● What does Canadian law say about MAID?

Before the year 2015 MAID was not prohibited but because of the case Carter V. Canada the
supreme court ruled that parts of the criminal could be needed to be changed in order to
satisfy the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms. The Supreme court of Canada gave the
government up until June 6, 2016, in order to create a new law that would prohibit medical
assistance in death. In June 2016 the parliament of Canada passed legislation that would
allow citizens to request medical assistance in death, after 5 years during the year 2021 the
parliament decided to make important changes to who would be eligible for MAID and the
process of assessment by passing newly revised legislation.

● What are the primary ethical considerations that support the

provision of MAID?

Even when the legal conditions for MAiD are met, the practice of assisted dying creates
significant ethical issues for patients which I believe supports the provisions made which are
Suffering and death, autonomy and dignity, suffering can be a traumatic experience not only
physically but mentally as well and undergoing certain condition because of what you might
be going through can cause people to want to do the unthinkable which in some cases
people would feel at rest if they were able to end what they are going through at the
moment. Secondly would be anatomy which is the freedom of being able to choose what we
want to do with our bodies if this is someone's decision we must respect it as it's their own
body, not ours. lastly, we have personal dignity which includes a person’s value, worthiness,
self-esteem, or pride, patients may begin to feel their dignity to be threatened if they lose
their ability to perform regular tasks of daily living or feel their loss of independence or
identity as they feel they might become a burden to others with their care.

● What are the primary ethical considerations that challenge the

provision of MAID?

There are a couple of ethical considerations that challenge the provisions of MAID which I
would like to speak on, firstly the perception of suffering many people who want to undergo
MAID. it may be thought that MAID can be inappropriately influenced by pain, it's true many
people may be undergoing situations where the pain is very intense although there are many
healthcare options and alternatives which can be something rather than MAID. a big ethical
consideration that challenges the provisions of MAID is physical and moral integrity, then a
healthcare professional may believe that they have violated an individual’s basic human
dignity by ending their life which can be looked at as something very wrong by many
healthcare professionals.

● How might MAID change the relationship between physician

and patient, how it might relate to the ultimate goals of
medicine, and influence the dynamics of healthcare teams?

I believe maid can change the relationship between physician and patient in different
ways as medical professionals/physicians see the goals of medicine from different
perspectives, these differences can create different perspectives on if MAID should
be offered as well as the various ways it should be administered and legislated.
physicians worry that MAID might take away the power medical professionals have
as they feel it will undermine their clinical judgment. The way physicians construct the
relationship is also very important because a physician is the only person responsible
for a specific patient and must recognize the importance of caring for the patient as it
may support the decision making for the patient which possibly may reconsider
MAID.

● What are your personal, cultural, religious, moral values and

how do you feel about MAID? If your family was faced with the
choice of MAID, what are you prepared/ willing to do or not do?

My personal religious, moral, and cultural values may be different than what many
professional physicians believe as I a strong believer in Allah (God) have been taught
things that may go against the reasons why MAID should be prohibited. As an
Islamic follower, it is said in our religion that any way of suicide medically assisted or
done alone is considered a sin as the only way you should be taken from this world is
by the judgment of Allah, as a human being I do understand that there is a lot of
considerations to why one person may want to undergo MAID but Allah has great
power to alter someone's life and there are various unexplainable things that have
happened in this world and what's to say someone will not be cured. I don't believe
suicide should be an option for a person undergoing any sort of symptom as there
are always options and hope out there in the world. In my family, if we were faced
with the option of MAID I believe my family would not consider that route as I
mentioned we believe it's a sin and a sin that's considered very bad.
