    How to Use a Digital Vernier Caliper

    A vernier caliper is a versatile measuring tool that can be used to measure inside diameter,
    outside diameter, and depth using a ruler with a sliding jaw that can be moved with a thumb
    screw. This valuable tool will help you measure various items around a machine shop easily
    down to .01mm. These 5 easy to follow steps will show you how to use one properly.

    Tools and Materials needed:

     Digital Vernier Caliper


     Diameter or Depth to measure

    NOTICE Do not drop! Vernier Caliper may not measure accurately after a drop.
    Recalibrate or return to manufacturer for repair or replacement.

    Outside Diameter Measurement:


    1. Set the head of the caliper perpendicular to the object being
    measured
    2. CLOSE the Caliper by sliding the thumb roller counterclockwise to
    slide the lower jaw till it is flush with the item being measured
    3. Turn the lock screw to lock the measurement in place to read
    precisely.
    4. Read your measurement using two different measurement scales,
    using the LCD screen
    Inside Diameter Measurement:
    1. Set the Caliper head perpendicular to the object being measured
    2. OPEN the Caliper by spinning the thumb roller clockwise to slide the
    upper jaws to contact the inside measurement
    3. Turn the lock screw to lock the measurement reading in precisely.
    4. Read your measurement using two different measuring scales, using the
    LCD screen.

    Depth Measurement:
    1. Place the depth rod over the hole being measured
    2. OPEN the caliper by sliding the thumb screw clockwise
    3. When the depth gauge stops, turn the lock screw
    4. Read your accurate depth measurement from the two scales available,
    using the LCD screen.

    Using a vernier caliper is a precise way to measure the inside diameter, outside
    diameter and depth of really anything down to .001mm. By following this set of
    instructions, you will have no issues utilizing it for your needs.
