Introduction
In the context of carrying out the work, will address the main theme Solid waste
management that will culminate with the mapping in a participatory way of the production
sites and packaging of urban solid waste, the description of in the hulene dump. One of the
major problems currently being faced by governments in the three governmental instances
is the management of urban solid waste - MSW. The guarantees of cleanliness and public
health, in addition to the preservation of the environment, result from a waste management
system that requires adequate spaces, specific equipment and that involve people in various
activities, the city of Maputo, capital of Mozambique. The study will present a comparative
analysis of urban solid waste management actions used in these two locations. This is a
bibliographic and documental research, which seeks to better understand the form of solid
waste management, both in the legal aspect, as in management, application and planning in
the mentioned municipality.
Hulene regional framework
The hulene dump is located in the hulene B neighborhood, which is in the KaMavota
Municipal District, in the city of Maputo, Maputo Province and in the Country
Mozambique. Hulene dump was created in 1970, according to Cáritas (2006), and occupies
approximately 2 km². The Hulene neighborhood has 130 blocks and an estimated
population of 45,390 inhabitants. Most of the houses in the neighborhood are unfinished
because their residents are in extreme poverty.

problem description
The closure of the Hulene dump, almost all phases of the Solid Waste management system
from generation to final disposal are far from what is intended. For the final disposal of
solid waste, the municipality uses the open dump, although this measure is currently not
recommended considering the environmental impacts. The management of urban solid
waste must be integrated, and must include stages articulated with each other, from
generation to final disposal, with activities compatible with those of other environmental
sanitation systems, with the active and cooperative participation of the public and private
sectors being essential and general population.
Justification for carrying out the work
To carry out the definitive closure of the hulene garbage dump due to its accumulation that
allows the collapse of garbage to the houses.
And the main concern related to the search for solid waste throughout the hulene B
neighborhood is focused on the repercussions that this waste can have on human health,
and on the quality of the environment (soil, water, air and landscapes) produced. at all
stages of human activities, waste, both in terms of composition and volume.
Objective
General :
 Map in a participatory way the places of production and storage of urban solid waste.
Specifics :
 Choose an area where solid waste is produced in this area
 Envision alternative solutions for area location and MSW collection management
 Propose community management mechanisms and other possible services in the MSW
deposit area
 Collect documentation on criteria and rules for the location, transport, transfer,
treatment, and deposit of MSW.
 Identify probable causes of poor solid waste management;
 Point out efficient and sustainable models in solid waste management;
 Propose measures to improve solid waste management

Methodology
The methods used to produce the report are:
 Direct observation;
 Interview with people responsible for the dump;
 Based on satellite image;
The methods used for area of influence are:
Contextualization/Development
Urban solid waste:
From the research it was observed that men collect broken appliances, pieces of zinc, iron,
aluminum and copper sheets, women and children collect plastics, cardboard and food
scraps, among others. Young people and teenagers collect rubbish at the unloading site,
where the vans deposit the rubbish. According to Cuna (2004) the dump receives 300 to
400 people a day, and women are the ones who participate the most.
Solid waste management in the hulene dump
The municipality produces around 1000 tons of garbage daily, with an estimated production
of 0.5kg/inhabitant/day of household waste, with a composition of 60-70%, mostly organic
(Master Plan for Waste Management Urban Solids in the city of Maputo, 2007). According
to the same source, annually, the production of MSW in Maputo City results in a quantity
of around 383,980 tons. As the table illustrates, about 92% of solid waste is discarded.
Possible solutions
 Sensitize other people to consider environmental issues.
 Avoid buying products you don't need.
 Choose cloth diapers over disposables or use them interchangeably. Disposable diapers
can take 500 years to break down; cloth ones can be used for about six months.
 Buy recycled, biodegradable or refillable products (like shavers) whenever possible.
THE FINAL DEPOSITION
The landfill is an area designated to receive solid waste, such as urban solid waste (MSW),
civil construction debris, sludge from the treatment plant, among others. The sanitary
landfill specifically receives urban solid waste.

Hazardous Waste - waste that contains risk characteristics for being flammable, explosive,
corrosive, toxic, infectious or radioactive, or for presenting any other characteristic that
constitutes a danger to the life or health of man and other living beings and to the quality of
the environment. environment.

Non-hazardous waste – waste that does not contain hazardous characteristics

recommendations
 Issue and disseminate mandatory compliance rules on procedures to be observed in the
scope of hazardous waste management;
 Carry out the environmental licensing of the installations or places for the storage
and/or disposal of hazardous waste;
 Accreditation in coordination with the supervisory entities, after hearing the institutions
 interested parties, the hazardous waste transport operators and the vehicles used for
their transport;
 Register public or private entities that handle hazardous waste;
 Adopt, in coordination with the relevant sectors, the necessary measures to suspend the
storage, disposal or transport of hazardous waste, carried out illegally and/or under
conditions that constitute a danger to public health or the environment

Conclusion
At the end of the present work, it was concluded that the population of the hulene B
neighborhood needs monitoring and awareness because with the bad management of solid
waste, the administrator will have to put some means to stop the deposition of solid waste
in inappropriate places, unfortunate case of the garbage dump. hulene. today threatens the
life of the planet and man is largely responsible for this disturbance, he modifies the
environment according to his needs.
