PART A - Micro Project Proposal

“Study and Display A chart on Supercharging of IC engine.”

1.0 Brief Introduction

Supercharging of IC Engines - It is the process of increasing the mass (or
in other words density) of the air fuel mixture (in spark ignition engines)
or air (in compression ignition engines) induced into the engine cylinder.
This is usually done with the help of a compressor or blower known as
supercharger. It has been experimentally found that the supercharging
increases the power developed by the engine. It is widely used in aircraft
engines, as the mass of air sucked in the engine cylinder decreases at very
high altitudes. This happens, because atmospheric pressure decreases
with the increase in altitude.

Following are the objects of supercharging the engines:

1. To reduce mass of the engine per brake power (as required in aircraft
engines).
2. To maintain power of air craft engines at high altitudes where less
oxygen is available for combustion.
3. To reduce space occupied by the engine (as required in marine engines).
4. To reduce. Consumption of lubricating oil (as required is all types of
engines).
5. To increase the power output of an engine when greater power is required
(as required in racing cars and other engines)

PART B Micro Project

“Study and Display A Chart on Supercharger

of IC Engine.”

1.0 Brief Description

 Supercharging of internal combustion engines is in practice for a long
time as a method for improving engine power output. Entering the
millennium, a new trend is appearing. The trend points to small
displacement engines in order to meet emission legislation on fuel
consumption and emission control.
 The consumers, however, still demand equally the same or better
performance they are used to. Agood way to meet these needs is to have
supercharging which may be called forced induction. As already stated,
the purpose of supercharging an engine is to raise the density of the air
charge, before it enters the cylinders. Thus, the increased mass of air
will be inducted which will then be compressed in each cylinder. This
makes more oxygen available for combustion than the conventional
method of drawing the fresh air charge into the cylinder (naturally
aspirated). Consequently, more air and fuel per cycle will be forced into
the cylinder, and this can be effectively burnt during the combustion
process to raise the engine power output to a higher value than would
otherwise be possible.
The points to be noted in supercharging an engine summarized as:
 Supercharging increases the power output of the engine. It does not
increase the fuel consumption, per brake kW hour.
 Certain percentage of power is consumed in compressing the air. This
power has to be taken from the engine itself. This will lead to some
power loss. However, it is seen that the net power output will be more
than the power output of an engine of the same capacity, without
supercharging.
 The engine should be designed to withstand the higher forces due to
supercharging.
 The increased pressure and temperature as a result of supercharging,
may lead to detonation

supercharged and naturally aspirated engine are given in Table 3.1.

Types of Supercharger

 There are three main categories of superchargers for automotive use:

 Centrifugal turbochargers – driven from exhaust gases.
 Centrifugal superchargers – driven directly by the engine via a belt-drive. 
 Positive displacement pumps – such as the Roots, twin-screw (Lysholm),
and TVS (Eaton) blowers.

 Difference Between Turbocharger and Supercharger

Method of Supercharging

 In this method a compressor or a bowler driven by the engine is used to

provide compressed air to the engine.

MGM’s Polytechnic Aurangabad 10

 Supercharging of an engine can be summarized as: -

1. Supercharging increases power output of an engine without

increasing fuel consumption.
2. Certain amount of power generated by the engine goes for the
compression of air but overall power output is more.
3. The engine which is to be used with a supercharger is made to
withstand higher forces due to supercharging.
4. Due to increased pressure and temperature of the combustion
process, tendency of detonation increases. Therefore, fuel with better
antiknock quality should be used.

SUPERCHARGING OF IC ENGINE

 Maintaining the power output of an engine working at high attitude such as aero-engine
as at high altitude less oxygen is available for combustion of fuel.

 Having better air turbulence and hence more complete combustion result in more
power reduced specific fuel consumption and smooth running of the engine.

 Increasing the existing power when the necessity of increasing its power Aries.

 Reduce the mass of the engine per indicated power developed.

 Reduce the bulk of the engine to fit into a limited space such as in marine engine.

 Compensates the drop in volumetric efficiency which may be due to high altitude or
due to high speed engine of racing car.

 It increase mass density of air and driven by engine power.

 Increase power output of engine depend on engine speed and increase mass intake air
in suction manifold.

 Higher intake air pressure increase power output limited to detonation.

 It is located before intake manifold or carburetor.

 To increase the mechanical efficiency.
