Abstract
We live in a generation where diseases have reached such an unprecedented level.Diseases are so much that the greatest
worry for many people should be their health. Lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular ailments and blood pressure are
becoming more prevalent.Cardiovascular diseases are some of the leading causes of deaths in world. Heart beat and
blood pressure readings are by far the best parameters that could promote early detection of cardiacevents. By using this
system that we are proposing, we can measure ones heart rate through fingertip. The number of patients is also
increasing exponentially, bringing a tremendous challenge to health resources in our country Ethiopia where they have
never Been enough.
In this project, a wireless communication system is designed and developed for patient monitoring. The
main objective of this project is to monitor the temperature of a patient’s body, heart beat and display the
same to the doctor through wireless communication using Arduino, GSM module and health condition
sensing sensors.
In hospitals, where patient’s body temperature needs to be constantly monitored, is usually done by a
doctor or other paramedical staff by constantly observing the temperature and maintaining a record of it.
It is a very tedious method. In this project transmitting module continuously reads patient’s body
temperature through a digital temperature sensor, displays it on the LCD screen and sends it to the
Arduino which transmits the encoded serial data over GSM module. The receiver module is kept in the
doctor’s chamber to receive patient’s health status. This project can be further enhanced by sensing and
displaying other vital statistics of a patient like blood pressure, pulse rate, weight, age etc. Another feature
can be added where a warning signal is generated if the parameters cross the safe limit.

Chapter 1

Introduction

The project contains the brief description about the need for wireless patient monitoring system and its importance. It
also gives the brief description about scope of the project and design methodology. Patient Monitoring System is a
process where a health professional can continuously monitor more than one patient at a time in remote place.

Background Information

Telemedicine is a filled that did not begin yesterday. There has been a lot of development behind this field. As with all
other fields, technology plays a very big role as it eases the burdenon health officials, reduces the cost of treatment,
surveillance and diagnosis of patients. Patient monitoring systems are already being used in hospitals among other
places. However, their costs are prohibitive and hospitals in third world countries like Ethiopia can barely have them.
This means someone will always have to be there to watch over a patient whether in the hospital or at home. The
proposed patient monitoring system would be beneficial for medical practitioners to do proper and better treatment. It is
also beneficial to relatives or guardians who have are taking care of the sick. As We have stated, the signals are
transferred from the Arduino to the health personnel in the hospital or to a relative for a case of patient at home. Our
project is thus to create an affordable prototype of heart beat and temperature monitor. It will use Arduino
atmega256,GSM module, LCD display, temperature sensor and heart beat sensor. The Arduino is programmed to know
when there is an abnormality in the parameters and also to send the signals as a SMS. The buzzer should go on
whenever the parameters go below or  beyond acceptable limits.
We plan to both simulate and fabricate this project so that the end result becomes a comprehensive system. Softwares
that we will use are the Arduino software, matlab and circuitwizard. Bulk of simulation will be done with Matlab while
circuit wizard shall be majorly for drawing.

1.1 Statement of the Problem

In today's human social life patients who stays in home during post operational days checking is
done through medical caretaker. Continuously observing may not be accomplished by this
system. So automatic wireless health monitoring system provides a new modern health
awareness framework, time to time constant checking of the patient is accomplished and life can
be saved.

CHAPTER 2
2 Literature Review

To accomplish this project we review different literatures about health monitoring and wireless
technology principles, some of the literatures that we review in the area of health monitoring
systems by Purnima et al. [1] proposed health monitoring systems based on GSM & Zigbee
technology. In this ECG, temperature & heart beat signals are continuously transmitted &
monitored through Zigbee. A Zigbee node was connected to every patient monitoring system.
The data are transmitted to the doctors PC via Zigbee as well as GSM technology is used to send
data to doctor’s mobile. Verma et al. [2] developed a wireless system that allows patients to
measure their won vital signs, such as heart rate & temperature. Health professionals could also
remotely monitor patient’s vital parameters through messages sent by GSM along with date &
time, patient’s location, name of the patient. The patient’s location was given by the PS.
Singh et al. [9] proposed wireless transmission system which is having a wireless sensor
platform along with remote monitoring capability. They have designed sensor nodes for
temperature & heart rate. This sensor data are wirelessly transmitted to the controller using RF
transmitter & receiver module. This data is also wirelessly transmitted to the remote monitoring
station. Verma et al. [12] developed a wireless system that allows patients to measure their won
vital signs, such as heart rate & temperature. Health professionals could also remotely monitor
patient’s vital parameters through messages sent by GSM along with date & time, patient’s
location, name of the patient.

3.2 Methodology
Introduction
Methodology describes the method which will be used to implement this project. This project is divided into two main
parts which are hardware design and software design. for the hardware design, it is focus on the main controller
hardware, Arduino uno board which connects to the heart rate sensor and temperature sensor (LM 35) Meanwhile, for
the software design, Arduino and Matlab are used.

Hard Ware design

Arduino Uno board
Arduino Uno board is the main function system in this project because it reads and interprets the data from the heart rate
and the temperature sensor outputs. Arduino software is downloaded directly through the internet from the Arduino
main page in order to build a specific programmed. Arduino needs a USB cable to power up the board in 5V Execess
power will cause irreparable damage to the Arduino board.

Temperature Sensor Circuit

Body temperature circuit is to measure the body temperature of patient. The normal temperature for human is 37 degree
Celsius. Temperature sensor contains three pins that are connected directly to the Arduino Uno board. They are 5v GND
and analog output pins. 0ther common sensors used for temperature measuring are thermistors, thermocouples and
resistance thermometers but LM 35 is used because it can measure temperature more accurately than the others and
generates a higher output voltage than thermocouples. LM 35 sensor may not require that the output voltage be
amplified. The LM 35 is an integrated circuit sensor. Its electrical output signal is proportional to the temperature in
degree Celsius temperature.
GSM Module
This is interfaced with the Arduino Uno to transfer the processed signal to a doctor, a nurse or a relative via GSM
module.
Heart Beat sensor
This shall read the heart rate which is then processed by the processor and displayed on LCD display and sent out
through GSM module
For successful completion of this project some steps will be followed to carry out different tasks.
Different literature will be revised relating to this project and data will be collected about
condition and control parameter. Based on this parameter system model will designed. Some
software's were selected to develop the software programming.

3.3.1.1 Arduino Uno

The Uno is a micro controller board based on the ATmega328P .It has 24 digital input/output
pins(of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs) 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz quartz crystal, a USB
connection, a power supply an ICSP header and a reset button. It contains everything needed to
support the microcontroller. It is simply connected to the computer using a USB cable or
powered with an AC to DC adapter or battery to get it started.

3.3.1.3 Temperature sensor

The LM 35 series are precision integrated -circuit temperature devices with an output voltage linearly- proportional to
the Centigrade temperature. The LM 35 device has an advantage over linear temperature sensors calibrated in Kelvin, as
the user is not required to subtract a large constant voltage from the output to obtain convenient Centigrade scaling. The
LM 35 device does not require any enternal calibration or trimming to provide typical accuracies of +_ 0.25 degree
celcius at room temperature and +_ 0.75 degree celcius over a full -55 degree celcius to 150 degree celcius to 0.1
degree celcius temperature range. Lower cost is assured by trimming and calibration at the wafer level. The low-output
impedance, linear output and precise inherent calibration of the LM 35 device ma)es interfacing to readout or control
circuitry especially easy. The device is used with single power supplies, or with plus and minus supplies.&s the LM
35device draws only 60 micro ohm from the supply, it has very low self -heating of less than 0.1 degree celcius in still
air.The LM 35 device is rated to operate over a -55 degree celcius to 150 degree celcius temperature range which is fine
for measuring body temperature

3.3.1.4 Heart Beat Sensor

Electrocardiograph is one of the most ubiquitous machines in
the hospitals today. It keeps doctors and nurses updated on
important status of patients.ECG collects and interprets
electrical signals produced by the heart over time. Capturing
these signals is done via electrodes.& heart beat sensor shall
be used to replace the ECG machine
optical method uses the fact that blood vessels in any patch of
skin such as fingertips furnished with a good blood supply,
alternately expand and contract in time with the heartbeat.
A LED and a photo resistor are used to sense this variation in
s)in contrast. This method uses both transmittance and
reflectance principles. It is precise, cheap and non-invasive
method due to lac) of attachment on the body.

3.3.2 SOFTWARE COMPONENT

3.3.2.1 Proteus Software
Proteus 8 is a best simulation software for various designs with micro controller. It is mainly
popular because of availability of almost all micro controllers in it. So it is a handy tool to test
programs and embedded designs for electronics hobbyist. You can simulate your programming
of microcontroller in Proteus 8 Simulation Software.
After simulating your circuit in Proteus 8 Software you can directly make PCB design with it so
it could be all in one package for students and hobbyists. So I think now you have a little bit idea
about what is proteus software.
3.3.2.2 Arduino Software
The Arduino Uno can be programmed with the Arduino software.
