CC’s Voice: Hello prospective teacher! Welcome to this course CAED500 C- Component
A (Self-awareness). By now, I am confident that you really wanted to become
a teacher and that you have visualized yourself already being in front of the
classroom teaching.

As part of your readiness to the bigger world of learning, the university would
like to ensure that you have adequate personal resources. This so called
personal resources are deemed indispensable for you to become effective
individuals inside and outside the university. This resources includes sufficient
self-awareness which comprises your strength and weaknesses, interest
and work values, ability to provide insight out of personal experience,
and capacity to balance work and life. Thus, in this course you are expected
to introspect and become mindful of your innate potentials and abilities. You
will also be required to face and accept your deepest self as it becomes an
vital aspect of success.

Let us begin!

4
Big Picture
Week 1: Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO): At the end of the unit, you are better able to
understand Self-awareness. Specifically you are expected to:

a. Understand your sense of identity in belonging to a particular group;

b. Identify and exhibit the attitudes and habits appropriate for work.; and
c. Explore appropriate role models with whom they can identify.

Big Picture in Focus: ULOa. Understand your sense of identity in belonging to

a particular group

Metalanguage
In this section, the most essential terms relevant to self-awareness and to demonstrate
ULOa will be operationally defined to establish a common frame of reference as to how
the sense of identity affects an individual’s awareness of himself/herself. This will also
discuss particular advantages and disadvantages of identity amidst when one becomes
part of a group.

Please proceed immediately to the “Essential Knowledge” part since the first lesson
is also definition of essential terms.

Essential Knowledge
Self - Awareness is having a clear perception of our personality, including

strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self-Awareness allows

us to understand other people, how we perceive, our attitude and our responses to them in

the moment. We might quickly assume that we are self-aware, but it isn’t a skill measured

in binary of “got it” or “don’t have it” (on/off) options. It is helpful to have a range of scale for

awareness.

5
Why is self –awareness important?

Research shows that self-awareness is directly related to both emotional intelligence

and success. It helps you create achievable goals because you can consider your

strengths, weaknesses, and what drives you when you are setting goals. It allows you to

guide yourself down the right path by choosing to pursue the opportunities that best fit your

skillset, preferences and tendencies. It makes it easier to identify situations and people that

hit our triggers and enables us to anticipate our own reactions. It allows us to make positive

behavioural changes that can lead to greater personal and interpersonal success. Self-

awareness is often the first step to setting goals. However, to fully appreciate our self-

awareness, we must first examine and identify the image that we set for ourselves.

We all have a certain image of ourselves - beliefs about the kind of person we

are. Having a strong sense of identity seems to be desirable, something that brings comfort

and security. Many people seem to spend a lot of time trying to figure out who they are,

what they want, and what they believe.

And perhaps rightly so: having a strong identity certainly seems to have advantages.

A clear sense of "who you are" makes it easier to connect with other similar people and

groups. People with a strong identity often stand out more and are more memorable. I'd

guess that the people who are most successful in life - especially people who become

famous - all have pretty strong identities.

Identity also helps us to make decisions and to know how to behave. We're

constantly faced with complex decisions and circumstances. With no prior beliefs about

6
what we should do, weighing all the options and making a decision would be near

impossible. Having a sense of what kind of person you are makes it much easier to decide

how you should behave, and to have confidence in your choice between options. This

makes decisions that would otherwise be agonising virtually effortless

A strong sense of self is vital, especially in this day and age. With so many external

influences and variables that can change our lives in an instant and pull the roots out from

where we stand, a robust sense of self is what keeps individuals grounded and on the right

course. A strong sense of self allows us to go through any storm we may encounter without

being swayed by the winds of change. But how does one go about gaining a strong sense

of self? More importantly, what is a strong sense of self?

A sense of self is defined as one's perception of oneself and an awareness of who

you truly are. Each person's sense of self is directly related to how they feel about

themselves, their levels of self-esteem, and their confidence or lack thereof. Each person's

overall perception of self is critical because it lays the foundation for all other aspects and

elements in our lives. A strong sense of self often breeds confidence and ambition during

a fragile sense of self-engenders cowardice and lethargy. Consequently, a strong sense of

self is utterly paramount, and so is knowing how to gain it. If this is something you seek to

do, we will learn more about how you can accomplish this later throughout the article.

7
How to Gain a Stronger Sense of Self

The road to self-awareness begins with a few key steps and is a journey that is

always evolving. If you are just starting or if you stumbled a bit and need some help to get

back on track, here are some great tips to help you foster a stronger sense of self.

 Believe in Yourself!

Self-belief and self-love are vital to attaining a strong sense of self. Self-belief is the

defining factor of a strong sense of self. It is critical for each person to know who they are,

trust in their strengths and abilities, and know they can accomplish anything they put their

minds to and work for.

Self-belief is something that comes from within, not external sources. Encouragement

and support from other people are great. However, what matters is what you believe, not

what others think. This is especially true when you face critics and negative individuals. Not

all criticism is bad criticism, but you are always going to encounter some people in life who

will resent you for your opinions, beliefs, goals, and actions. Whether that resentment is

rooted in intimidation or poor self-esteem on their end is immaterial as resentful, petty

people will often work to discourage you or throw you off track. Regardless of what anyone

else says, your power comes from within. With a strong sense of self, you know exactly

who you are and what you are capable of, and no one else is able to tell you otherwise.

8
People with a strong sense of who they are able to remain unswayed by the energy of

others. A strong sense of self is first acquired by maintaining self-belief because confidence

in oneself is powerful enough to overcome all kinds of hardships, struggles, and obstacles

that will inevitably present themselves at one point or another. Individuals who know who

they are and love that individuals are equipped to handle challenges and difficulties. Self-

belief also produces hope and breeds positive self-fulfilling prophecies. Those who wish to

gain a strong sense of self should first begin by believing in themselves and their abilities.

After this has been achieved, the next step can be taken.

 Know When to Say No!

Believe it or not, knowing when to say no is vital to each person's sense of self. Life is

abundantly full of distractions, requirements, demands, and other obligations. Knowing

when to turn down certain people, situations, and requests is imperative to acquiring and

maintaining one's sense of self. The inability to please everyone and everything by always

saying yes are extremely draining and self-destructive.

Knowing when to say no is paramount to having and gaining a strong sense of self.

It provides boundaries and helps you understand what is most important to you. It also

seriously reduces stress and boosts clear thinking. Having a strong sense of self is heavily

reliant on one's internal state of mind. Finally, knowing when to say no is a good thing. The

people who are truly meant to be in your life will understand that nobody can always say

yes to everything. Limits and boundaries are good for the mind.

9
 Develop Your Hobbies and Interests!

Hobbies and interests are healthy, life-enriching activities. Not only do they reduce

stress, boost confidence, and combat boredom, but hobbies also allow each person to

discover more about who they are and what they like. Knowledge of self is critical to the

perception of oneself. After all, how can you know who you are if you don't know what you

enjoy doing in your spare time?

Hobbies are also great activities that can help you meet like-minded people who share

similar interests. This, too, helps one gain a strong sense of self. Friends, associates, and

other people with whom you share time with have a tremendous impact on how you do in

life and how you view yourself. The age-old old saying "you are as good as the company

you keep" remains truer than ever.

 Take Some Time for Yourself!

Believing in yourself, knowing how and when to say no, and discovering your hobbies

are all excellent ways to understand and gain a strong sense of self. However, one of the

least commonly discussed yet ironically obvious ways to gain a good perception of oneself

is having some alone time. This is not to be confused with self-isolation or cutting off family

members, friends, or co-workers, but from time to time, spending time alone is healthy and

greatly contributes to one's sense of identity as an individual.

Taking time for yourself is easier than it sounds. Occasional alone time can be as simple

as taking a walk in the park, working up a sweat at the gym, going to see a movie, or even

visiting a museum. Options are plentiful, and how you choose to take time for yourself

10
remains entirely up to you. However, getting a healthy dosage of solitude allows for self-

reflection, future planning, and a deeper understanding of life. Each of the aforesaid

individual activities will sharpen your self-perception while improving your quality of life.

Big Picture in Focus: ULOb. Identify and exhibit the attitudes and habits
appropriate for work

Metalanguage
For you to demonstrate ULOb, you are to examine your own work attitude and examine its inter-
relatedness to your current course. You will also identify how this attitude influences future career
development and success.

Essential Knowledge

Attitude to refers to the ‘feel’ part of the work. It relates to how you feel about your

work and your approach towards work. Hence, work attitude behaviour is intangible. You

cannot see it. Your colleagues cannot see it. But people can feel it. People whom you work

with can feel your work attitude behaviour.

Having the right attitudes to work is essential on the road to success and even after

success. Your attitude to work is your perceptions of, beliefs about and attachment to your

work. You can either have a positive or negative attitude toward work and for each kind,

there are examples. A positive attitude toward work will yield good results and a negative

attitude toward work will yield no results as opposed to bad results as people might think.

However, in work terms, no result is a bad result. Employee attitudes have

numerous effects. On the part of the employer or enforcer, it is your duty to provide an

environment whereby positive attitudes can thrive and on the part of the employee it is their

job to produce results and grow, for which they are paid to do and the only way to achieve

this is by having a positive attitude to work.

16
Five Attitudes That Are Important in Workplace

Respect for Others

Employees should also have a respectful attitude when interacting with clients and

customers as well as co-workers. Those with this type of attitude are willing to treat other

people politely and professionally, even if they disagree with the other person's point of

view.

Infectious Enthusiasm about Life

Someone who is enthusiastic about life in general radiates a positive energy that rubs off

on everyone around her. She dives into every project with interest, eagerly learns new skills

and ideas and quickly applies them to her work.

Commitment to the Job

Employees project a committed attitude by showing a willingness to do whatever it takes to

fulfil the duties of their positions and the development of new ideas to make the company

even better. When committed individuals work together as a team towards company goals,

everyone benefits.

17
Innovative Ideas and Finding New Ways

Employees with an innovative attitude don't shy away from trying something new or finding

a different way to do things. Employees with this type of attitude know their ideas might not

work out to be the best way to do something, but that the biggest failure is not at least giving

new ideas a shot.

Helpfulness with Others

It is important to have a helpful attitude at work, whether that means assisting clients and

customers with their needs or helping co-workers accomplish overall company goals. The

more helpful an attitude employees have, the more people want to be around them at work

and the more willing they are to partner with those employees on key projects and

initiatives.

Importance of Good Attitude at Work

Significance

Your attitude is a form of expression of yourself. You can choose to be happy, positive and

optimistic or you can choose to be pessimistic and critical with a negative outlook on your

workday. Research suggests that positive thinking and a good attitude help better your

psychological well-being and help you cope better under stressful situations at work.

18
Identification

Those employees who are committed to volunteering some of their extra time and are

appreciative, enthusiastic, kind and willing to help others and work overtime with a good

attitude are often recognized in the workplace, research explained.

Benefits

When you begin to display a positive attitude at work, you can expect to see benefits.

Reinforce with others the rewards of your goals and emphasize less on the negatives. This

will keep other employees, including yourself, motivated and on track.

Atmosphere

It can be trying for you to have a good attitude in the workplace when the atmosphere in

the workplace is negative, or other employees are unhappy. Suggest ways to increase

morale to your bosses. The key is to change the tone in the office to a positive one. This

helps to induce productivity and make employees feel better.

Effects

The Entrepreneur website explains that when you expect positive outcomes, you can turn

a bad circumstance into a new opportunity. Reacting with an attitude that you can learn

19
from the negative rather than give up or get mad will show that you are a team player and

someone who can bounce back from stress.

Activity 1: Check on your LMS Virtual Classroom, download and answer the attitude
survey provided for you. Answer it in two forms, (1) your response considering your work
attitude as student, (2) your response considering your attitude as a worker. Check and
interpret your own result. And answer the following:

1. How agreeable for you are your test results?

2. Does it truly reflect your knowledge of your own work attitude at school and at work
setting?
3. How might this help you in your future endeavour as an intern or as a freshgraduate?

Let’s Analyze

1. How do you feel about your work attitude survey? Was there a difference between your
school attitude and work attitude result? To what extent is the difference and what are
your thoughts about it?

Big Picture in Focus: ULOc. Explore appropriate role models with whom they
can identify

Metalanguage

For you to demonstrate ULOc, you are to examine your reflect on ppossible influences others have
had toward your behaviour and general characteristics. You will also identify particular situations
where these influences became beneficial and challenging for your sense of identity and self-
awareness.

Essential Knowledge
Girls often identify with other females as role models and copy behaviours, dress,

interests and hobbies. Boys do the same with other males. They often have difficulty finding

and relating to appropriate role models who can help them face the future with a positive,

healthy outlook. Furthermore, it can be difficult for them to find role models from diverse

backgrounds to whom they can relate. Everyone needs healthy role models who place

importance on friendship, responsibility, decision making, sports, academics, and

community service. Positive role models can help everyone deal with the many complex

issues and decisions that are an intrinsic part of growing up.

23
Self-Awareness & Role Modeling

“One of the best ways to elevate your character is to emulate worthy role models.” —

Epictetus

Role modeling is paradoxical — if you surround yourself with positive role models, you’ll

likely become an effective role model for others.

What Is a Role Model?

A role model is someone who does something really well and is worth imitating.

Others tend to look up to and admire them. We often select role models who excel in one or

more areas of their lives.

Think of a role model as the ideal person maybe they’re the best father we’ve ever

seen or the most patient and kind human being we’ve ever known. Our role models teach

us how to live better lives by being highly skilled at something, developing our knowledge,

or putting forth more effort. Role models help us become better versions of ourselves.

To help you create the life you deserve, use your listening and observational skills to

notice others who are living the kind of existence you desire. You might say that a role model

is an expert at being the type of person you hope to be.

One aspect of being a good leader and mentor is to cultivate self-awareness, which

is an understanding of one's strengths and weaknesses. It's important to utilize them and

move towards being better. For example, if a student knows that her communication skills

24
are not good, she can work on learning to be better at connecting with others. This will

make her a better communicator, but it will also model a growth mindset for the people she

manages; that is, a student will be a good role model because of her self-awareness about

communication.

According to self-awareness theory, objective self-awareness leads people to judge

their behaviour in terms of personal standards (Duval, Silvia, & Lalwani, 2001). The

evidence we reviewed shows that when people picture events in their lives, third-person

imagery leads people to understand those events in relation to the conceptual self, which

includes but is not limited to personal standards. Further, evidence we reviewed

demonstrates that perspective changes not only the evaluation of behaviour, but the

identification of the behaviour itself. This occurs whether the actor is the self or another

person, an effect that would not be directly predicted by self-awareness theory. When the

actor is the self, general self-knowledge appears to shape the abstraction that occurs with

third-person imagery, and thus shapes the meaning that results. It is possible that a

change in action identification explains the effects of self-awareness manipulations as

well.

A role model who excels at their profession.

Regardless of whether you’re a maintenance worker, an office manager, or a sales

person, it’s important to have someone who you can look up to in your chosen profession.

A role model doesn’t even have to be someone who works in your exact profession.

25
Maybe you’ve met someone you admire in your line of work when you attended a

seminar and saw them presenting a specific topic. Seeing their zest for their work, incredible

focus, and willingness to share their knowledge may have been very attractive to you.

Maybe at your office, there’s someone who’s worked in your field for many years and

seems to hold a passion for the type of work you do. You’ve endeavored to work as closely

as possible with them because you’re in awe of their approach to the job.

The advantages of having role models are great. Consistently having those you trust to

turn to in a crisis or teach you how to live a better life ensures you’ll make your own

contributions to the world. For these reasons and more, having role models is a key to a

happy and fulfilling life

Consider the reasons why it’s important to have role models:

You can choose whomever you want. The freedom of deciding who to emulate and which

qualities to reproduce in your own life is powerful. Who do you want to be like?

You’ll have someone to turn to for advice. Many role models are likely open and willing

to be contacted.

You can learn about how to solve challenges simply by observing others. It’s helpful

to see your role model “in action,” dealing with struggles, so you can see what they do.

26
It’s unnecessary to reinvent the wheel. Someone has likely already done what you desire

to accomplish. If you’ve selected your role models wisely, you can learn from how they were

able to excel.

When you admire and look up to someone, you’re sending out positive vibes. When

others realize you look up to and respect someone else, they’ll feel inspired themselves.

It makes your life easier. It relieves stress when you can call on someone in times of need.

You can be a better parent, an extra caring friend, and a more effective co-worker. It’s

within your power to live your best life. And having great role models will help you do it.

Big Picture

Week 1: Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO): At the end of the unit, you are better able to
understand your Work Values. Specifically you are expected to:

a. Increase awareness of personal work values that will assist you in

becoming productive individual;

Big Picture in Focus: ULOa. Increase awareness of personal work

values that will assist you in becoming
productive individual.

Metalanguage
In this section, the most essential terms relevant to self-confidence and to demonstrate
ULOa will be operationally defined to establish a common frame of reference as to how
the self-confidence affects individual’s appraisal of his/her skills, identity, and potential.

Essential Knowledge

According to Susa (2018), work values are coherent with one’s self-worth and
human needs. This determines how productive, satisfied, and fulfilled the person is with
his/her behaviour, especially in activities that he/she is doing (Graham & Abeysekera,
2019; as cited by Llenares, 2015). This values-system also determines the likelihood
that the individual will pursue the dreams he/she set for one’s self.

37
Dr. Vincnetita Cervera identified various factors that can be considered as
elements contributing to the values system of Filipino population. These factors becomes
the foundation of her instrument now known as Filipino Work Values Scale (FWVS).
Below are the Filipino Work Values Identifed by Dr. Cervera:
a. Environmental- Associated with work which is carried out under pleasant
physical conditions – not too hot nor too cold, noisy, dirty, crowded, not far from
where one lives
b. Familial- Related to the family – family cohesion, family unity, emotional
closeness and security in the family, firm loyalty to the family ties in activities,
family – oriented achievement motivation, respect for parents
c. Intellectual-Achievement Oriented- Associated with work which that provides
opportunity for independent thinking and for learning how and why things work,
and gives one a feeling of accomplishment in doing a job well.
d. Interpersonal- Related to persons – “amor propio, hiya, utang na loob”, use of
intermediaries or go – between, the value of loyalty, hospitality, pakikisama,
emotional closeness, respect for authority
e. Managerial- Related to work which involves the coordination of human and
material resources in order to accomplish the objectives of a work organization.
f. Material- Associated with work which enables one to gain prestige, security
and economic returns.
g. Occupational- Associated with work which enables one to gain prestige,
security and economic returns.
h. Organizational- Associated with work which enables one to gain prestige,
security and economic returns.
i. Religious- Associated with work which enables one to gain prestige, security
and economic returns.
j. Variety- Associated with work which enables one to gain prestige, security and
economic returns.

38
It should be noted that the strength and weaknesses pertinent to a specific work
values does not necessarily mean that it is a “weakness” or “strength” of potential. It only
determines what aspects of work, or activities you find satisfactory, thus making you more
productive and fulfilled.

In a study conducted by Llaneres (2015) which involves work values and human
resource management, it was found out that among the stipulated work values by Dr.
Cersera, Intellectual-achievement orientation is the most dominant one. This involves
appraisal of performance, training, and provision of independents and involvement with
work or specific activities. This means that as a Filipino worker in the future, and even as
a student, one becomes industrious by making them involve with the decisions made,
clear and specific evaluation of performance and what to improve, and delivery of specific
avenue to improve one’s potentials.

Productivity and fulfilment to what one is doing are considered to be related with
the value system that one holds significant for him/her. Thus, to become a competent
student or work-force, an individual must become aware of his/her own values system
and ensure that their behaviour and attitude are coherent with this values system (Susa,
2018).

In this section, the most essential terms relevant to self-confidence and to demonstrate
ULOa will be operationally defined to establish a common frame of reference as to how
the self-confidence affects individual’s appraisal of his/her skills, identity, and potential.

Essential Knowledge

40
Self-confidence is a skill that is needed by everyone. The 21st century demands

for soft skills at the workplace. Although people are appointed on the basis of their hard

skills, but soft skills are equally analysed. One very important soft skill that is necessary

yet ignored is self-confidence. Employees are often discouraged and de-motivated easily

in case of any crisis or even the smallest issue. And, once the morale of employees is

down, it takes lots of efforts and time to bring it back. Although we have already stated

above why self-confidence is important, let us understand in detail the benefits that it

brings with itself. One of which are it help reduces fear of taking up responsibilities, helps

in understanding that failures are a part of learning. Self-confidence brings with it self-

control.

Self-confident people are able to express themselves freely and create a lasting

impression on the minds of employers during job applications and interviews. With a high

level of self-confidence, a person is able to take independent but great decisions in an

organization or field of work no matter what the circumstance may be, there a few tips

that can help you maintain a good level of self-confidence.

Ambitious, athletic, artistic and altruistic. There are plenty more words that begin

with “A” that create a positive description of people we know or even of ourselves.

Self-confidence is an attitude about your skills and abilities. Self-confidence plays

a crucial role to boost self-esteem. To achieve our personal goals and make ourselves

happy we need to develop and maintain our confidence and self-esteem. It means you

accept and trust yourself and have a sense of control in your life. You know your strengths

41
and weakness well, and have a positive view of yourself. You set realistic expectations

and goals, communicate assertively, and can handle criticism.

On the other hand, low self-confidence might make you feel full of self-doubt, be

passive or submissive, or have difficulty trusting others. You may feel inferior, unloved, or

be sensitive to criticism. Feeling confident in yourself might depend on the situation. For

instance, you can feel very confident in some areas, such as academics, but lack

confidence in others, like relationships.

Having high or low self-confidence is rarely related to your actual abilities, and

mostly based on your perceptions. Perceptions are the way your think about yourself and

these thoughts can be flawed.

Low self-confidence might stem from different experiences, such as growing up in

an unsupportive and critical environment, being separated from your friends or family for

the first time, judging yourself too harshly, or being afraid of failure. People with low self-

confidence often have errors in their thinking.

How to Increase Your Self-Confidence?

 Recognize and emphasize your strengths. Reward and praise yourself for your

efforts and progress.

 When you stumble on an obstacle, treat yourself with kindness and compassion.

Don't dwell on failure.

42
 Set realistic and achievable goals. Do not expect perfection; it is impossible to be

perfect in every aspect of life.

 Slow down when you are feeling intense emotions and think logically about the

situation.

 Challenge making assumptions about yourself, people and situations.

 Recognize that past negative life experiences do not dictate your future.

 Express your feelings, beliefs and needs directly and respectfully

 Learn to say no to unreasonable requests

Carrying Yourself as a Confident Individual

You know when a confident person steps into the room. You can feel it. Her body

language emits strength, pride, and surety. Yet at the same time many suffer from

insecurity that takes its toll in little ways on the body. When people see someone who

appears frail and weak in his physical approach, it can transmit a lack of ambition and

power.

So many people focus on what they say as a way of projecting confidence, but for

many their words simply support perceptions of weakness and perhaps the results of the

"imposter effect." In fact, some people will best show their confidence and strength by

never uttering a word.

43
Whether or not you choose to stay silent is up to you, but either way these tips will

help you appear highly confident even on your most questionable days.

1. Keep your head up.

People who stare at their feet feel unapproachable because they have essentially closed

themselves off from talking to other people. Keep your head up and look around you.

People respect you if you are looking strong and straight ahead.

2. Sit up.

According to a study from Spain, slouching forward emits a feeling of doubt. Sitting up

straight with your chest out emits confidence to others, keeping you open to conversation

and poised.

3. Or stand up.

If others are standing over you, you look smaller and far weaker in the social context. So

simply stand up and meet people at their respective level. Don't do it half way. Stand tall,

even if you are only five foot five like me.

4. Have a firm grip.

You don't need to crush someone's hand to share your confident energy. But a soft and

limp handshake will put people off and make them question your resolve.

44
5. Make eye contact.

There is nothing worse than a person whose eyes constantly evade yours. You find

yourself asking, "Why is that person avoiding me? What is he hiding that he can't look me

straight in the eye?" Direct eye contact isn't easy for some, and it requires a sense of

timing or the eye contact becomes threatening or awkward. When you do it right, however,

it makes people feel connected and has been proved to be one of the most powerful tools

in the art of flirting.

6. Stay close.

People that stay far away from others transmit a sense of caution and fear. Those that

have no problem staying close to other people emit a sense of strength and confidence.

Of course, standing too close can be imposing. Make sure you allow people their personal

space.

7. Dress well.

People will often judge your state of mind by how you look and what you wear. If your hair

is a disaster, your attire doesn't match, and the shoes you are wearing are dirty, people

will think you don't think enough of yourself. Walk in wearing your best and smelling your

best, so people can feel the confidence brewing

8. Have a great gait.

45
If you trudge along, people will notice your lack of enthusiasm. Of if you rush about

frantically, they will sense your anxiety. Let your gait express a sense of freedom and

graceful movement.

9. Pay attention.

Looking distracted is distracting to both the distracted and the others in the conversation.

Keep focused on the conversation and participate when appropriate. If it looks like your

thoughts are elsewhere, you will appear as though you have little self-control.

10. Smile!

Cranky people are perceived as unhappy and dissatisfied. At the end of the day, there

is no stronger indicator of joy and confident energy than a smile. Smiles make

everyone feel better, and they also brighten our own days even when our insides are

in deep question. Share the best parts of you, and never let them see you frown.

Building Self-esteem and Relationship

Positive self-esteem is critical to an individual’s mental health and ability to relate well

to others. By strengthening one’s self-esteem, one will increase contentment in

relationships and, as a result, the emotional health of all family members. The paradox of

46
healthy self-esteem is that we need someone else to validate ourselves as worthy. It

must always be grounded in a social context—in a relationship” (Bradshaw, 1996).

Once one accepts the importance of self-esteem to relationships and vice-versa, it

makes sense to put conscious effort into building or strengthening both our own self-

esteem and that of our significant other. The following are a few suggestions for

increasing relationship contentment and stability by building positive self-esteem.

1. Avoid criticizing, blaming, and shaming.

2. Accept the other person as they are; don’t try to change them.

3. Offer genuine praise and appreciation for the traits that you value in each

other.

4. Avoid perfectionism in yourself and in others. Accept mistakes as part of

humanity.

Week 2: Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO): At the end of the unit, you are better able to
understand Decision-Making. Specifically you are expected to:

a. Learn decision making strategy that will help improve the quality of
the choices you make;

49
b. Discover how the choices, we make as individuals can affect others.

Big Picture in Focus: ULOa. Learn decision making strategy that

will help improve the quality of the
choices you make.

Metalanguage
The most essential terms below are operationally defined for you to have a better
understanding of this section in the course.

1. Values. Intrinsic belief system that one holds and influences his/her attitude and
behaviour.

2. Experience. The over-all experience of an individual through time which can

influence his/her decision-making strategy.

3. Common Sense. Are things that ordinarily observed by individuals and thus
became a benchmark or future references for decisions.

Essential Knowledge

It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the fact that nowadays students have

numerous options for degree selection and a better chance to choose their favourite

career. In this matter, it is very important to have a deep understanding of students’

preferences and their decision-making process and the key step to achieving this

understanding can be recognizing those factors that influence this process.

People are needed who have the ability to make decisions quickly and responsibly.

This is why it is so important for the students to learn good decision making skills. In order

to do this, students must understand the importance of decision making. Most decisions

50
are made without any idea of the decision-making principles. With better decision-making

skills, the percentage of correct decisions would undoubtedly rise.

Here are the ways to teach the importance of good decisions:

1. Problem solving vs. decision making

2. Characteristics of good decision makers

3. The three most important criteria for good decision making

4. Brings value

5. Move forward without worry

Problem solving vs. decision making

First, students should understand that problem solving and decision making are two

separate things. Problem solving means being forced to make a decision because of

conditions beyond your control. Decision making means choosing to make a decision

because you wish for something to occur that is not occurring at the present time.

Decision making occurs because you want something to happen, while problem solving

occurs when a problem arises.

Characteristics of good decision makers

The best decision makers are people who can combine logic, problem analysis, and

intuition to come up with the correct decision.

 Being a good listener. Good decision makers must be able to hear and take into

account other people’s opinions when making decisions.

51
 Having a clear set of priorities. As we will discuss later on in this unit, decision

makers must know their priorities or values in order to choose a good or “correct”

path.

 Having an open mind. Good decision makers are open to other people’s views and

ways of thinking rather than being stuck in one way of doing things.

 Being flexible and willing to change. A good decision maker is open to new or

alternative ways of doing things that may work out better in the end

 Being realistic. Good decision makers understand the realistic outcomes to which

different paths will lead.

The three most important criteria for good decision making

The three most important criteria for good decision making are values, experience and

common sense:

1. Values- What your student’s value determines their behavior. Their beliefs

produce attitudes, attitudes produce feelings and feelings lead to behavior.

2. Experience– We all learn to make decisions through experience. Time will tell if a

decision is good or bad.

3. Common sense- Common sense, or what you know, is a key component in

choosing one path versus another. Use what you know to help you make the best

decision.

Brings value

52
Good decision making is an essential skill. When your students improve their decision-

making skills, they will increase their value in their future jobs, families and communities.

Move forward without worry

Decision making involves making choices. Many people are afraid to make decisions

because they may make a wrong one. Good decision making does not depend on

educational background as much as common sense. That common sense, general

knowledge, and their value systems are the most important criteria for good decision

making.

Decision making is a necessary skill that a person should have. Many of us makes

decisions based on our own perception but some of us make decision that are influenced

by others opinion. Of course we have to make right decision but it’s not always being the

right or being wrong. Sometimes we have to consider how we should respond to every

wrong decision we made.

Problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential. Oftentimes, problem

solving and decision-making go hand-in-hand.

Importance of problem-solving and decision-making:

1. Review situations carefully

2. Openly discuss problems and solutions

3. Organize ideas

4. Predict consequences of decisions

53
5. Weigh alternatives

6. Create plans of action

Steps for decision-making and problem-solving

Use the five steps below to guide yourself through a problem and decide on a solution.

1. Analyse the problem

Determine whether or not the problem needs immediate action. How urgent is the issue?

How long will it take to fix the problem? The severity of the issue determines how quickly

you respond and what steps you must take.

2. Gather information

After you determine and analyse the intensity of the problem, gather supporting

information. Depending on the issue, the type of information you gather may vary. Think

about what reports to use to further analyse the problem and back up your claims.

3. Brainstorm solutions.

Don’t be afraid to ask others for their input. The more ideas you have, the more likely you

can find a viable solution to your problem. Think back to previous problems you had. Were

they similar to the current issue? If so, how did you resolve the other problems? When

generating solutions, think outside of the box. The solutions you and your team use don’t

have to be the same methods you have used in the past.

54
4. Weigh pros and cons

One main component of effective problem-solving and decision-making is weighing your

pros and cons before making any decisions. Consider giving each solution a score based

on the number of pros and cons. List your solutions by point value to rank which option

might be the best route. Keep in mind you don’t necessarily have to choose the option

with the highest ranking.

5. Decide on a solution

After evaluating all possible solutions, it’s time to make a decision. When making a

decision, consider a few things such as:

 Amount of risk

 Possible outcomes (short- and long-term)

 Negative side effects (e.g., other problems)

 Likeliness of success

Five Ways to Make Tough Decisions

A. THE BASICS

1. Book time to think. Decision making is a task, and it deserves more

attention than what you can devote to it when you wake up late at night worrying

about that urgent issue you still haven’t resolved.

55
2. Define the decision. Before delving into deciding, get clear on the nature

of the choice you’re making. Defining the key factors that both go into and will

be affected by your decision helps you quickly discern whether (and why) you’re

excited about a particular option.

3. Think through your options. Instead of limiting yourself to a “yes” or

“no” choice, brainstorm all the possible options before making a decision, you

may find compromises and alternatives that weren’t easy to see initially. In fact,

consider, too, whether you actually need to make a decision. In some cases, it’s

fine to simply let a choice pass by without committing either way.

Here are five great options, each suited to different situations and personality types

1. FALL BACK ON YOUR VALUES

Having clear values that you try to live by can make tough decisions easier. For

example, maybe you know there’s a certain amount of time you want to spend with

your family, or a baseline level of debt you’re willing to carry.

2. TALK IT THROUGH

You just need a good listener who’ll give you time and space to hear out your

monologue and occasionally reflect back to you what you’ve shared.

3. ASK FOR PERSPECTIVE

56
Asking someone else for their opinion typically works best when you’re

considering doing something that you’ve never done before, and when you know

someone who’s experienced in that domain. Just be careful not to blindly accept

advice.

4. TEST IT OUT FIRST

In those moments when you’re exposing yourself to a new experience, your body

tends to signal to you whether an unfamiliar situation “feels right” or just “feels off.”

5. LISTEN TO YOUR HOPES

When you’re really struggling with a decision, it’s often because your mind thinks

one thing is practical while your heart wants something else. Pay attention to what

you hope will happen. Its right (and good!) to listen to your hopes because they often

give you deeper insight into the decisions you actually want to make.

Life is full of tough choices, but they don’t need to be massive drains on your time. Lay

a strong foundation to make decisions generally, then pick and choose from these five

tactics to make them faster. You’ll spend less time agonizing over your decisions

without making slapdash choices you’ll later regret.

David is a student in a school district where his mother is on the school
board. Recently, three of his classmates posted a web site that openly attacks
some of the teachers and students, using explicit and offensive language. It
even goes as far as predicting which gay students will be the first to die of AIDS.
Remarks about several teachers are scathing, suggesting that one fantasizes
about having sex with young girls and that two married teachers are having an
affair. The site includes disgusting graphics.

Several weeks ago David learned the identities of the three students who
created the website when one of them accidentally said something to him in a
conversation. The other two quickly corralled David and pressured him not to
reveal their names. He agreed, not thinking much about it at the time. David used
to be close to one of the three students, but that friendship has faded.
Now, the school principal has obtained a program that allows him to identify each
person who has visited the website. He is asking students to come forward with
the names of the creators of the site, and if no one does, he is going to question
each student who visited the site. David is one of those who did visit the site. He
realizes he may be the only student who knows the names of the three kids
who created the site. He can lie and say he doesn’t know, or he can break his
promise not to tell.

David has always thought of himself as an ethical person with a pretty clear
sense of right and wrong. Right now, however, he feels that either choice will end
in disaster. What should David do?

Big Picture in Focus: ULOb. Discover how the choices, we make

as individuals can affect others.

Metalanguage
For you to demonstrate ULOb, you are to examine the impact that your decisions and choices
have toward the people surrounding you. You will also be operationally defining the influences
of emotions on everyday decisions that you make.

Essential Knowledge

At times, a choice may primarily affect the person who makes it, but never

exclusively. Every choice a person makes, large or small, from how time is spent to which

career to pursue, will have an effect on another person. It could be a seemingly miniscule

repercussion or one large enough to change everything. Regardless of the degree,

someone is always affected by the choices of others. It is impossible to avoid. Because

of this, decisions should not be handled with indifference towards the influence they could

have in the lives of others. Rather they should be valued for this very reason.

There is an attitude in many people today that promotes making choices with little

to no regard for others. It is not selfishness, but more self-centeredness through

ignorance. The individualism-obsessed culture seen today encourages people to only

62
think of themselves when it comes to decisions and not to worry about how it might involve

someone else. It is applauded when people say they are living life for themselves.

Sometimes this is appropriate, but not always. The “I’m just doing me” attitude does not

work consistently because the truth is that other people are involved. Lives are interlaced

in millions of different ways, and there is no way to escape the influence one has on

others. Even attempting to escape it has influence.

This does not mean that choices should be made without giving thought to oneself.

There are definitely times when it is necessary to make a self-centered choice. It does

not necessarily make someone a selfish person.

There are decisions that are appropriate to be selfish about, but it is still true that

they affect others. Where a person attends college affects parents, guardians, siblings,

employers, high school friends, as well as the people who will be met during college such

as roommates, classmates, potential friends, etc. And this is just a brief list. Despite this,

making a decision completely based on one’s personal interest can still be appropriate

and beneficial.

Sometimes decisions should be made with the best interest of self in mind, but

while accepting and understanding that it will play a part in the lives of others too. Other

times, decisions should be made while thinking of others’ needs. Though difficult, it is

beneficial to consider others’ and think less of oneself. Acknowledging that each choice

made will affect another person is a valuable way to live, and not only with the big things,

but with small decisions too. Choices matter, people matter and when there is awareness

of the influence a choice can have, there are better outcomes.

63
How Positive Emotions Help Us

Positive emotions balance out negative ones, but they have other powerful benefits, too.

Instead of narrowing our focus like negative emotions do, positive emotions affect our

brains in ways that increase our awareness, attention, and memory. They help us take in

more information, hold several ideas in mind at once, and understand how different ideas

relate to each other.

People who have plenty of positive emotions in their everyday lives tend to be happier,

healthier, learn better, and get along well with others.

How Negative Emotions Help Us

Negative emotions warn us of threats or challenges that we may need to deal with.

Negative emotions focus our awareness. They help us to zero in on a problem so we can

deal with it. But too many negative emotions can make us feel overwhelmed, anxious,

exhausted, or stressed out. When negative emotions are out of balance, problems might

seem too big to handle. The more we dwell on negative emotions, the more negative we

begin to feel. Focusing on negativity just keeps it going.

The Importance of Positive Emotions

Science is helping us find out how valuable positive emotions can be. Here are two

findings that can help us use positive emotions to our advantage:

64
1. Let Positive Emotions Outnumber Negative Ones

When we feel more positive emotions than negative ones, difficult situations are easier to

handle. Positive emotions build our resilience (the emotional resources needed for

coping). Studies show that people feel and do their best when they have at least three

times as many positive emotions as negative emotions. That's because of something

called the negativity bias. The negativity bias is a natural human tendency to pay more

attention to negative emotions than to positive ones. It makes sense when you think about

it: Negative emotions call our attention to problems we might need to deal with quickly.

Tuning in to negative emotions can be a survival mechanism.

2. Practice Positivity Every Day

Building habits that encourage us to feel more positive emotions can help us be happier,

do better, and reduce our negative emotions. Building positive emotions is especially

important if we're already dealing with a lot of negative feelings such as fear, sadness,

anger, frustration, or stress.

Building a daily positivity habit is pretty simple. It comes down to two basic steps:

a. Notice and name your positive emotions. Start by simply focusing on your

feelings. You can tune in to your emotions in real time, as they happen. Or take

stock at the end of the day, noting how you felt in different situations.

65
b. Pick an emotion and act to increase it. Let's say you choose confidence: What

helps you feel confident? How can you get more of that feeling? Positive emotions

feel good, and they're good for you. Pay attention to these powerful tools and find

ways to make time for them in your everyday life. Create room in your day for joy,

fun, friendship, relaxation, gratitude, and kindness. Make these things a habit and

you positively will be a happier you.

Let’s Check
Activity 1. Decision-making is partially influenced by emotions that one sets in a given situation.
It either propels us to create a choice or prevent us to do so. With this in mind, provide your
answer on the following:

1. Is it easier to think of situations that held negative consequences or positive rewards?

Why?
2. Do you think about the possible outcomes before you act? Or do you act first and then
worry about the consequences later?

Let’s Analyze
Activity 1. In this part, you are once again required to elaborate thoroughly your answer on the
questions below:

1. Remember a specific moment in your life where you are contained with so much
emotions that you felt you are going to explode? What had brought you to that situation?
What happened during that time? How did you manage yourself back then? What
important learning have you acquired out of that experience?
