1. Title: Ergonomically Designed and Developed “Go Bag” for School Children: A Survival Kit (2018)
Authors: Ma. Teodora Guitierrez, Arianne A. Palisoc, Kristel Lirio, Winly Secreto, Ronald Taruc, and Klienne Noble

“Designs 1 and 2 were evaluated using the multiple constraints or decision criteria. Design 1 is more economical due to
lower material cost as compared to Design 2. However, Design 2 is more ergonomically design as compared to Design 1, this is
based on how the bag will be lifted. A cross section lifting has less stress than lifting with a straight shoulder strapping. In the
environmental constraints Design 1 is more environment friendly than design 2, due to the fact that design 1 has lesser energy
consumption in producing the bag. Hence, Design 1 is the better design was developed into prototype. The weight of this bag is
300 grams with approximately 4kg of maximum allowable weight. The total weight of the recommended items of survival kit as
mentioned in section 2, design inputs, is approximately 1000 grams. Overall weight of the emergency bag for school children is
1,300 grams, which is a feasible weight to carry by the school children.”

“…an effective citizen and community preparedness warrants public awareness and education programs to ensure citizens will
take appropriate advance actions to reduce their vulnerability especially during the initial days (72hrs) after disaster impact. The
Disaster preparedness kit is an indispensable part of preparedness, and it should start with a gold standard set of essential
supplies. This gold standard should be based on the common conditions that any natural or manmade disaster would likely
present and equip each household to face the common conditions. In particular, the common conditions include living without
power, limitations on drinking water, and being unable to leave the home to acquire additional supplies for a few a day. The goal of
a gold standard is to provide everyone with proven essentials, so individuals and households are empowered to further customize
their disaster supply kits to best serve their unique needs [30]. For people to take action, they must recognize the hazard, believe it
to be avoidable, and believe that there is an advantage in taking preventative actions [31- 33].”

Introduction. An all-of-society approach to disaster risk reduction emphasizes inclusion and engagement in preparedness
activities. A common recommendation is to promote household preparedness through the preparation of a ‘grab bag’ or
‘disaster kit’, that can be used to shelter-in-place or evacuate. However, there are knowledge gaps related to how this strategy
is being used around the world as a disaster risk reduction strategy, and what evidence there is to support recommendations.
Result. There are gaps in the literature regarding evidence on grab bag effectiveness. We also found variations in how grab
bag guidelines are promoted across the five case studies. Discussion. While there are clearly common items recommended
for household grab bags (such as water and first aid kits), there are gaps in the literature regarding : 1) the evidence base to
inform guidelines; 2) uptake of guidelines; and 3) to what extent grab bags reduce demands on essential services and
improve disaster resilience.
Performance Task 1. Preparedness. Paste a picture of your Family showing your Family GO BAG and label its content. (10
points). Briefly indicate the importance of each item. This is important for Health Optimizing Physical Education and Disaster
Readiness and Risk Reduction subjects.
