PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Any liquid aerosol content will be removed from NGL Feed gas by Inlet Separator (1201V-001) which is a vertical vessel that has mist eliminator at
the top. Mist eliminator is provided for the separator with a removal efficiency of 99% droplets to ensure supply of dry NGL Feed gas to Mercury
Removal Package (1201PK-001).
The liquid level inside the separator is controlled by ON/OFF Level controller (LC-0002) to drain off any excess oily water to Degassing Drum.
NGL Inlet Separator features two trains. The above system sketch is for Train 1 only and the corresponding Train 2 configuration is identical with
the exception that train number 1201 is replaced with train number 1202.

REASON FOR OVERPRESSURE / NO OVERPRESSURE

S.NO. CONTINGENCY APPLICABLE
(For detailed justification refer to notes)
1a. CLOSED (BLOCKED) OUTLET No Blockage of mist eliminator within 1201V-001 or any isolation valve on discharge can block gas flow
Vapour to 1201PK-001 however this will not overpressure the vessel because Inlet Separator has the same
design conditions (DP=92.7 barg) as the source pressure (Ref. 1,2). No overpressure scenario.
Lean Gas stream from 1351K-001A/B will only be used for start-up & system dry-out via a closed
loop circuit, so no overpressure will occur on a blocked outlet as the LG Compressor will lose
suction. During normal operation the Lean Gas line is NNF & blinded, so no potential for
overpressuring the system.
1b. CLOSED (BLOCKED) OUTLET No Inadvertent closure of liquid drain outlet from the separator would slowely increase liquid level in the
Liquid separator. This will not overpressure the separator rather liquid carry-over with NGL Feed Gas to
1201PK-001. No overpressure scenario
1c. REVERSE FLOW No N/A - No other high pressure sources are identified that can overpressure the separator as a result
of reverse flow.

2. COOLING WATER FAILURE No N/A - No cooling water in the system.

3. REFLUX OR PUMPAROUND No N/A - No reflux nor pumparound in the system.

FAILURE

4. SIDESTREAM REFLUX FAILURE No N/A - No side-stream reflux in the system.

5. FAILURE OF ABSORBENT MEDIUM No N/A - No absorbent medium in the system.

6. ACCUMULATION OF No N/A
NON-CONDENSIBLES

7. ENTRY OF VOLATILE MATERIAL No N/A

8. LIQUID OVERFILL No N/A - Refer to Contingeny.1b (Closed Outlet Liquid).

Process or Storage/Surge Vessels

9. CONTROL VALVE FAILURE No LV-0002 fails open: It will allow more liquid drain flow with potential hazard of gas break-through to
Open or Closed Degassing Drum (1201V-002). There is SIF interlock (UY-0001) in the design to protect against gas
break-through to Degassing Drum. No overpressure scenario to the separator.
LV-0002 fails Closed: The liquid level in the separator will build up. This will not overpressure the
separator rather liquid carry-over with NGL Feed gas will occur.
Refer to Contingeny.1b (Closed Outlet Liquid).
10. ABNORMAL PROCESS HEAT No N/A - No process heat source in the system.
INPUT

11. EXCHANGER TUBE RUPTURE No N/A

12. INTERNAL EXPLOSION No N/A

(Excluding Detonation)

13. CHEMICAL REACTION No N/A

14. THERMAL EXPANSION No N/A

15a. FIRE Yes Fire case scenario is applicable to 1201V-001 because it is located on grade (Ref. 3,4) so it is
Vessel with Partial Liquid Inventory enveloped in the fire zone. The separator is partially liquid wetted at the bottom.

15b. FIRE Yes This case might be applicable to 1201V-001 assuming NGL Feed Gas is normally dry and no liquid
Vessel Filled with Gas (No Liquid) collected at the bottom of the separator.

15c. FIRE No N/A - Inlet Separator is not filled with liquid.

Vessel Filled with Liquid

16. POWER FAILURE No N/A - No rotating equipment in the system.

In case of general power failure, this will ultimately result in NGL Unit shutdown. No overpressure
scenario.
17. INSTRUMENT AIR FAILURE No In case of general IA failure, this will ultimately result in all Air Actuated valves moving to their safe
failure position simultaneously; LV-0002 to fail close, UV-0001 to fail close. (Dwg. 2)
Also on IA failure, UV-8001A/B on NGL Feed Gas will fail close stopping the gas supply to 1201V-
001 so no overpressure scenario. (Dwg. 3)
18. STEAM FAILURE No N/A - No steam in the system.

19. FUEL GAS FAILURE No N/A - No fuel gas in the system.

20. INERT GAS FAILURE No There is a Nitrogen Purge connection to the separator (Dwg. 2) however it is not hard piped, and the
design pressure of N2 system (11 barg, BEDD) is lower than PSV set pressure (DP=92.7 barg) so
no overpressure scenario.

BASIS OF CALCULATION Pressure Unit bar
To calculate the vapour relief rate from a partially filled liquid vessel or vessels connected within the same fire zone. The individual wetted areas
and the latent heat of vapourisation of the liquids are used to calculate the relieving mass flowrate assuming liquid levels provide sufficient liquid
disengagement, otherwise consideration is given to liquid expansion relief rate using FireLiqFull calculation.

1. Value for Ideal Gas Specific Heat Ratio at Relieving Temperature
2. For Horizontal vessels, the Cylinder Wetted Area is inclusive of both the heads.
3. It is assumed that Inlet Separator has adequate Drainage and Fire Fighting facilities (New Plant).
4. Inlet Separator BTL elevation is assumed to be 3.125 m above grade considering minimum elevation requirement for piping (1.0 m) and Hemi-
spherical vessel head of radius (2.125 m).
5. To determine Latent Heat of Vapourization, the Separator contained liquid (mainly water + hydrocarbon traces) is considered. Assumption is made
that the stream composition is mainly water with negligible traces of hydrocarbon materials.

REFERENCES / NOTES
1. Value for Ideal Gas Specific Heat Ratio at Relieving Temperature
2. For Horizontal vessels, the Cylinder Wetted Area is inclusive of both the heads.
3. Inlet Separator BTL elevation is assumed to be 3.125 m above grade considering minimum elevation requirement for piping (1.0 m) and Hemi-
spherical vessel head of radius (2.125 m).
4. Vessel thickness (t) is assumed to be 6" (152.4mm) with Corrosion Allowance (CA) of 3.0mm so Dve= Dvi + 2*(t + CA) = Dvi + 0.311m.
Vessel Internal Diameter = 4.25 m (Ref.1), so Dve= 4.25 + 0.311 = 4.561m.
