Assessment for Lesson No.: _6.1_

Instructions: Suppose that you are selling your shirt designs on a social media platform.
One design is sparking an outrage among a group of people. Apparently, symbols in your
design resemble something offensive to these people and they are contacting you to take it
down. However, this design is selling like hotcakes to other people and you are gaining
great profit from it. In other words, one group of people finds your design offensive, but
others don’t seem to have a problem with it. What would you do in this situation?

As a member of an online community or as one of the users of social media, I am not just
responsible of the things that I post but it is also my responsibility to show manners and respect
to the people that can see the things that I posts online. Posting something on social media
requires me to expect that some people will appreciate my post and some will not. Because for
sure, I will be receiving both positive and negative comments. So, in handling the given
situation, what I would do first is to listen to the people that are being affected by my design. I
will hear their side and their explanation. Then, I will make a thorough research about it. After
hearing their side and researching, I will explain the meaning of the design to them because there
might just be a misunderstanding between me and the people who find my design offensive. It is
possible that we have different interpretations on the design. Maybe, if they will hear my side, it
will convince them to let me sell my products. I will apologize to them and say that I didn’t mean
to offend them and it is not my intention to hurt their feelings. But if my design affects the lives
of other people in a negative way, if it encourages other people to discriminate and do hurtful
and inhumane actions towards a group of people (even if it’s not really my intention), I will take
my designs down. I’d rather lose my chance of earning a lot of money than be the reason of other
people’s sufferings. May this kind of situation become a reminder to all of us to be responsible
enough in handling our social media accounts. Before posting, we should ask ourselves first if
this post will hurt anybody’s feelings or not. Let us keep reminding ourselves that a certain post
may mean nothing to us but it may mean something very important to others. It may just be an
entertainment for us but it may mean offensive to them. It may look like just for aesthetic
purposes but it may look discriminating to other people. Thus, we must put the feelings of others
first over the numbers of reactions, attentions, and profit that we will be getting because the lives
of us, humans, are more precious than these things.
