SCRIPT

pg. 4
EXT. COMMON – DAY/AFTERNOON

EMILY is sitting, on her phone, leaning against a tree. The tree is

large, most likely an oak tree and is centered and tall.

ISLA and SOPHIE come up to her.

ISLA:

So, you haven’t got Rosie to speak for you any more Emily. What
are you going to do? Are you going to grow a backbone? Use that
weird voice of yours? Or maybe you have nothing to say!

Emily looks embarrassed and upset

ISLA:

What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?

EMILY:

Don’t…

ISLA:

Oh, she speaks! Did you hear everyone! Weird Emily

speaks!

SOPHIE:

Isla, that’s enough.

Emily runs out of common and home

Later that day:

EMILY’S MUM:

Why are you in the dark? It’s such a lovely day outside. I
thought you were going to try to take a walk today.

EMILY:

I did.

EMILY’S MUM:

Oh, I’m so pleased, that would have done you the world of good.

Emily shrugged

EMILY’S MUM:

Do you want to talk about anything?

Emily shakes her head

pg. 5
EMILY’S MUM:

I know you miss Rosie. You can still meet up – and once you
pass your driving test you can visit more often. And you’re
always on that phone of yours, messaging her.

EMILY

(quietly) I know.

Later that evening:

Messages between Emily and Rosie

ROSIE:

OMG Emily. Tell Isla where to get off.

EMILY:

I’m not likely to do that, am I?

ROSIE:

No, probably not

EMILY:

I wish you still lived here. I miss you.

ROSIE:

I didn’t have much choice remember. Typical Dad to get his

dream job the other side of the country!

EMILY:

There’s a new family next door.

ROSIE:

you could pop your head over the fence like I did!

EMILY:

I’m so glad you did.

Flashback:

EXT. THE GARDEN – DAY

pg. 6
A small ish garden with a square of grass and a little patio leading
onto the side of the house.

The girls are running around, cartwheeling and having fun.

EMILY:

Come on Ellie, let’s play!

The girls stop playing and look to the side.

There’s a noise

Another girls head pops up from over the fence.

ROSIE:

Hi!!

The girls look shocked

EMILY:

Umm, hello

Rosie clambers higher up the fence, trying to get over.

ROSIE:

Hey, you’re in my class, aren’t you?!

The girls stay quiet, at this point Ellie has gone back to playing
with her dolls.

pg. 7
You are, aren’t you! You joined earlier this

week!!

Emily nods hesitantly.

So, what’s your name? I was going to ask you

at break time but you just stayed in the classroom and I didn’t
want to miss out on playing the

floor is lava on the adventure trail! I always

win! Well, not always but its either me or Max-

but it’s normally me who wins!

EMILY:

Emily.

ROSIE:

Hi Emily! I’m Rosie

Emily smiles.

ROSIE:

Do you want to play tomorrow? I’ve got the

perfect place we can go!!

Emily nods her head.

Blackout

Emily in SPAR:

pg. 8
Emily choosing some snacks - crisps and orange juice

ISLA:

Look who it is! It’s miss chatterbox! Are you saying hello?

Emily: looks at floor

ISLA:

Oh, dear – how clumsy of you (dropping a yogurt on the floor so that
it splashes on the floor and over Emily’s feet. Clumsy as well as
weird. (and walks away).

SHOP ASSISTANT:

You ok Emily?

Emily shrugs

SHOP ASSISTANT:

Nasty piece of work that one – but you’ve got to speak up Emily.

Emily shrugs

Helps shop worker to clean the mess

INT: Emily’s mum and her friend Kate

EMILY’S MUM:

I’m so worried about her Kate

Kate nods:

EMILY’S MUM:

I know she was overly dependent on Rosie but at least she was
happy then.

KATE:

I think she got used to Rosie speaking for her.

EMILY’S MUM:

It’s been a year now and things aren’t getting better. She’s
doing her school work and she’s having driving lessons – but
she’s just in the dark most of the time.

pg. 9
KATE:

She’ll get there.

EMILY’S MUM.

I really hope so.

Back to Emily sitting in the dark with Freddie.

Emily’s mum opens the living room curtains as she comes in.

EMILY:

I like them closed.

EMILY’S MUM:

what’s going on Emily?

Emily: shrugs

EMILY’S MUM:

I’m worried about you.

EMILY:

shrugs again

EMILY’S MUM:

I’m always here if you want to talk to me. I love you Emily.

EMILY:

Love you too mum.

Emily’s mum leaves the room:

EMILY: Freddie, why can’t I do it? I’ve got words in my head and I
can’t get them out? You understand though. I know you do.

Flashback:

ROSIE:

You hungry?

Emily nods

pg. 10
ROSIE:

Here, my mum packed me some sandwiches to

eat, do you want one?

Emily nods again- smiling slightly.

Rosie hands the girl a cheese sandwich square and begins to sit up.

ROSIE:

So, have you always lived around here? It’s

just, I’ve never seen you around until you

joined my school.

Emily shakes her head, finishing chewing before she goes to open her
mouth

EMILY

(she says quietly)

We moved house.

ROSIE

Ohhh, that’s cool. Was your house near here?

EMILY

Not really

Emily takes another bite of her sandwich

ROSIE

You don’t talk much, do you?

pg. 11
Emily shakes her head, going for another bite.

ROSIE

Will you be my best friend?

Emily’s eyes light up

EMILY

Really?

ROSIE

Yes! I think you’re fun

EMILY

Oh! yes please

(she stands up)-

I’ve never had a best friend before.

Rosie and Emily smile at each other before going in for a hug.

Flashback: different clothes: having fun

Flashback:

On the common, Emily and Rosie are playing in the park.

ISLA

pg. 12
Hi Rosie, Do you want to come and play with us?

Emily looks over to Rosie who is nodding.

ROSIE

Come on Emily, it will be fun!

Rosie runs after Isla to meet the other girls who are playing. Emily
follows behind. She hadn’t been included in the invite.

ISLA

Want to see my cartwheel? I’m the best at it!

SOPHIE

Yeah go on!

Jade does a cartwheel and ends with a nice finish.

All the girls clap and cheer, as they take it in turns to do

cartwheels.

ISLA:

Come on Emily. Can’t you do one?

EMILY:

I can.

ISLA:

Oh, she speaks! Show us then or are you lying?

ROSIE:

Isla that’s mean! Don’t speak like that to my best friend or I’ll
make sure you won’t have any friends.

ISLA: mumbles

‘sorry’

pg. 13
ROSIE: In fact, Emily is absolutely amazing at gymnastics. Go on
Emily. Show them.

It’s Emily’s turn and she does a cartwheel followed by a back

walkover!

GIRL 2

Cool! I want to try!

ROSIE:

That was awesome Emily!

The girls all try the skill, some of them kicking over first time and
some after the second, third or even fourth.

Isla has a face like thunder.

Blackout

Back in Emily’s bedroom; Emily speaking/messaging Rosie whilst being

in flexible poses:

ROSIE:

She did what?

EMILY:

My shoes are ruined.

ROSIE:

You need me back to stand up for you.

EMILY.

I need to stand up for myself but I just can’t.

ROSIE:

You need to speak up Emily.

EMILY:

I know

pg. 14
Emily back in SPAR

Pays for her crisps and orange juice

SOPHIE:

Have you seen this Emily?

Beaconsfield Gymnastics’ club are looking for a new

helper coach. No qualifications needed – training
provided. Are you still as flexible as you were when we
used to do gymnastics on the Common. You were so
brilliant at it.

EMILY:

Thanks.

SOPHIE:

I mean it. I used to go home and pretend to be you!

EMILY:

smiling.

Gosh.

SOPHIE:

You should apply. It says over 16s. Your mum could take you and
when you pass your driving test you can drive yourself.

EMILY:

I could, couldn’t I. Thanks Sophie.

SOPHIE:

No worries.

EMILY:

takes a photo of the message on the Spar door.

In car:

EMILY’S MUM:

pg. 15
Good luck darling. I’ll pick you up in an hour. I’m so proud of
you.

EMILY:

It’s just a trial mum.

EMILY’S MUM:

You’ll be great. Are you nervous.

EMILY:

Terrified!

Emily coming back to the car:

EMILY:

I got it mum! Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. It was

so brilliant. There was a little girl called Lexie who was too
nervous to try the low beam. I think she was 4 or 5 but she
held my hand and did it! Samantha was really pleased because
she’s only been coming for a couple of weeks and this was the
first time she was willing to try something. And then there was
a little girl called Hope who asked to be my friend!

EMILY’S MUM:

laughing.

It doesn’t sound like work.

EMILY:

It didn’t feel like it. I love it!

EMILY’S MUM:

Things are looking up. She’s far brighter and laughs a lot
more these days.

KATE:

That’s amazing. I saw her in the shop yesterday – she was

buying her crisps and orange juice and I’d popped in for some
wine. Anyway, she chatted to me. I mean properly chatted.

EMILY’S MUM:

pg. 16
She’s beginning to speak up. She’s even talking about going to
university – taking a year out first and working more as a
gymnastic coach. I didn’t think we would be here this time last
year.

KATE:

And she saw Rosie last week?

EMILY’S MUM:

Yes, they love meeting up when they can. Emily’s talking

about visiting Rosie at university next year. I do think they
are friends for life.

EMILY:

Rosie!

ROSIE:

Hi Emily, I’ve got something for you!

She reaches into her bag and takes out a blue box.

Inside the box is a necklace, with half a heart as

The pendant.

EMILY:

Oh, it’s beautiful! I love it… Thank you so much Rosie!

ROSIE:

Whatever happens, we’ll always be best friends.

Emily nods.

Emily in her usual spot against the tree, scrolling on her phone. She
hears Isla’s voice:

ISLA:

pg. 17
Oh, here she is. Miss Weird with no voice.

EMILY:

ignores her, but looks more confident.

ISLA:

Got nothing to say Miss Weird?

EMILY:

You’re getting boring Isla. I actually have no interest in

your opinion of me.

Emily walks away and leaves Isla open mouthed and Sophie looking
pleased.

Emily walking Freddie and overhearing conversation between Isla and a

man.

MARK:

I’ll say whatever I want to say. I’ll treat you however I

want to treat you. You don’t own me.

ISLA:

I don’t want to do it Mark.

MARK

You haven’t got a choice.

ISLA:

What if we get caught?

MARK:

We didn’t last time, did we?

ISLA: silent

MARK:

Remember you owe me.

Isla goes to sit on a bench chair. Emily walks over the road with
Freddie and sits next to her.

EMILY:

pg. 18
I heard that.

ISLA:

So?

EMILY:

Whatever it is you’re planning, don’t do it Isla.

ISLA:

I’ve got no choice.

EMILY:

There’s always a choice. Come to my house. Let’s talk it

through.

ISLA:

Why are you helping?

EMILY: shrugs

ISLA:

I haven’t been very kind to you.

EMILY:

I needed to speak up. Now it’s your turn.

Messages with Rosie:

ROSIE:

Police! Never!

EMILY:

She got off with a caution – first offence.

ROSIE:

And you helped her? Do I know you anymore?

EMILY:

I can speak up now!

ROSIE:

Friends forever though!
