. Roddy in March of 2022 and

finished in April of 2022, while I was observing with Mrs. Roddy I got to know her a little.

When I had asked her how long she had been teaching; she had told me that teaching was

actually not her first choice! She was actually a nurse at a general hospital and right after she had

gotten pregnant and went back to work, she was always on call, called into work, or staying

longer than needed. She told me that she was missing time away from her kids and family. But in

the meanwhile she was also studying to be a teacher, after she was finished her studying she

applied to be a teacher at Prairiland ISD and has been there for a few years.

While at Blossom Elementary, there were children who were well behaved and there

were also children who were rowdy and liked to cause mischief. I was able to see how Mrs.

Roddy would catch the attention of the children who behaved well and the children who would

like to cause trouble. She would sometimes use candy to catch their attention or use it as a

reward to those who are ready to start with the lesson. While the students would be doing their

work I would call them to a desk in the back of the classroom and have them read me a book that

was about a letter of the alphabet that they would be studying that week. Each student I got to

know were so wonderful and very energetic and it is always wonderful to get to know the

students and see how they get to interact in school.

During observation I would go in the morning for a couple hours and watch them do their

morning work. They would go over days of the week, the months of the years and talk about

either their day after school and how the weather is and make predictions for the weather in the

afternoon. The days that I would come in the middle of the day, I got to see when they would

either go to PE or to Art/ Computer class. Being able to see them in a different class with a

different teacher was so nice.

Overall, I had a wondertime being able to have my observation at Prairiland ISD at the

Blossome Elementary, just show to me how I would love to be a teacher and see the ways of

have some teachers do differently in their own classrooms.
